Eagles meltdown: DeSean benched, coaches exchange words

New England Patriots v Philadelphia Eagles Getty Images

The Patriots drove a nail in the coffin of Philly’s fading playoff hopes on Sunday.

It’s only fitting that it happened in embarrassing fashion, with the Eagles melting down on the field and off.

Comcast Sports Net and Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News report that offensive coordinator Marty Morningweg and defensive line coach Jim Washburn “exchanged words” on the sideline. It’s unclear what set them off.

Meanwhile, the Eagles benched DeSean Jackson in the fourth quarter of the blowout loss. Jackson had another memorable drop against New England and was benched after that.

“DeSean has to do a better job. I wanted to give other guys a chance in fourth quarter,” coach Andy Reid said after the game.

At 4-7, the Eagles are this season’s biggest disappointment.  The last five weeks of the year only figure to get uglier for Reid.

Expect to hear more chants.

No Surprise Here. You Don’t Build a Team with Money and FA’s, You Build through the Draft! And you don’t have a O-line coach as your D-Cordniator

  2. sonopazzo6 says: Nov 27, 2011 9:29 PM

Has anyone else noticed that DeSean has developed gator arms much like Todd Pinkston of a few years back?

  3. bearsrulepackdrool says: Nov 27, 2011 9:31 PM

Get a better coach in here next year and this team is right back in the playoff hunt.

  4. thesmartest1 says: Nov 27, 2011 9:31 PM

DePunk can go short arm it somewhere else. Not sure who gets fired but big changes have to be made.

  5. upperdecker19 says: Nov 27, 2011 9:31 PM

Marty was in charge of guarding AR’s post game snack. Washburn was out of line to ask for a sample.

Andy Reid has been a great coach. This is a bad year.

We can only hope the Eagles fire him, so he can leave the toliet that is Philly and coach another team worthy of his talent.

  7. djstat says: Nov 27, 2011 9:33 PM

Reid is not a good coach. IN 13 years he has failed in big games, 1-4 in the NFC Championship, 0-1 in the SB. He let the inmates run McNabb out of town. Now Jackson is a cancer and he has not banished him from the kingdom.

This offensive genius insists on throwing the ball and never runs consistently. As a Giants fan, I hope he stays in Philly, but as a football fan, he needs to get kicked to the curb.

  8. howley1 says: Nov 27, 2011 9:34 PM

Couldn’t happen to a better bunch of miscreants. Have fun throwing each other under a fleet of buses. No class, no character.

  9. ud1hens says: Nov 27, 2011 9:34 PM

It wasn’t just one drop…it was 3. Twice over the middle he curled up so he wouldn’t get hit. One of those was a TD drop. The other TD drop was a 50 yarder. And he wants to get paid…

  10. whhaaat says: Nov 27, 2011 9:36 PM

As an eagles fan I hope they lose every remaining game. Even if Reid is still around next year this horrible season should light a fire under everyone’s ass for next year. So bring on those losses and early round draft picks.

  11. nycoccet says: Nov 27, 2011 9:37 PM

Watching Desean alligator arm everyball thrown to him in traffic, is so frustrating nd is going to cost him. If he doesn’t man up nd stop dropping the ball he’s never going to get that contract he wants from anyone. He is not the same player he was last year. He drops multiple balls per game bc he hears the footsteps!

  12. eaglesmaina says: Nov 27, 2011 9:37 PM

Well, I know players have to make plays but coaches have to select good coaches to coach players also. The first blame is squarely on andy’s shoulders for the Castillo debacle. Did anybody not see this coming? How do you assemble all this talent then select a guy that was at best an average ol coach to run your defense? Give me Seth Joyner to coach my linebackers, and then get me at least one linebacker. I mean an NFL linebacker that can intimidate. DeSean has to go…see ya. Andy also has to go. But Jeff will never do that because his bank account is way fat! We will see when nobody buys their team gear at Christmas though…

  13. tdk24 says: Nov 27, 2011 9:38 PM

  14. tombrookshire says: Nov 27, 2011 9:39 PM

Andy always says he has to do a better job. Every week a better job. When is he going to do it? If each week I did work that turned to crap, my boss would fire my butt after about the second screw up. If nothing ever happens after he promises to do a better job then fails, how much of that is too much? Don’t you have to get fired at some point. I know it is a game that Reid runs for the media opportunity each week, but you know, words mean things and if he can’t actually do a better job, then step aside and let someone who can.

Andy Reid is also showing he is not a great personnel director. He has final say in football matters, and his choices have lead to this team and predicament. His ability to call plays is being overshadowed by his inability to build a team.

  27. thejuddstir says: Nov 27, 2011 9:55 PM

Good to see Eagle fans finally recognizing what the rest of us have been saying for a couple of years. DJax is a diva who has one skill set, his speed. He is afraid to go across the middle or anywhere near a defender, unless of course it is after he makes a play and wants to taunt. Reid made a huge mistake putting all his eggs in Vicks basket. Vick had a great 2010 because teams couldn’t figure out how to stop him until the Vikings went into Philly towards the end of last season and used their defensive ends to keep him in the pocket and then blitzed him with pressure. Vick never was an accurate passer when he was with Atlanta and he continues to show that deficiency. Vince Young is………vince young, not an nfl ready qb nomatter how you cut it.

  28. blutri10 says: Nov 27, 2011 9:56 PM

I’m sure Merrill Reese is still somehow twisting this situation into a positive for the Eagles…the way he always does on the radio! Even though my Giants are taking their annual dive in November — it is so sweet to see this happen to such a classless city!!! And I live in Pennsylvania!

  31. plymkr88 says: Nov 27, 2011 10:01 PM

Biggest mistake the Eagles made was moving O-line coach to D coordinator. I also agree Reid is a bit overrated, but his failings are his own fault, he never got good receivers when McNabb was in his prime and never sticks with the running game. I cannot stand the Eagles so I hope they keep him.

    ==============================

Why? Reid is overrated. Remember it was HIS decision (and poor judgment) to make an offensive line coach his defensive coordinator. His Eagle’s team is incredibly sloppy with all their penalties, turnovers, and overall dumb mistakes. That falls squarely on the head coach to get his team disciplined. Oh and don’t get me started on his poor game management skills.

He’s been in Philly for what? 12 years and has never won anything. Yeah, his teams are always competitive – but as they say – always the bridesmaid and never the bride.

  37. idriveamoped says: Nov 27, 2011 10:14 PM

Just remember this Eagles fans that think they should get rid of Reid for failing in big games.

The Chargers thought the same thing with Marty S. Now look at them. Its better to be in the Playoffs majority of the time than it is to constantly sit at the bottom of the well with a good season every few years.

Don’t talk crap on Philadelphia for wanting change. It was out of line for the fans to chant “Andy Reid sucks” or whatever because he’s done a lot for this franchise, but he can do no more. He’s working 22 hours a day and still fails.

So Andy Reid goes to five NFC title games in thirteen years and has won more division titles than I can count but you think he’s “not a good coach”. Do you realize how embarassingly stupid that sounds???

Yes, it may be time for a change as it looks like things have run their course in Philly but to call a guy who has going to five conference title games “not a good coach” is just laughable.

If the Eagles cut him loose, 3/4 of the league would take him in a heartbeat.

  58. philliesphan says: Nov 28, 2011 12:01 AM

As much sucess as Andy has had here, he played a major role in assembling this (cough) team and coaching staff. Andy best coach in Eagles history, but time for both to move on. His team has tuned him out and has made very judgement in personel decisions. Wish you well Andy, but I think the end has come for you here in Philly.

  59. philliesphan says: Nov 28, 2011 12:09 AM

To the person saying Eagles would have won if Vick was QB, obvioulsy hasn’t been watching the games. Yes the defense has blown leads in the 4th quarter, but where has Vick been to march the team downfield late in the game to finish off a team or lead to a 4th quarter comeback. Vick is a loser, never won anything on any level, was a coach killer in Atlanta and again in Philly. Vick is a loser on and off the field, makes poor decisions on and off the field. I am in favor of firing Reid because of his influence on personel and coaching decisions(Castillo), but if you keep Vick at QB, it won’t matter. He is the most over hyped QB in history, everyone falls in love with the Madden football QB instead of realizing he is a mediocre QB with lots of holes in his game. Everyone see what he could be, few see him for what he really is, a loser below average QB>

As an Eagles fan (that lives in Texas), I must say I am utterly appalled at the reaction in the stadium today. Yes, I am aware this has been an absolutely terrible season for us, and we have a lot of things that need to be fixed, but how about we dial back the witch-hunt just a bit. I think it was a terrible decision to make our mediocre offensive line coach our new defensive coordinator, but I do not think we need to have anybody’s head on a stake just yet. Coach Reid has been a good coach for many years, currently the longest in the NFL, in fact. And if he has to go, then he has to go, but let’s not be ugly about it. We are having one “bad” season. Hey, guess what? It happens sometimes! There were a lot of big changes this year and there was very little time to work through them. So, let’s just chalk this season up to a loss, sit back, and hope to get a really good draft pick next year. Also, let’s relax with all of the booing. Would you want to play your best for group of fans that treated you that way? I wouldn’t!

  62. mlmeier says: Nov 28, 2011 12:35 AM

I’m a bit confused. Numerous sites are referring to this loss as officially eliminating the Eagles from the playoffs. Now clearly its seems more than unlikely that this Eagles team would somehow sneak in; but aren’t they statistically still in the running? They still have to play Dallas and they’ve already beaten them once, so if they win out and end up with the same record as Dallas and New York, I believe Philly would take the division.

It’s obviously a far-fetched scenario given how they’ve played, but I’m curious if I’m correct in my reasoning or if I’m overlooking some detail that truly does eliminate them from the playoffs.

I’d appreciate it if someone could clarify this.

Andy Reid is failing on so many levels over the past 2 years, and has lost me as a supporter of his. As a fan who bleeds green on Sundays, here are the top 3 Andy Reid F-Ups that are just unforgivable to me…

#1 – Castillo. If you don’t know, read above.
#2 – 2010 draft – trades up in draft for yet another undersized DE. Taken one pick later? Earl Thomas, the rookie pro-bowler who was the clear choice to fill a huge area of need.
#3 – $100mil for Mike Vick (they will be using a high pick on a QB within 2 years)

    Feel free to add yours…

It’s funny how people say Vick isn’t having a good year he’s doing ok by me. I thought people draft and build for scheme. Andy said that but didn’t produce that . My problem with him is he went and got two of The best man corners and continue to ask them to play zone . If he doesn’t go he needs to bring in a big name defensive coordinator . This team can win every game left but won’t because he won’t man up on defense , or that he made the wrong decision to promote Juan.

  70. coastbreak321 says: Nov 28, 2011 4:00 AM

A lot of you are absolutely ridiculous- it’s easy to tell that many of you never played a sport in your entire life and don’t really understand the intricacies of athletics because you spend more time focusing your energy and garnering excitement from another team’s failure than you do concentrating on your own team’s efforts. Some of you are cooing over how you’ve so enjoyed the Eagles’ season thus far- who cares? All that should matter for you, as a fan, is whether your team is standing on the podium clutching the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the year.

As for those who claim that this team was built around FA, I find that notion to be erroneous and played out: this team is largely built around players from the draft and castoffs who no one else really wanted (i.e. Michael Vick, Vince Young) Let’s go through the starters just to make sure: Vick (castoff), McCoy (draft), Herremans (draft), Watkins (draft), Kelce (draft), Mathis (FA), Peters (trade), D. Jackson (draft), J. Maclin (draft), Avant (draft), Celek (draft); so 3 of the 11 starters on offense were either traded for or picked up as FA. Defense: Cole (draft), Patterson (draft), Jenkins (FA), Babin (FA), Rolle (draft), Chaney (draft), Fokou (draft), Samuel (FA), Coleman (draft), Allen (draft), Asomugha (FA); so 4 of the 11 starters on offense were signed via FA.

More than 2/3 of the starters were drafted and, before this “spending spree” (as many of you like to call it), the Eagles were in the top 5 in terms of cap room in the NFL. A lot of the players they acquired were guys who signed for a year who wanted an opportunity to play for Andy, especially Vince Young.

You really think that Philly beats the Pats with Vick? Really??? Dude, New England spotted you a 10 point lead and yet, the Eagles had to score at the end of the game to get within 18. Brady only completed passes to four guys, just four guys! The All World defensive backfield gave up close to 400 yards in receiving to four guys. 55% conversion rate on 3rd down for New England. Yeah, Vick would have shut that down. Ron Mexico is 3-6 this year after getting paid. Maybe the Eagles brain trust should have checked with Arthur Blank about the wisdom of giving Michael a bunch of cash. Lesean McCoy got his water turned off. One run for 22 and then another 10 carries for 9 yards total.

I questioned the Eagles’ faithful regarding the wisdom of having a shaky OL and no LBs prior to the start of the season. I was told that Philly would be so far ahead that their flaws would never show. How’s that working out for you? The Eagles pushed “all in” this season with their commitments to guys like Vick, Jenkins, and Nnamdi. I’m sure that Reid was a big part of those decisions. When it blows up in your face and the best you can hope for is to try and play spoiler, you’re NOT one of the 3 best coaches in the league. Not this year!

DeSean needs to get that chip off his shoulder or he could end up in a similar predicament as T.O. and Randy Moss: talented wide receivers with over-inflated egos, not currently playing in the NFL.

So Andy Reid goes to five NFC title games in thirteen years and has won more division titles than I can count

You can count to five but you can’t count to six? Use your other foot.

Andy Reid: .601 as a head coach.

Tony Romo: .639 as a starting QB.

Yet to some of these Eagles fans, Reid is a winner and Romo is a loser.

You iggles fans can have Bradly Childress back! I hope you do fire Andy Reid. I wouldn’t blame his “coaching”.. I’d blame him as a “GM”… Look at teams that have won recent superbowls. And all teams should look at this. It could change the way free agency is done.. GB, NO, NE, Indy, Steelers.. Show me once where they went out and spent big money and brought in big name players to win the super bowl? They haven’t. They have built thru the draft. NO is the only team there that didn’t draft their QB, but they went and signed him as a FA after major shoulder surgery. But they didn’t win it all that year…

Now, go and look at teams that have tried to “buy” the lombardi over the past few years… Skins, Vikings, Iggles.. Vikings had a good year in 09, but thought 10 would be better, they flopped. You can’t buy championships!

Packers? drafting built their team. Lions? Drafting… Pats? BB trades good players for more picks..

Blame your coach all you want. But it’s not coaching. It’s the “GM” position..

Dream Team keep under utilizing the best player you have. McCoy should be run in to the dirt.

Did you like how Welker displays how it is to be a professional? He just plays ball without all the pouting and histrionics that exemplify that egirls squad. De punk looks so tough on the bench but he just flat out is a whiner and a cancer on that team. Diva with no heart. Haynesworthless and De punk should have a contest on who can make the meanest looking face while not doing anything to help their tem on the field.

Vince Young is………vince young, not an nfl ready qb nomatter how you cut it.

wait a minute. Please don’t count the “dream team” out of winning this years Super Bowl. Before you count them out, please ask yourself this question; who let the dogs out, ruff ruff, who let the dogs out, ruff ruff? This is payback for all the dogs Vick killed and instead of being the nfl, vick should be seving a life sentence in prison!

    ————-

Their only hope is that the Bears, Falcons, Lions and Giants all lose 4 of 5 and they beat Dallas again, while hoping Dallas loses 4 of 5 otherwise.

That’s just not going to happen.

They hold no tiebreakers over any of these teams unless the Giants completely choke away every one of their three remaining divisional games.

The Eagles looked like they were going thru the motions today, as if it was last week of the season and they had a playoff game next week and didn’t want to get hurt. This lack of being prepared and motivated is a direct reflection of the coaching staff, how in the world do they not get fired?

    ————-

Just as the Giants did last week, while allowing them to look like they were doing something — STILL only managing to “win” 17-10.

This team is over. Thank God.

“The Giants wrote the book on how to stop him, everyone else copied it.”

You don’t need a book to write “bust him at the line and cover him over the top”.

“They’re BOTH choke artists. No one cares about regular season records. They’ve both had stacked teams for years.”

Yeah sure undrafted Romo throwing to undrafted Miles Austin, Roy Williams, 7th round pick Patrick Crayton, third round pick Jason Witten, a stable of nothing special RB’s, playing behind makeshift OLs and a questionable D vs. Andy and his plethora of highly drafted QBs, WRs, RBs and defensive players. For Pete’s sake they handed out over $200 million in contracts to defensive players alone this season. They can’t even BUY Andy a team. You’re the kind of guy that will sit here and tell me how stacked the Cowboys have been then turn around and tell how bad Jerry Jones is in talent evaluation and acquisition, aren’t you?

The Giants wrote the book on how to get beaten by the Eagles with Desean Jackson. I believe they are 2-7 against the Eagles since Jackson was drafted (Cowboys are 5-3).

  92. drobstad says: Nov 28, 2011 9:18 AM

Well… That pretty much solidifies the fact that DeSean Jackson will not be an Eagle next season… As a Giants fan, I can’t say I’ll be sad to see him go.

Always a great morning when you hear of a Philadelphia team in meltdown. All the hype before the season and the fans and players believed it….could not ask for a better finish for all of them

  95. Derty Ernie says: Nov 28, 2011 10:37 AM

I love it, live for it, when dream teams fail. What impresses me is when a star athlete wants to win based on his or her performance dominating others and not join a bunch of other stars to ensure victory.

Duke isn’t successful because of coach K, OSU, LSU, USC and so on aren’t winners because of great coaching, its all the top players now only want to be on the team that gets to be on the big stage. Its now about competing anymore its all about me me me and being on the big stage.

The Eagles are finding the big names they went out and got aren’t so talented after all. The fact is they are all standing around waiting for something to happen.

  96. tatum064 says: Nov 28, 2011 11:01 AM

Thing is, you get the feeling that should Andy Reid leave, The Eagles likely go downhill. They would need an OC, they have a lot of money on the books going into 2012′s cap, they have talent, but the defense is a mess.

Anybody think Jeff Fisher could straighten this thing out? I just think Fish is low key enough to go into Tampa and turn that right around.

I would initially say Gruden would come in and completely live up to the hype, but that would again, bring out the dream team hype all over again. One thing is certain, Reid is a good football coach , that simply stuck with the wrong DC. Very likely he moves on and would be successful – anybody think he’d move to Cleveland (with Shurmur doing a “one and done?)
