Mark Sanchez: Jets are excited, “We have a real shot at the playoffs”

Mark Sanchez has been a liability for the Jets, and he’s going to be in for a whole lot of blame if they miss the playoffs. But Sanchez says he’s not worried about that, because he doesn’t think the Jets will miss the playoffs.

“Guys are excited to play,” Sanchez said when asked today about the mood inside the Jets’ locker room. “We know that even still, as poorly as we’ve played these past couple weeks, we have a real shot at the playoffs.”

The Jets do have a shot at the playoffs, but it’s not a great shot. At 5-5, even Rex Ryan has conceded that they’re not catching the Patriots in the AFC East. And with the AFC North looking like it could easily send three teams to the playoffs, a wild card is going to be tough for the Jets, too.

If the Jets run the table they probably will make the playoffs, however, and Sanchez sounds confident that he can spark that kind of late-season turnaround.

“I need to play much better than I’m playing and take care of the football and put us in the right positions, put us in the right runs, be accurate with the football and make the right reads. A lot of it is on me, and I’ll improve and this team will improve,” Sanchez said. “I mean, I’m exhausting my resources here, I’m studying my butt off.”

Ultimately, Sanchez knows he’s under pressure, but he says he embraces the pressure.

“It’s playing quarterback in New York,” Sanchez said. “It’s great when you’re winning, it’s tough when you’re losing. So we just have to go win.”

  1. It would be a little more encouraging to us Jets fans if you say this stuff if you are 8-5.

Jets season: win 2, lose 3, win 3, lose 2.

Just go out and dominate the line of scrimmage this week, focus on beating the Bills and nothing else please.

  2. From guaranteed Super Bowl winners to being excited about “having a shot at the playoffs.” As Adam Carolla would say this guy is a real “assdouche.”

  3. They also have a real shot at 7-9. But since it’s New York they’ve just gotta run the table, tear through the playoffs and take the Super Bowl, you know.

It’s all on Sanchez so Revis and Cromartie can keep shrugging off opportunities to tackle I guess.

  4. With Rex hallucinating about winning the super bowl, now he has Sanchez hallucinating about being a good QB at 5-5. LOL, what exactly is going on in that organization ?

  5. He’s right, but I really hope they miss the playoffs so they can get rid of Schotty, I’m terrified that if they make the playoffs they’ll use that as an excuse to keep him on staff. He’s awful and he has to go. Plus, our defense is 65% scheme and 35% Revis and Harris, if we miss out, we’ll get a the pass rusher and safeties we need desperately early.

  7. We need the ‘bozos’ guy to tell us how tough guy teams do it…By the way bozos is a 25 yr old unemployed guy who lives with his parents & roots for tough guy teams…

  8. Sanchez blows, I would take Henne or Matt Moore over him anyday! the Jets have a good team but not perfect, their QB is whats holding them back and this is coming from a hard core Dolphins fan!
lets just say when the jets loose its a great sunday because no matter if the dolphins win or not there not going to the playoffs, Ill tell you kno wen the Fins ARE an ELITE TEAM a lot of people will be hopping on the bandwagon! GO FINS!!!

  9. Yeah, I’d be excited about the playoffs too if I was 5-5 with three games out of six against the Eagles, Giants, and Dolphins, and had two teams ahead of me for the wildcard while three other teams had my same record.

Excited is EXACTLY what I’d be, yeah.

  10. That’s the only way to look at it…….Kudos to Sanchez for having a great attitude and acknowledging he needs to step it up himself

The Jets do have a real shot at the playoffs, not because they are a good team, but because of their competition for that last 6 seed

It’s them or the Bungles IMO, and the Jets have a much easier schedule down the stretch so we’ll see

The Jets are certainly not the greatest at all, but ask New England how dangerous the Jets can be if they get hot at the end

Should be an interesting race down the stretch for sure

  11. This guy’s routine is as old as Rex Ryan’s. A nickel that talks like he’s a twenty. We know you know the playbook that consists of 5 rotating safe passes Mark…you just suck at running it… Don’t assume you’re gonna back into playoffs again this year chief!

  12. glad to see this guy is as dillusional as his head coach.

i hope is idea of a shot at the playoffs has better accuracy then his shots down field.

  13. This guy really is as stupid as his coach. Thank goodness for those 2 consecutive SB wins, or I’d say he was an idiot (and one who proudly dates high school girls…)

  14. This team needs a leader, not a little boy that is infatuated with 17 yr olds. Rex said he will be around as long as he is, well Rex must not envision being around long.

  15. What is Sanchez supposed to say, the truth: I am the thing holding this team back and we are depressed about it?

Sure, they are still mathematically in it. But good luck with that miracle run when you can’t even beat The Tebows.

    YOU LEFT OUT RAPIST.

  17. Rex and Sanchez r tied at the hip. In retrospect they would have been light years better off with josh freeman than wasting the 3 on an overrated qb like sanchez

So uninterested in anything this panty waste has to say….

LOL…Haven’t heard somone being called a panty waste in a long time…so appropriate tho. Nice one linemoose1.

    Go phins

  19. A steelerfan999 taking about rape… Lol. Big Ben is the most hated piece of garbage in the league. Seriously everyone hates him outside of pittsburgh.
On a related note, jets fans, read over these comments and take it in… your qb has been measured and is terrible.

  20. >will never understand the Sanchez hate. Fight on

First, he’s a Jet. Everybody except Jets fans hates the Jets.

Second, he sucks. His stats this year are slightly better than his career average. So he’s having a good year – for him. Hope you’re happy with that.

Third, watching him flit around after the snap because he’s scared would be enough all on its own.

  21. As a jets fan i do not even want this years team to make the playoffs. I would love to see them get into the playoffs just because as a fan u always want that. But this team has a lot of problems. QB and OC to start with among other things and if they were to make th playoffs thos problems wouldn’t be addressed in the offseason. I think if they don’t make the playoffs they can take a look and get those things fixed in the offseason. I also think sanchez can be an alright QB in a different system. Schotty isn’t helping his strengths. So i say give sancez another year in a different system and if he still doesn’t improve. Get rid of him.

  22. Jets will have to run the table. Looking at the schedule, Ravens and Steelers should have at least 12 wins each and Bengals probably get to 10 easily and maybe even 11 wins.

Jets aren’t dead yet but another loss and it’s curtains.

But yet, the article title was very clear and here you are

  24. As a Texans fan, I can say without hesitation that I’d rather go into these final six regular season games with our USC quarterback (Leinart) than the Jets’ USC quarterback.

  25. They’re remaining schedule is not bad at all. Amazingly, they could get in. We could go through this all over again. I hope they get in, make it to the AFC Championship again, lose to the Pats, and they “keep the team together” again for next year’s Stuporbowl run.

  26. @ Suchajoke

It’s them or the Bungles IMO, and the Jets have a much easier schedule down the stretch so we’ll see

Really? The Bengals have the Rams, Cards, Browns, and the Schaubless Texans. Not to mention the Ravens at home after the Ravens have locked up the division and first round bye so their starters maybe sidelined. Not to mention they’d probably prefer Cincinnati to get in as they will have seen them twice this year. The bengals have a very realistic shot at going 11-5 or 10-6.

So I’d venture to say the Bengals have an easier schedule.

  27. Mark Sanchez: Jets are excited “we’ll all get to golf in Maui in January”

    That should be the headline

off the bat you contradicted yourself so hard the first two sentences alone. second, you think you can give a quarterback one year under a brand new offensive system and judge him off that? what do you think jason campbell has gone through his whole career-a new OC every year. and btw im a jets fan (i know ill get only thumbs down solely off that). However, it couldn’t be more obvious that the Jets need a new OC, and I’ve been saying it for the past three years at least. But if they don’t make the playoffs, schotty better get the boot, otherwise i’ll have to question my strong loyalty to this team. go jets and hopefully we can turn things around this week.

  29. Sanchez (after losing to Denver): “We have a real shot at the playoffs”

Brady (after beating KC): It’s a short week and we have to prepare for the Eagles. . .

    See the difference here?

On their own twenty yard line, Sanchez likes his chances of getting a touchdown!
In the same situation, Brady is working on getting a first down.

Sorry Jets fans, but your chances of going to the playoffs is a real “shot”. A long shot!

  30. The Jets have been inconsistent, and yes they talk too much, but this is still a tough team to beat, and it would be foolish to write them off completely with 6 weeks left to play.

Since you have all bashed Sanchez, I will offer the only defense (excuse) that can be made. Their offensive line has not been keeping guys off him, as even Ferguson has been struggling as of late.

  31. Seems like this is a LONG way from late summer when fatso was asking the rest of the league for some help in beating the Patriots.

Going forward it’ll be interesting to see whether the guarantees keep up with the play on the field.

  32. All you jet fans need to calm down. They do this crap every year. They start great, then suck for a few weeks and then get hot and back into the playoffs. They will be there at the end as always and give whoever they play in the playoffs (probably New England) a tough time. They are not as solid as they were the last two years but are still a tough football team that always plays well enough to get lucky at the end of the season. As a PATS fan it would be awesome to see them choke and miss the post season entirely, but no one (PATS fans included) will be that lucky.

  33. At 5-5 and not having a tiebreakers with a lot of their 5-5 or 6-4 opponents will hurt them in the long run.

They can certainly make the playoffs, though.

  34. Go JETS…SANCHEZ#1 Took The JETS his first to years to the the AFC Championship and a shine away to the Super Bowl Twice…maybe this time they will take it all…and this is barely his first three years..relax..and take a shill pill or hater pill lol!
