Even with Peyton Manning I think the colts would have a hard time making the playoffs. They have slowly been getting worse year after year kinda like the patriots.

Funny, but after Tom Brady went down in the first game of 2008, I don’t remember people talking about the Patriots going 0-16.

I believe they, um, actually had a winning record.

Napolian doesn’t care if it’s 0-16, 1-15 or 2-14……as long as he gets the #1 pick and can get Andrew Luck to set up his son as GM for the next generation with the best QB in the league. This year is a throw away year for the Colts and everybody knows it. I’m sure the players want to win simply from a sense of pride and competitive spirit. But management….NO WAY. They want Andrew Luck and they want the team to continue losing this year. Of course you’ll never get them to admit it.

The entire Colts organization blows, from Irsay to the Game Day Consultant. If Irsay doesn’t hire a skilled GM and fire everyone the day after this season ends I’d put the odds on them skipping town within the next few years at over 50%.

mp – your 7:41. I disagree.
The Patriots have won more games in the last decade than anyone and they are still in the mix for the whole shebang. Granted Belichick has made some big mistakes but with the team’s current record and the draft picks they seem to stock up every year they are doing just fine.

Granted it doesn’t hurt to have # 12 out there, but keep in mind that B&B have won more games than any other coach & qb combo and much quicker.

Pick # 199 in the 6th round.

Once Colts went 0-4…they decided it was worth it to tank the rest of season. They put every guy with a little injury on IR.

Can’t blame them though.With new rookie salary cap structure. #1 is absolutely worth tanking for.

@kelvinmchale. Based on ur name, I’m guessing the Spurs getting the lottery that year wasn’t right because the team with the best odds to get the lottery that year and get Duncan was the Celtics???

I actually prefer the lottery system vs granting the picks based on record. It doesn’t automatically reward a team if they tank on purpose.

True, that it is more difficult to stay on top when you’re drafting late every year. However, teams such as the Patriots and Steelers have managed to keep themselves highly competitive for a decade while having the same handicap.

People who question Bill Belichick as a talent evaluator should note the alternative.

The fact is that teams like the Colts (and patriots) who have consistently come in first nearly every year and draft in the high 20′s every year are going to be thinner in talent that teams that draft low. You cannot expect a team drafting 32, 64th, and so on and so forth to have the talent around them that teams drafting 1, 33, 65, etc..

it just aint gonna happen.

Yes manning would probably have this team winning some games but the product you see on the field now is a direct result of a decade of dominance.

Were Deion Branch and Reggie Wayne top 15 picks?

My point is, if you have a solid organization, yes you’ll not draft high, but you’ll also be able to better manage your salary cap while finding great talent at the end of rounds or late in the draft.

I’m not as sure about the Colts, but the Patriots always manage to stockpile picks and trade them to get exactly who they want each year. And they seem to be counted out every year, but end up making some noise late in the season. Even if they don’t make the playoffs, they’ll be back next year. Remember when Brady went down for the year? Matt Cassel was good in his absence and they still won 11 games.

I don’t think the Colts’ problem is the late draft position as much as it is the quality of their drafts and the fact that they’ve built the whole offense around one guy, who is the only QB who fully understands it. As a result, the coordinators don’t have to do much except let Peyton run the show.

@steralize cromartie, finally. someone that gets it. you build a winning team through the draft and select free agents. many of the best players come from later round draft selections that gm`s and coaches can identify. my beloved dolphins have not had that luxuray in some time and that is why the are in the mess they are right now. our choice of gm`s and scouts has really been terrible the last 10-15 years or so and it really shows now. hope they can get someone in as a gm that can find talent for the scouting dept wich in turn translate to talent on the field.

That’s totally not true and we can add YOU to the list of “mostpeopledontknowwhattheyaretalkingabout .”

That’s why teams have personnel departments. That’s why they scout. That’s why they make talent evaluations. That’s why each team’s draft board is different.

The teams consistently at the top draft better.

NEVER grade talent by where it was selected.

Both Tom Brady and Kurt Warner should be proof enough of that.

Or Aaron Rodgers vs Alex Smith.

truth… Rod Mar-in-nelly (goofy name) had his guys putting in some kind of fight in every game… even the blowouts.
The 2008 lions were AWFUL talent wise, but effort wise, they actually showed up somewhat on gamedays, unlike the current quitter colts.

This is just part of the “Bill Polian Curse” that has been brought upon the Colts. No more championships for this team all because of the very smug Bill Polian. Polian brought this on and has it coming to him when he “rolled over” for the Jets and refused to make an attempt at a perfect season – this despite all of his players wanting to “go for it” – especially Peyton. The smug Mr. Polian responded – “It’s been done before” – but not in a 16 game season. The Chicago Cubs will break their “Curse of the Billy Goat” long before this curse is broken. Good goin’ Mr. Polian – you’ve had this coming to you.

IF only the colts had Tim Tebow! Unlike Reggie Wayne, Dwight Freeney and the rest of those bums, Tebow works hard enough to win and has the magic power to make other people play better. They need to trade Manning for Tebow so they can go undefeated next year.

This Colts’ season reminds me of the 1996-97 San Antonio Spurs season. With a healthy David Robinson the Spurs would have been a playoff team, but he was hurt that year and they sucked. They end up winning the draft lottery and selecting Tim Duncan first overall. David Robinson comes back healthy the next year and the mini-dynasty is born. Somehow just doesn’t seem right.

The 2008 Lions were almost as terrible as the 2011 Colts. Scoring-wise (points for vs. points against), the Lions were negative 249 for the season. The Colts are currently negative 163 which projects to a negative 260.8 for the season.

Note: Last year the Colts were a plus 47. The milk companies should put Peyton in their commercials…Got Manning?

It is clear that Jim Irsay and the Polians want the #1 pick (Barkley or Luck) so bad that they could care less about anything else. No respectable owner/management would have Caldwell and this bunch of coaching losers around this long otherwise. Problem is that this team is deteriorated to the point that it is a 6-8 to 8-8 team at best with Manning. They are years from being competitive in all likelihood.

If you’re logic was true then teams like the Rams, Browns, Dolphins, etc. should be powerhouse teams… since they are picking in the top 5 or 10 every year. But then why do they still suck?

It’s all about scouting. You can find talent late in drafts. And you can also find busts early in drafts.

no most people the colts were in fact built around manning. they were built to score and take the lead under his direction. the defense was set up to attack after getting the lead when the other team had to pass to catch up. they used thier cap room to pay the stars on offense and freeny and sanders on defense.they used rookies and cheap free agents to fill in the rest. without manning they do not have the leads and the defense has been exposed and can’t stop anybody. they can’t score on offense because they did not have a quality back up. great plan not giving the guy they had any reps so he played like a rookie or worse when forced to play.
