On game-winning run, Cromartie wanted no part of Tebow

Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow kneels before their NFL football game against New York Jets in Denver Reuters

Lost in the Tebowmania is that fact that Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie went back to the future at the goal line during the game-winning touchdown, conjuring images of his matador routine when facing the Jets as a member of the Chargers in the 2009 postseason.

Widely criticized for twice making no effort to make contact with Jets running back Shonn Greene during what turned out to be Cromartie’s final game in San Diego, Cromartie had a chance to separate from a block by Broncos receiver Eric Decker and try to tackle Tim Tebow short of the goal line.

But Cromartie wanted no part of Tebow.

It’s hard to blame him.  A stationary Cromartie likely wouldn’t have been able to keep Tebow, who was running with a full head of steam, out of the end zone.

But watch the play.  It looks like Cromartie made no effort at all to separate from Decker and make contact with Tebow.  In fact, the cablecam angle seems to suggest that Cromartie was holding onto Decker’s arms until Tebow was in the end zone.

It’s not nearly as glaring as Cromartie’s effort (or lack thereof) against the Jets two years ago.  But it sure looks like Cromartie shied away from getting blasted by a 245-pound Bronco bull.

Well, knowing Cromartie, and knowing Tebow, its highly likely had Cromartie touched him, he’d exclaim “It burns!!”

    You mean a 245lb. Tebull!!!

  4. mulxedge says: Nov 18, 2011 12:38 AM

hold on – Darrelle Revis stepped out of Tebow’s way earlier on in the drive when Tebow ran straight at him

i know it wasn’t the game winning touchdown but the Jets just didn’t seem interested tonight

  9. nflhof says: Nov 18, 2011 12:41 AM

Is anyone surprised by this? Cromartie is a joke.

  10. wellthatsaloadofcrap says: Nov 18, 2011 12:43 AM

It looked like he was separated from Decker, and actually ran over to him and held on after Tebow had broken the line of scrimmage.

    Business decision.

Yes Mike, that was really bad. I wonder if he will make it out of the film room before getting cut.
I also blame Rex for this game, he gets too high and too low and this starts to rob off the players. I blame him for Sanchez confidence wane. One bad Time out does not mean you should insult the guy on national TV. Sanchez has not recovered since that play and he is taking the Jets down with him.

Suffered injuries and some slumps and your still .500 chill out. Rex tunrned you around… He can’t if he talks which he does.. he team needs to back him. You guys are fine. Play ball control when you get LT and Greene back and solid D. Let Sanchez pass here and there. Your built for it… Get Sanchez some R.I.C.E. time ( Rest, Ice, Compression and, Elavation ) Cuz Doom and Gloom tore his sh*t up tonight. Sorry had too Donkey fan here.

All this talk about how the league is making the game soft goes out the door when mr. shutdown corner ole’s a QB, and mr I can’t remember all of my kids names holds on for dear life until all is safe from getting run over. So RaiderAlex, your point is what? That a couple of late hits and contact on a LAST-SECOND HAIL MARY!! means that the Jets deserved to win. That’s really pathetic. I know you are still in shock from that beat-down Tebow laid on the Raiders recently but that’s no excuse for being stupid.

  42. mgifford7 says: Nov 18, 2011 3:06 AM

the bottom line is, that if the jets played in any other NFL city than NY, they wouldnt get even half the hype they do now. last I checked, they havent won anything that matters in the last 10 years. sanchez is more overrated than romo (joe namath thinks sanchez gets too much hype), and rex ryan is just a fat, loud mouthed, glorified defensive coordinator. Tebow exposed their (mostly) old defense and sealed a win, and I’m glad to see it as a bronco fan.

  43. earthtopft says: Nov 18, 2011 3:30 AM

Wile E. Cromartie. Didn’t want to end up being a hood ornament for the entertainment of the audience. If you look closely you can see that “wide eyed for perpetuity look” Wile E. got just before the train hit him.

  44. stevedigre says: Nov 18, 2011 3:41 AM

Rex Ryan has ruined Sanchez and his confidence. Rex Ryan has created his mess. This will be interesting.

  45. pacificamjr says: Nov 18, 2011 3:56 AM

give Cromartie a break, he wanted to stay fresh for some post game rocky mountain baby making! he’s only got 3 ba$tard kids in the mtn time zone, so he figured it was time to find another baby momma!

  46. Chairman Al says: Nov 18, 2011 4:51 AM

    Here’s where I don’t get it:

Tebow was the starting quarterback and won. Got that. But he’s being constantly bailed out by his defense. The only touchdown they scored in the first 59 minutes of the game was defensive.

And before all of the “yeah but he got it when it counts”, got that too.

Denver’s D is being asked to perform a significantly challenging task. So far, they’re up for it. But look at the amount of points Denver scores per game. Remember when they lost 45-10 to Detroit? News flash: this was only 7 points more, and 7 came from the defense.

Broncos are winning, and amazingly, are very alive and dangerous in the AFC West. But its not fair to give all of this credit to Tebow when the defense is really doing all of the work.

  47. anhdazman says: Nov 18, 2011 4:53 AM

This shouldn’t be a surprise. Back when Cromartie was a Charger, a play-off game vs. the Jets, Cromartie did a very similar “ole” to Shonn Greene’s long TD run. Since Cromartie is so good at “pulling out of tackles” in the NFL, if he just tried, applying the “pulling out of” method during intamicy, he wouldn’t have 9 kids with 8 different women.

  48. uwachampion says: Nov 18, 2011 6:36 AM

LOL “Who could blame him”. What A joke! Make the play you lazy bum. The Jets suck and are a solid product of their blowhard loudmouth coach. I also think its funny that Vick did this garbage for years but now when Lil Timmy runs its the second coming. He is a glorified fullback.

  49. stlsteelerfan says: Nov 18, 2011 6:57 AM

“Splat, splat, splat.” What’s that sound? The sound of people jumpimg off the Jets bandwagon.

“Future splat, future splat, future splat.” What that sound? The people jumping off Tebow’s bandwagon when the Broncos play a defense that can actually defend the run.

  53. qdog112 says: Nov 18, 2011 7:08 AM

Smith, #33 for the Jets is FIRED. It was his poor pursuit angle that gave up the winning TD – plain and simple. There is noway to blame Cromartie, who was in man to man coverage – yet no mention of Smith’s obvious error. Smith’s job was CONTAIN!

  54. lostsok says: Nov 18, 2011 7:30 AM

As long as Cromartie was hugging Decker there in the end zone…I’m think Dek might want to invest in the morning-after pill.

Tebow definately has a flair for the dramatic and plays his best at the end of games. But lost in all this is the fact that overall a Tebow-led offense has been pretty darn terrible and is being held up by some terrific defensive plays.

They punted 8 times in a row and were down only 13-10. Seriously. Their defense is winning these games, not Tebow.

Then again maybe Tebow makes the D better.

Super Bowl ready D?? I admit they’re good, and probably better than good, but they’ve given up 30+ 4 times this year. So what if they held the Jags to 3 points…Also, while Sanchez is inconsistent at best, I think you need to give at least some props to the Broncos D for shutting the Jets down. It’s not as if Sanchez was sitting back there all day making bad throws with no pressure!

    **************************

    Ding ding ding…

Ball control, low risk, and yes the D is playing better. Denver had a few drives fail as well since Fox for some reason always takes points off the board and Willis’s fumble. Guy’s who never make plays are making plays. That was Goodmans first pick six ever. He’s like 32. You can give Tim a real fair judgement next yr after a off season people.

Another thing seeing all these Jets fans complaints. You got a dose of your own medicine tonight. Got beat up and you didn’t like it.. Von Miller ksiked your trash! Sucks being in your shoes.. Why? Because the last few yrs more like 5-6 have been that way for Denver. So I’m a hypocrite in a way. But for real bad game with a dramatice ending. Football’s fun!
