Kevin Smith carted off in Detroit

Last week, Lions running back Kevin Smith was hailed as the best story in the NFL. This week he may be a sad story.

Smith, who went from being unemployed for most of the season to being last week’s NFC offensive player of the week, was carted off the field today in Detroit after suffering a lower leg injury.

It’s not immediately clear what happened to Smith: On the play when he was injured he wasn’t even touched, he simply seemed to plant his foot awkwardly when pitching the ball to Nate Burleson on a reverse, and he limped off the field.

If Smith is gone for a significant period of time, it would be a huge blow to the Lions’ offense: Smith’s arrival had given the running game some life after it appeared to be lifeless following the loss of Jahvid Best to a concussion.

The Lions have also lost safety Louis Delmas and cornerback Chris Houston to injuries.

In the second quarter, the Thanksgiving game is a scoreless tie.
