Stafford fined $7,500; Moore fined $15,000

Atlanta Falcons v Detroit Lions Getty Images

A confrontation between Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and Bears defensive back D.J. Moore that set off a brawl on Sunday has resulted in fines for both men.

Stafford was fined $7,500 for throwing Moore to the ground while Moore was blocking him following an interception. That led to Moore retaliating after the play by running head-first into Stafford, and Moore has been fined $15,000 for that.

Lions guard Rob Sims was fined $7,500 for joining the fight that broke out after the Moore-Stafford confrontation.

The $7,500 fine is chump change for Stafford, who got $41.7 million guaranteed as the first overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft. That may be why Stafford said Wednesday that he doesn’t “really care either way, to tell you the truth” about the NFL fining him.

Other fines from the Lions-Bears game include $7,500 for Kyle Vanden Bosch for a late hit, and $10,000 for Earl Bennett for wearing orange shoes for the second straight week. Yes, in the NFL wearing the wrong color shoes can get you fined more than hitting an opponent after the whistle or starting a fight.

It’s an overdone sports cliche to say a team reflects its leadership, but I think it applies in the case of Stafford and the rest of the cheap-shot artists on his team. Look at the way Jim Schwartz carries (and embarrasses) himself, and you start to understand why such behavior is acceptable in Detroit.

  2. thatboi901 says: Nov 18, 2011 1:54 PM

Defensive players get screwed again. If Moore would of dragged Stafford by his helmet he would of probably been kicked out the game and suspended without pay.

  3. Southpaw says: Nov 18, 2011 1:57 PM

That’s BS – if a defensive player tackled a QB, or anyone for that matter, by ripping him down by the facemask with two hands like that, the fine would’ve been bigger than both of those combined

  4. snarkzilla says: Nov 18, 2011 1:59 PM

… and the new face of the NFL gets a pass for ripping Cutler’s helmet off.

  5. thebigkahuna23 says: Nov 18, 2011 2:01 PM

As always, these fines are retarded. Start making them relative to a player’s salary. Even at the league minimum 10,000 dollars is like 1/70th of what these guys make. At least it all goes to charity I guess.

  6. gridassassin says: Nov 18, 2011 2:01 PM

Moore retaliated after the whistle – he should have been fined more – and I’m a Bears fan.

It’s ridiculous that a ‘uniform’ expense is more than incidents where people could have been injured.

Whatever – the NFL – Nonsense Fine League

Moore was kicked out of the game.

NFL Charities have it made! I think it’s a conflict of interest though. How can this not breed corruption.

  9. tformation says: Nov 18, 2011 2:03 PM

Nothing for Fairley’s late hit on Cutler?

And Earl Bennett’s fine being higher than Stafford’s is complete BS.

  10. zoellner25 says: Nov 18, 2011 2:03 PM

the NFL’s dress code is just asinine. Guys should be able to wear whatever they want as long as team colors are somehow represented. And the fact that this fine is more than ripping a guy to the ground by his helmet is a joke. Come on NFL!!!!

  11. ncjjdix says: Nov 18, 2011 2:03 PM

Goes to show you that the Peppers hit on Johnson to force fumble and the Briggs hit on Johnson WERE NOT illegal. Just good Football plays. Detroit was done after there loss to the 49ers….. They are who we though they were….. Still Detroit.

Definetly gonna start Cam Newton this week…. Big week coming up…. 3 TD Passes and 2 running..Write it down.

    Stafford is my hero.

  13. ajlafrance says: Nov 18, 2011 2:08 PM

Oh. So Moore’s behavior is acceptable. Hater’s gotta hate. And, by the way, I’d rather have a quarterback too amped up and competitive then one who takes himself out of a playoff game because he got an ow-ey. Now THAT’S embarrassing.

Nobody said squat when Peppers took Stafford out for the season last year on a vicious hit, but when Fairley makes the exact same tackle its a cheap shot.

Jim Schwartz could care less what you think, as well as most TRUE Lions fans.

  14. fitzmagic1212 says: Nov 18, 2011 2:09 PM

the NFL is a joke with the fines they give out. i hope he wears those orange shoes every game the rest of his career. roger goodell you are an embarrasement

  15. steelersmichele says: Nov 18, 2011 2:17 PM

I know it’s wrong to “fight” but if Stafford was my QB, I’d be so proud of him right now.

  16. 92and94and51and56 says: Nov 18, 2011 2:21 PM

Amazing how the NFL’s over-protection of quarterbacks now extends to their wallets.

  17. gordyb7 says: Nov 18, 2011 2:22 PM

The lions went from being pitied to liked to disliked pretty fast. As a Lions fan, I kind of like the ‘dislike’. It’s more interesting when you have an ‘us-against-the-world’ and the media keeps parroting the ‘dirty team’ mantra. The Detroit Bad Boys of the new decade. Now give me some thumbs-downs, non Lions fans!

  18. funktron2x says: Nov 18, 2011 2:25 PM

Um, hello people. Bennett’s fin was $10K because he already got fined for wearing the orange socks. Stafford hadn’t ever been fined for anyhting, along with KVB to my knowledge. Apples and oranges.

  19. adirtyplayernamedsue says: Nov 18, 2011 2:27 PM

  21. formyministy says: Nov 18, 2011 2:29 PM

never mind that stafford never grabbed his facemask…let’s not have the truth getting in the way of a template. also find it funny that people are complaining about suh not getting fined, but then pointing out that briggs and peppers hits were legal because they didn’t get fined. huh.

  22. rmc1995 says: Nov 18, 2011 2:35 PM

Stafford didn’t grab a face mask. He shed a blocker by throwing him to the ground. Away from the line of scrimmage the rest of the helmet can be used to shed a blocker. He was fined a minimum to prevent the fans who think football is a gentleman’s sport from crying dirty.

  23. RaiderMight says: Nov 18, 2011 2:36 PM

Why does Moore get fined $15,000 for a late hit while Kyle Vanden Bosch is only fined $7500 for a late hit?

  24. kriswd40 says: Nov 18, 2011 2:36 PM

With everything that happened in this game, I’m really surprised that’s it for the number of players fined.

  25. cowboynation919 says: Nov 18, 2011 2:38 PM

These fines are a joke. That’s like a Friday night for these players. You want to teach a leason hit them where it hurts with suspensions.

Start it with Suh. I’m am so sick of this guy grabing people by the helmet and hitting people in the head. Last lines game I saw Stafford and Suh grab people by helmets. Only difference is Suh ripped the guys helmet right off.

Start with 1 game suspensions and go higher with more dirty plays. These fines are pointless for the rich.

  26. keeponhating says: Nov 18, 2011 2:40 PM

This is the same Nfl that calls 30+ yard PI penalties every weekend but the latest dirtiest hits result in 15 yard penalties. I don’t think logic is in their vocabulary.

  27. lionsfanatic84 says: Nov 18, 2011 2:43 PM

OK folks, how are you going to say defensive players always get screwed, then in the same post complain about Suh not getting fined? You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Don’t forget peppers never got fined either for his clothesline. We shall forever refer to this game as a good day for charities

  28. jimmysee says: Nov 18, 2011 2:44 PM

Earl Bennett is a repeat offender.

One more and he goes into the witness protection program.

He’ll be playing under an assumed identity for the Colts.

  29. lionsfanatic84 says: Nov 18, 2011 2:49 PM

The NFL loves fining Suh, I’m sure of Suh would have actually intentionally ripped cutler’s helemt off like all bears fans and people who didn’t watch the game are saying, he woulda been fined

  30. glunsty says: Nov 18, 2011 2:59 PM

    So ncjjdix,
Your QB was 50% for 119yds. So in other words he is crap since Newton is a lock for 5 tds against the same Lions D in their home field this time.
    Sounds about right.

  32. ncjjdix says: Nov 18, 2011 3:13 PM

didn’t need to pass against the lions….. Just ran and took the ball away!!!!

Oh yeah…watch the Peppers hit again..Not a clothesline..get your facts straight..It was right around the chest and he never got up complaining did he???

Gluntsy…The Lions are overhyped…Beat someone that has a over .500 record and we will talk…

  33. dlions4life says: Nov 18, 2011 3:31 PM

the bears have over a .500 record, and we beat them. split the division games, keep winning.

  34. redsoxaa says: Nov 18, 2011 3:39 PM

The only reason that Bennett’s fine is more that Stafford’s is because he is an idiot. They already told him that if he wears them again the fine would be $10k and he did it anyways.

  35. dawgsafety13 says: Nov 18, 2011 3:40 PM

I have never seen a fan base as whiney as the Bears. For a supposed hard-nose city you people sure are sensitive.

You have a DB who FIRST grabbed Staffords helmet, Stafford retaliated and tossed him on the ground. I’d be more embarrassed that I got rag-dolled by a QB whose monker is “glassford” than anything.

I used to view comments on this site as a barometer for how the nation viewed particular topics and teams. As time goes on, i’m realizing that it is just the same idiots over and over again lacing every post with their pathetic diatribes.

  36. louisvillebear says: Nov 18, 2011 3:53 PM

“Nobody said squat when Peppers took Stafford out for the season last year on a vicious hit, but when Fairley makes the exact same tackle its a cheap shot.”

One HUGE difference. Peppers hit was during the sack. Fairly ran a half-marathon after the ball was thrown. It wasn’t the type of hit – it is when it occurs.

  37. rmc1995 says: Nov 18, 2011 4:00 PM

Beat someone with a record over. 500? The lions beat the bears and the cowboys. Had the lions not beaten the chiefs, broncos and bucks they would all be over. 500.

You all are pathetic and are not real football fans. Ill take my Lions over any other boohoo team in the nfl. Stafford, Fairly, Vonder Bosch, Williams, SUE, Megatron, are a force. Hate all you want. Just like the fines, no one in Detroit gives a sh*t what you gum flapping losers think. Bring your hate, complaints, and backtalk and we will do what we do best. I love all of the BS the Lions band-wagoners are tossing around in this thread.

“Julius Peppers clotheslined Johnson.” Uh, no, he didn’t. He reached over Johnson’s shoulder and down his chest after Johnson tried to juke him. Peppers hand hit the ball and knocked it out. Unless Johnson was carrying the ball by wedging it between his chin and chest, Peppers could have touched the ball if he clotheslined him.

“Stafford was retaliating for DJ Moore grabbing his helmet first.” Watch the tape. Moore puts his hands up towards Stafford’s face mask after he started being dragged down by the helmet.

“Moore got ragdolled by a QB…” Moore is 5’9″ Satfford is 6’3″ and outweighs more by about 50 lbs. (maybe more – pictures I saw in August made hime look like he had been a strict regimen of double cheeseburgers and slurpees all offseason). Not only Stafford have to resort to b*tch move to shed a block from a little guy, but ducked like a little girl when Moore came at him than ran away with his tail between his legs.

Considering Forte did absolutely nothing and Cutler only completed 9 passes all day, go ahead. The score came from turnovers and nothing else; the Lions D actually played well all things considered.

  47. thefnlimit says: Nov 18, 2011 5:08 PM

Stafford was over the top. He got petty. Moore should have been the bigger man and stepped away afterwards but Stafford deserved much worse. He’s a punk that just got caught up. Watch the replay, seriously, he deserved it. It should not have happened, but he deserved it.

  55. tufflynx says: Nov 19, 2011 11:33 PM

    ncjjdix,

You are just flat wrong. The Peppers tackle that caused the Calvin Johnson fumble was clearly a clothesline. You don’t get whiplash from a tackle around the chest.. The video replay shows clearly, and without any doubt, that Peppers wrapped his arm around the neck of Johnson. Just because a player fumbles does not mean that the ball got knocked out by a strip. Sometimes a player drops a ball when they are getting their neck wrung too.
