Rex Ryan: Jets’ playoffs start now

New York Jets v Baltimore Ravens Getty Images

After the Jets’ loss to the Patriots on Sunday, Rex Ryan declared that his team wouldn’t win the division. After the Jets’ loss to the Broncos on Thursday, Ryan said that if they want to earn a wild-card berth, they can’t afford to lose another game.

Our playoffs start next week,” Ryan said. “We’ve got to find a way to beat Buffalo.”

Ryan is right: For the Jets, the game against the Bills next Sunday is essentially a playoff game, because if they lose it they’re simply not going to make the postseason. The Jets are 5-5, meaning they’re in 10th place in the AFC — eight teams in the conference have a better record, and now they’d lose a tiebreaker with Denver, the one team that has the same record.

It’s not unreasonable to think the Jets could run the table and go 11-5, with games remaining against the Bills, Redskins, Chiefs, Eagles, Giants and Dolphins. And that might be what they need to do to get to the postseason.

Which means it has to start next Sunday against Buffalo.

Atta boy, Rexy. Take down Buffalo and essentially hand the division to the Patriots.

There is no way they run the table with Sanchez. Peyton Manning next year.

Playoffs??? Playoffs?…You got to be kidding me. jets no closer to a playoff team than the Chiefs, who have better players.

Only playoff games they win..are in April. jets , in total playoff victories, ,,are way way behind NE, Buffalo, and Miami…Hell, they only have 2 division titles in 40+ years…pitiful.

Happy 43rd anniversary jet fans….couldn’t happen to a bigger bunch of A holes.

The playoff run will commence after the run to the buffet tables.

The solution is so obvious, but no one ever suggests it.

Trade for Chad Pennington’s head, and bolt it onto Mark Sanchez every Sunday.

    Keep the faith Sexy Rexy:

“I believe this is the year we’re going to win the Super Bowl,” Ryan said during a press conference at the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine, being held this week at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis.

“I thought we’d win it the first two years. I guarantee we’ll win it this year.”

  9. lockoftheweak says: Nov 18, 2011 7:30 AM

Last year the Jets record was inflated by 3-4 (5?) wins due to other teams beating themselves. This year the Jets do not have that luck. Rex is still hungry though….

The Jets can certainly talk a good game…

    They just can’t play one.

    Hey MEvis,
You were right. I think you did fall asleep out there. Maybe his crossed eyes prevented him from seeing a 245 lb QB running straight for him.

Can’t wait for the next players survey, to see if they all still want to play for Ryan, and the last coach they want is Coughlin.

Actually, they have the same luck this year. See the wins against the Cowboys and Chargers. They are 5-5, but should be 3-7 based on their actual play.

Today the Jets asked the league the re-do the schedule and pair them against the Packers for the last game of the season.

They are hoping that the Packers will sit Rogers, and all their starters so the Jets can back into the playoffs again.

  18. JakeDSnake says: Nov 18, 2011 7:49 AM

Yeah the Jets will sweep – especially the Dolphins (wait, they have a 2-3 record against Miami in Rex’s time?!!) and I am sure the Giants will roll over for them as well, especially if the Jets have home field.

  25. wenellniners says: Nov 18, 2011 8:04 AM

they got beaten by a high school quarterback last night and when it counted, they couldn’t stop that final drive. if i’m the jets, i don’t know if i’m more motivated or embarrassed by what happened last night. revis and the defense talked smack about how denver’s offense can’t last in the nfl.

the other issue is that their qb isn’t making enough plays consistently to help his team.

now way they make the playoffs..

  26. tatatoothy says: Nov 18, 2011 8:05 AM

I can’t stand the Jets, but none of this crap you just spewed has any relevancy to their current team. The Jets have been to two consecutive AFC Championship games; NE, Buffalo and Miami all combine for zero playoff wins over that same span.

    And the Chiefs are terrible.

Ain’t making the playoffs with Sanchez’ play this year. Jets billionaire owner Johnson should try to buy and trade players or picks for Peyton Manning next year.

  32. southpaw2k says: Nov 18, 2011 8:31 AM

I think we should start a pool on when Rex Ryan will make his next prediction that the Jets will win Super Bowl 47. I say he’ll open his mouth the day after the regular season ends.

  33. mjs2012 says: Nov 18, 2011 8:32 AM

Reports say that Rex was found “Tebowing” after the game, but it was later clarified that he just wanted a better view of everyone’s feet.

  34. east96st says: Nov 18, 2011 8:34 AM

I don’t understand. I would swear this website went on and on about how the Jets were the “toast of NY” and Sanchez was better than Eli. We all said it never happened and never will, but you guys were quite adamant. Guess that goes into the “Washington Redskins will win the Super Bowl” and “Terry Bradshaw is dead” category, right?

  36. Derty Ernie says: Nov 18, 2011 8:36 AM

Rex, you and your staff must be the ‘stupidist’ coaches in football.
The opposing team has to go 95 yards to score with 4 minutes left and the QB couldn’t throw a pass to save his life and you have your playing a prevent defense, defending the long pass?
I mean after Tebow runs for two first downs, what is it that your not getting? Dah. He’s keeping the ball and running stupid. Get rid of the 4 man front and play the run stupid.
You guys will not, with the way you played last night, make the playoffs. and buy the way teams know Sanchez can’t pass the out pass or throw long effectively so they have your number on that too.
You will not win with Sanchez. His arm is rubber. He can’t run the ball or scramble and your offensive line is offensive lately.

It amazes me how many comments can be mustered up on any nyj article about mark gq spread, rex’s feet video or being overweight, or plax shooting himself 3 years ago. you people are an embarrassment to the sport you gossip and don’t support any statements you make with factual evidence you know nothing about football that you couldn’t read on any sports blog. the whole pft community is bitter bandwagoners. That being said I like this sportswriter, not one snide or sarcastic remark at all. keep it up

  38. pleasantsurpriselefty says: Nov 18, 2011 8:36 AM

As one who disparages all things NY I hope Fatso keeps talking. It’s one thing to not being able to back up your empty boasts but it is delusional to keep making them after you have crapped the bed!!

When Rex finds himself in a hole he justs keeps digging. God bless him.

  39. johnnyshore says: Nov 18, 2011 8:42 AM

“It’s not unreasonable to think the Jets could run the table and go 11-5, with games remaining against the Bills, Redskins, Chiefs, Eagles, Giants and Dolphins.”

It’s not unreasonable to think that? I think it’s extremely unreasonable to think the Jets will beat all six of those teams. Put simply, the Jets are not a good team. There’s absolutely no way they beat the Giants. The Bills will probably beat them, the Eagles and Chiefs will also be tough games for them. Even the Dolphins have a shot at beating them. The only guaranteed win in that list is the Redskins. The Jets will not make the playoffs, and I love it.

  40. dukemarc says: Nov 18, 2011 8:42 AM

No Rex, the Jets Playoff hopes ended last night.

  41. weepingjebus says: Nov 18, 2011 8:44 AM

I’m a happily married man with kids and a good job, and that 10 second shot of Rex Ryan walking up and down the sideline shaking his head in a daze after Tebow’s gorgeous TD run was the happiest moment of my life.

  42. dukemarc says: Nov 18, 2011 8:49 AM

I can’t wait for Rex’s first presser conference after he gets fired. I’m not saying it will be this year but when it goes down, I bet it will sound like a test pattern for about 10 minutes straight.

  43. tedmurph says: Nov 18, 2011 8:55 AM

By 2013 Rex will be a def coordinator and Sanchez will be a backup QB somewhere. Right where they both belong.

  44. wwwmattcom says: Nov 18, 2011 8:55 AM

Sure let’s say they make the playoffs with the easy regular season schedule ahead. One problem, you play playoff caliber teams in the playoffs. The only thing going for the Jets is being in the AFC.

  45. kev86 says: Nov 18, 2011 8:55 AM

Does that Mangold to Sanchez snap make the blooper real or not enough there? Close one.

Tebow running through Revis on the 95 yd game winning drive was something to see.

    Same Old Jets

  46. snarkzilla says: Nov 18, 2011 9:02 AM

    > the whole pft community is bitter bandwagoners.

Sanchez sucks. Cromartie and Revis both declined to tackle Tebow. Ryan is a blowhard and Jets fans who keep swooning to his hot air and then are shocked that it doesn’t come true deserve all the misery they get.
