Rob Gronkowski fined for Sunday night spike

New England Patriots v New York Jets Getty Images

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski got pretty excited after catching his second touchdown of the game on Sunday night and it’s going to cost him some cash.

Gronkowski was fined $7,500 for spiking the ball at Jets cornerback Donald Strickland while Strickland was sprawled out on the field after the touchdown. Gronkowski drew a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct on the play, giving the Jets a short field they used to briefly draw back within a touchdown before New England put the game away.

Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald got Gronkowski’s response to the fine. The tight end said that he’ll spike the ball even harder next time.

“The tight end said that he’ll spike the ball even harder next time.”

How many quotes like these do we need before the NFL realizes FINES ARE NOT WORKING! It might deter some fringe players, but most players make enough money they don’t really care.

  3. pattunya says: Nov 18, 2011 4:19 PM

I think Gronk is a beast. But that just shows his immaturity. No reason to do that at all. I’m a Patriots fan and I thought that was a classless, punk move.

  4. homelanddefense says: Nov 18, 2011 4:19 PM

I really dont think he spiked the ball AT Strickland. he certainly did it too close, so the penalty has understandable. But I dont think he intentionally did it at Strickland as suggested.

  5. Stiller43 says: Nov 18, 2011 4:20 PM

It seems that some in the nfl front office have bets over what idiotic thing they can fine somebody for next and they just keep upping the anty.

“you fined someone for wearing orange cleats that match their orange uniform?!! Well im gonna fine gronkowski for spiking a ball when he scored!!! Beat THAT!!”

  6. n0hopeleft says: Nov 18, 2011 4:21 PM

Next time, please run over to the Jets sideline and spike that fat Blabosaurus Rex right in his (failed lap band surgically repaired) stomach of his!

  7. flavordave says: Nov 18, 2011 4:25 PM

Isnt the definiton of sportmanlike “to be a gemtleman”? If your gentleman on an NFL field youre going to have your spine seperated.

  8. havok82 says: Nov 18, 2011 4:26 PM

That’s just silly. How does that warrant a fine while Mr. Suh yanked off Cutler’s helmet in an attempt to pop his head like a dandelion with no punishment?

The NFL and their fines are as consistent as the morons officiating the games.

  9. theandy59 says: Nov 18, 2011 4:26 PM

He didn’t spike the ball “at” Strickland, he wasn’t even looking at him. He waved the ball in front of his teammate and then spiked it. Strickland was still on the ground well after the play ended. This was not unsportsmanlike conduct or taunting, just a guy who didn’t realize that the Jet player was still lounging around on the ground. I don’t care about the fine, but I hate seeing a 15 yard penalty for stupid bs like this.

  10. boblavoie says: Nov 18, 2011 4:29 PM

Spike the ball Rob! I hope you get to spike lots of them!
These fines are getting more than stupid.

  11. wheresmyjuice says: Nov 18, 2011 4:32 PM

I’m no Pats fan but this is the worst fine I have ever seen in the NFL. I watched this particular celebration and their analysis is completely off base. It went like this:

1- Gronk shows Branch the ball (see pic above)
2- Branch points to a spot in the end zone directly between him and Gronk.
3- Gronk spikes ball in said spot.

Strickland tried to make the play so he was close but he was off to the side. This thing had no malice intent and he wasn’t looking at Strickland at all.

What would Icky Woods be saying about all of this?

  12. trbowman says: Nov 18, 2011 4:35 PM

On a similar note, the sooner the NFL starts talking about suspensions for illegal hits, the better.

Couldn’t be mover obvious that fines aren’t a working deterrent.

Too many repeat offenders. Lay down the law already!

  17. romoscollarbone says: Nov 18, 2011 4:47 PM

haha love it. If you get smoked for a TD, don’t cry that the spike bounced up and hit you. Stop the play. Gronk is the best TE in football just about. Hard for me to say when i watch Witten get open, any place, any time.

Well, that IS taunting. And it’s against the rules.

And if you think that’s the worst fine you’ve ever seen, you haven’t seen many fines. Wait until Brian Dawkins gets fined for spearing last night, even though he absolutely didn’t.

That’s more likely to make the list than this.

  28. jimboonie says: Nov 18, 2011 5:16 PM

Love the fact that Gronkowski caught that ball and Strickland ends up sitting on his arse on the grass getting the ball spiked in his face!

Any other team, and I’d support the fine. Being the Yets, I think he deserves a bonus!

  41. icewalker946 says: Nov 18, 2011 6:34 PM

I’m going to be ‘that old guy’ by saying this but I don’t mind this kind of display. What I can’t stand is the struttin’ BEFORE the ball carrier gets into the end zone and that includes my team as well.

Get in the frickin’ endzone and then you can act a fool. Jump into the stands and get $8 beer spilled on you, moon walk across the Dallas star, or even Tebow after the touchdown….but get into the endzone first.

(Why do I feel like Walter from Jeff Dunham now?)

  42. pongonfl says: Nov 18, 2011 6:41 PM

    ===================

He’d probably say; You ran the route correctly. On the next series were going to run the 2 minute offense.

“Mubles” doesnt care, as long as effectively know the system. The result of the play extended the lead, and any lead is safe with the Jets as long as Sanchez is in and you dont turn the ball over.

Never said that you were a Pats fan.

And stupid penalty/stupid fine or not, karma was at play here. The Pats have had many similar penalties go their way, so payback is inevitable. My comments were to the whining about by a fan base that gets more than their fair share of calls that go their way.

And who’s to say that Gronkowski wasn’t taunting…after all, “everyone does it”, don’t they?

Remember when T.O. stood in the middle of the Dallas star after a TD? Remember when Emitt Smith scored on the following drive and spiked in the middle of the star and kneeled?

Remember when Joe Horn pulled out the cell phone hidden in the goalpost?

Remember when your team was allowed to celebrate and how it made you feel when an opponent scored and celebrated in your endzone only to have your team come right back and throw a taunt right back and how that made you feel?

Worst thing that the NFL ever did was take away celebrations. That is when the NFL really started to decline into the excuse of football league it is now. The competition in football is almost all but gone now .
