A lot of time has passed since June, but Osi Umenyiora’s not ready to move past something that happened that month just yet.
You might remember that the Giants defensive end engaged in a war of words with Eagles running back LeSean McCoy back in the days when the league was locked out and Umenyiora was filing affidavits about how the Giants lied to him about a new contract. McCoy tweeted that Umenyiora was soft, overrated and the third best defensive lineman on the Giants. Umenyiora fired back by referring to McCoy as “she” and “Lady Gaga.”
Honestly, we had forgotten all about the little spat, but Umenyiora’s elephantine memory is better than ours. Umenyiora missed the first Eagles game after he decided to have knee surgery during training camp so he’s had plenty of time to think about just how much he dislikes McCoy. Hint: Quite a bit.
“He ran his mouth, he crossed the line that shouldn’t have been crossed. And I think he knows that as a professional. I’ll see him on the football field and we’ll go from there.”
“What he did was unforgivable,” Umenyiora said Friday, via Jeff Roberts of the Bergen Record. “Because whenever you see a man in a contract dispute—a fellow NFL player—you don’t take that opportunity to take your shots at him. You wait until you’re about to play him, then you take your shots. We’ve had our problems. I’ve moved past it.”
So now we know the rules and regulations when it comes to calling players soft and overrated. It’s okay when they are happy about their contract during game week. Since McCoy violated that rule, there’s a little extra juice to this weekend’s Giants-Eagles game.
