Report: Chad Ochocinco won’t play against Eagles

New England Patriots v New York Jets Getty Images

The hamstring injury Chad Ochocinco suffered this week in practice will reportedly keep him from playing Sunday against the Eagles.

Greg A. Bedard of the Boston Globe reports Ochocinco will not play. He was added to the injury report as questionable after missing practice on Friday.

Ocho won’t get a chance to add to his 11 catches on the season. There was some talk he was turning the corner after a big gainer against the Jets, but he barely played in the second half of that game because he’s not part of New England’s hurry up offense.  Ochocinco was invisible last week against the Chiefs.

Thing are getting worse for Ochocinco in New England before they are getting better. He’s had two catches since October 9.

Taylor Price could get a chance to play more Sunday with Ochocinco out. Price has an opportunity to show he deserves more snaps in favor of Ochocincio in the rotation.

Obligatory “He’s been playing at all this year?” comment

  2. flyermb says: Nov 26, 2011 7:28 PM

No big deal he hasn’t played all season, right?

  3. mjbulls45 says: Nov 26, 2011 7:28 PM

if he can put in 1 complete game for NE late in the season or playoffs he will be worth it,

he’s gotta do something though before this season is over, a few clutch plays will erase this seasons abyss…

  4. bengalsmofo says: Nov 26, 2011 7:31 PM

Marvin Lewis has said repeatedly since training camp that the receiving corps improved in 2011 over 2010. 85 being gone is a major contributing factor.

  5. redrew says: Nov 26, 2011 7:32 PM

Boston reporters are speculating the hammy issue is bogus. They are whispering that the hammy is fake and it is a respectful benching.

  6. righthereisay says: Nov 26, 2011 7:35 PM

    Hall of Fame 20??

Without a doubt, the worst celebration in the history of sports.

  7. jobotjones says: Nov 26, 2011 7:35 PM

I’m pretty sure this is bad news for the eagles and good news for the pats…..

  8. lexnekst says: Nov 26, 2011 7:42 PM

At least he’ll have a valid reason why he had no catches again this week.

  9. knowerofallthings says: Nov 26, 2011 7:44 PM

Maybe he can wind up on the skins roster next year; he’s running out of chances

  10. zonedogz says: Nov 26, 2011 7:45 PM

I ‘m sure Pats will miss Ochostinko.

  11. TheWizard says: Nov 26, 2011 7:46 PM

The magic ain’t there. It would have happened by now.

    They’re having a great season.

This experiment will wither on the vine.

  12. vikingsinla says: Nov 26, 2011 7:49 PM

In other news, numerous other inconsequential players around the NFL are also not playing this week.

The only thing noteworthy about Chad Johnson is that at one point, he had the temerity to suggest that one day he’d be eligible for the hall of fame. How laughable. By now, he must realize that his pedestrian career stats and mediocre skills have established his value as an NFL player to nil. Thus, he is actively auditioning for any reality shows/dancing competitions/midget baking shows on the Food network that will have him.

  13. itsmammoth says: Nov 26, 2011 7:52 PM

Wouldn’t surprise me one bit if he went off in the playoffs for 3 TDs or something…but I’m just as puzzled as everyone else with his disappearing act. He’s obviously frustrated. I don’t think anyone expected him to fall off this bad.

  14. rexismybff says: Nov 26, 2011 7:53 PM

“Things are getting worse for Ochocinco in New England before they are getting better.”

    – I like the “before they are getting better” part – funniest line of the year Gregg!

Here’s my attempt at an edit: “Things are getting worse for Ochocinco in New England before they are getting even worse.”

How long before he is a Raider? Not because they need him, or he would be of any use. Just because that’s how inane and incompetent the Raiders are.

  15. tdrundmc says: Nov 26, 2011 7:54 PM

This guy hasn’t played in 1 game this season, what an overrated turd.

  16. dirtdawg55 says: Nov 26, 2011 8:04 PM

Ouchostinko going to the Pats proved two things:

    1) he really was part of the problem in Cincy

    2) Belichick ain’t that smart

  17. jimmysee says: Nov 26, 2011 8:04 PM

He’s got to be almost done career-wise.

  18. cometkazie says: Nov 26, 2011 8:06 PM

I got the impression from the jawing Brady gave him during the Jets game that he doesn’t trust him to run the routes he is supposed to run.

    May be just me.

  19. briansalo1 says: Nov 26, 2011 8:07 PM

He hasn’t played against any team this year. Make a post when he plays, that will be breaking news.

  20. descendency says: Nov 26, 2011 8:14 PM

I’m not shocked if he was a healthy scratch because he has been pretty bad, but he has been improving and that is typically one of the things that gets you more playing time – not less.

If Chad was benched, I really think there is a worse problem then just sucking… I mean, he’s sucked all year long.

It doesn’t make sense to keep a veteran WR with no special teams value and no defensive value on the team when he sucks as a WR… the Patriots should just cut him if they feel he’s done.

  21. jpak12 says: Nov 26, 2011 8:14 PM

Hopefully Price has a big game, hes the fastest WR on the Pats roster, missed alot of training camp of his rookie year due to school obligations, had a terrific beginning to training camp and the preseason then got hurt.

  22. i3addog says: Nov 26, 2011 8:21 PM

    Who ?

  23. mrconnors says: Nov 26, 2011 8:29 PM

Oh look, a Patriots topic about a guy being benched who doesn’t contribute anyway. Looking forward to responses from the usual cast of dimwits. Steviemo, Bozosforall, Flakazoid, Child Please (although he seems to have vanished after the Jets were dusted twice by the Patriots), etc.

Taylor Price should have been playing from the start, when healthy.

  24. lilrob10201 says: Nov 26, 2011 8:30 PM

Damn.Asante Samuel vs Ochocinco would have been a good match up to see.

  25. mcjon22 says: Nov 26, 2011 8:34 PM

    Ochocino still plays football?

  26. nomoreseasontix says: Nov 26, 2011 8:38 PM

    Who? You mean Chad Johnson?
He could only get away with that stupid ochocinco crap when he thought he was relevant.
Not that he ever really was…

  27. msclemons67 says: Nov 26, 2011 8:42 PM

    Sapp’s response was classic.

“How do you get hurt on your year off?”

  28. junebug42 says: Nov 26, 2011 8:43 PM

Why did they trade for him again?? Cincy made out on that one..They get a draft pick & get RID OF A HEADACHE! Maybe he can wear that Hall Of Fame jacket on the sidelines to help keep him warm…Cuz the rate he’s going that’s the only time he’s gonna wear H.O.F jacket……….

  29. sail105 says: Nov 26, 2011 8:46 PM

Bet Brady is crying in his beer tonight over that absence. Just throw it to “The Gronk” 87 is way more than 85+2

  30. mikehockhurtz says: Nov 26, 2011 8:53 PM

“Marvin Lewis has said repeatedly since training camp that the receiving corps improved in 2011 over 2010. 85 being gone is a major contributing factor.”

That my friend, is the true definition of the term…”Addition by subtraction”

You couldn’t have said it better….

  31. j0esixpack says: Nov 26, 2011 8:54 PM

Price will get more defensive attention than Ochocinco. Dc’s know Ocho’s no threat.

  32. mikehockhurtz says: Nov 26, 2011 8:54 PM

No worries….the Eagles over priced secondary won’t be playing either.

  33. omegaichiban says: Nov 26, 2011 9:04 PM

    you mean continue to show.

  34. footballphan says: Nov 26, 2011 9:32 PM

Another Low-risk, High-reward signing that would either pay off big, or they’d lose a low round draft pick for. It was pretty much a can’t lose situation, especially since the 6th round pick would never have made their specific team anyway.

It appears that N.England will lose out on that whopping 6th rounder, however will they manage now?

At least they’ve got 2 firsts and 2 seconds (again) to make up for it next year.

More relevant signings for them in free agency this yr have been Andre Carter, Mark Anderson, and Brian Waters (all tremendous signings that have been HUGE)…but no one from the other 31 teams talks about those. It’s all Haynesworth and Ochocinco, and how “stupid” Belichick was for taking them.

  35. Steelerbear78 says: Nov 26, 2011 9:35 PM

11 Catches on the season…….that’s good, right? That’s hall of fame numbers, right? Haha! The guy is a joke. Won’t be missed.

  36. tfbuckfutter says: Nov 26, 2011 10:27 PM

    It’ll be fine.

    Exactly

  41. richm2256 says: Nov 26, 2011 11:49 PM

    Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

  42. MikeisWise says: Nov 26, 2011 11:59 PM

FYI. You guys may have forgot. The dude HAS been to 6 Pro-Bowls and he’s been named an All Pro 3 times. Hall of Fame? Not at this point. But he does have some damn good credentials and numbers despite being a bit of a tard.

  43. jetsjetsjetsjets627 says: Nov 27, 2011 12:30 AM

This guys been invisible all year. What’s the point in posting news about him? Maybe he’ll be in Oakland soon.

  44. ampatsisahypocrite says: Nov 27, 2011 12:39 AM

Ochostinko and Carson Palmer were the choke brothers in Cincy, padding their stats in the small games and disappearing in the big ones. Both their positions have been upgraded by rookies.

  45. bosstown1 says: Nov 27, 2011 1:07 AM

Would rather have T.O. at this point, only cuz its the Pats and he couldn’t tear that team up.

  46. phreakin says: Nov 27, 2011 1:22 AM

Makes me sad as a football fan seeing him end his career like this. Love him or hate him, the dude is/was entertaining. Hell he got my girlfriend watching games he was playing in. Dude was good for entertainment and regardless of the haters, he’s had a decent career.

  47. andyreidisfat says: Nov 27, 2011 3:06 AM

I’m sure Oakland would love another one of Belichick’s castoffs. Seymour has done pretty darn well there.

Then again, I don’t think they could fit his ego into the Coliseum.

  49. joetoronto says: Nov 27, 2011 5:33 AM

Jets fans making fun of the Raiders is amusing, especially when you consider that the Raiders beat the Jets earlier this year.

We all know you can’t walk the walk, but you’ll keep talking the talk anyway.

  50. MTLighthouse69 says: Nov 27, 2011 5:41 AM

11 catches + 6 million dollars = another New England Patriots craptacular signing.

The Patriots would have been better off with Chad Jackson or Bethel Johnson. Not Mr. Twitter.

  51. marcus158 says: Nov 27, 2011 6:49 AM

Ochocinco’s problems this season are really confusing.

I thought he was a decent receiver? He’s been doing it in Cincy for years with a QB who had less than half the talent Brady has.

And now he suddenly can’t catch or run a route?

I thought he’d be leading the league in receiving yards with Brady throwing to him. Instead, he’s got less yards than a guy who’s 3rd string on the Packers team.

  52. cuda1234 says: Nov 27, 2011 7:12 AM

I agree – this is not news. The guy hasn’t played all year. Could it be that the Pats actually miss Brandon Tate? At least that guy could run past someone and he also played special teams. They got SOMETHING out of Tate, they get nothing out of the self-promoting Chad TebowCinco.

  53. jpb12 says: Nov 27, 2011 7:28 AM

85 has been a non-factor. I doubt Taylor Price plays either. Seems to have had a hamstring injury all season long.

    They need Randy Moss

  54. pcoz99 says: Nov 27, 2011 8:17 AM

Can somebody say R-A-N-D-Y! The TE’s can’t be deep threats for the postseason. Now that WW has double coverage instead of a LB, and a week running game, NE needs help. What do you have to lose??

    _________________________________
Brady has already called himself out for not getting Chad the ball when he’s open so yes that is part of the problem. the other part, I believe, is that Chad so badly wants to do everything right that he’s making silly mistakes and putting too much pressure on himself to be perfect. I mean he’s a seasoned vet who ahs many good eyrs behind him…and he is still having trouble knowing where to line up sometimes (a big reason he’s not in the hurry up package, I’m guessing).

Chad’s not a dumb man at all, so I think he’s got a bit of a confidence issue going on. Whether it gets resolved or not I don’t know, but as far as I know, they are still happy with his work ethic and “want to” . At some point, that won’t be enough.

  57. predicatepanda says: Nov 27, 2011 9:03 AM

I think this may be the end of the Ocho experiment. I could see a cut coming soon. He hasn’t shown any chemistry w/ Brady or flashes of what he can do all year. In fact, it doesn’t appear that TB is even looking his way anymore. They can’t use him on special teams. At this point, he’s dead weight.

  58. theprofesser says: Nov 27, 2011 10:20 AM

I think it was Sapp who asked him on Twitter how did he get hurt on his year off?

    =====

The Patriots have little show from their 2006 draft and nothing to show from their 2007 draft.

They are reportedly paying Chad Johnson/OchoCinco
6 million dollars and he has only caught 11 balls, how is that low risk? How is that smart?

  61. patsfiend says: Nov 27, 2011 10:37 PM

With all the 2 wr sets, he never sees the field, really. Amazingly, they don’t even seem to miss the deep threat, since Brady is on pace to break the passing record for yardage.

However, those of you that are versed in the language of Belichick will know that any time someone like Chad is a late cut for a game it translates to “this guy is getting cut or traded this week.”

Thanks for nothing, Chad. Good luck elsewhere.
