Rex Ryan praises Aaron Maybin for win over Bills

New York Jets v Buffalo Bills Getty Images

In two seasons with the Bills, Aaron Maybin never recorded a single sack. In one game against the Bills on Sunday, Maybin recorded two sacks in the Jets’ 28-24 win. Jets coach Rex Ryan liked what he saw.

After reviewing the game tape today, Ryan singled out Maybin for praise and said he was a major reason the Jets won.

“Maybin, he had six quarterback hits, two sacks [and] made a great play on the screen pass,” Ryan said. “The all-hustle team right there. I really like that about Maybin. He plays with his hair on fire and it’s encouraging to watch.”

For Bills fans, hearing that about Maybin has to sting. After the Bills took Maybin with the 11th overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft, it was one negative story after another out of Buffalo about why Maybin couldn’t translate his natural athleticism into productive play on the field.

Ryan said he thought Maybin was highly motivated to play against the team that cut him.

“Obviously, that game was special to him,” Ryan said “Any time you play against a team that’s released you or whatever, you want to have a great game.”

Maybin has said that Ryan saw something in him that the Bills’ coaches didn’t. Ryan seems thrilled with the way Maybin has repaid that confidence.

The Jets win Back to Back Super Bowls the past two years and they just keep adding talent for the Threepeat. Greatest 6-5 team in NFL history. Just ask Rex.

Too bad he couldn’t get motivated while in Buffalo.

Yeah he saw that Maybin was going to play hard against his former team. That’s not exactly rocket science. If he plays like that consistently from here on out, then Rex gets credit.

Pears should be fined for that cheap shot on Maybin.

  8. lilrob10201 says: Nov 28, 2011 8:28 PM

Im sure he wanted to play his ars off to show the Bills that they made a mistake for letting him go.

If the Jets lose to the Skins this weekend, is Rex then placed on the hot seat?

And this is why JETS > Jills and REX RYAN > Chan whoever.

He can coach, he wins, he can get stuff out of guys who can’t even get third team snaps on a horrible football team, and he’s 6-0 against the Jills in his three years as coach of the greatest team on the planet.

    HI HATERS!

  11. bleedgreen says: Nov 28, 2011 8:31 PM

Why would he be mad at Buffalo? They paid him millions of dollars for no production. I’d be glad they let me go, to be honest. If he’s doing well with the Jets, then thats in part because Buffalo didn’t let him wallow on the bench just cuz he’s a 1st rounder.

if its 3rd and long, he can get after the qb. i think buffalo probably was hoping he could do other things like set the edge, stuff the run ,etc. He is still a liability in coverage

Really? I’m dumbfounded by the silliness of some fans. Get a clue.

Nice to see Maybin show something after 2 seasons of zip.

However, make no mistake; no matter how well he plays, his play will never erase the el busto that was Vernon Golston.

I’m a Jets fan, but its people like this that give us a bad name. Get your facts straight. We’re 5-1 against the Bills under Rex, losing a game in October 09 when Sanchez threw 5 INT’s.

  24. mianfr says: Nov 28, 2011 9:52 PM

Maybin on a pound for pound basis really has been our best player this year. I hope he can keep it up, but he honestly hustles harder than any other player in the league during the few snaps he gets.

The Bills weren’t wrong. He’s not very big and his only move is to simply run around the edges and get to the quarterback.

Fortunately for Maybin, that’s fine, because with his motor he is constantly making plays. One one drive this past Sunday, the following happened:

1st Down: Maybin gets in with a pressure, Fitzpatrick panics and throws it away.

2nd Down: Maybin gets in with a pressure, Fitzpatrick panics and throws it away.

    3rd Down: Maybin sacks Fitzpatrick.

He was the only bright spot on the team in the game against Baltimore (absolutely played his heart out, sack and a fumble).

He’s a really, really good player for the Jets.

  25. anonymouslyanonymouscommentor says: Nov 28, 2011 10:07 PM

You fools! He was leading the Jets in sacks and forced fumbles going into the game.

  26. dirtyharry1971 says: Nov 28, 2011 10:12 PM

whats being left out here is that Maybin went up against what exactly? The bills are missing more then half their offensive line in this game and even when they have everyone their line still sucks. Lets see Maybin have a game like that against the Pats

  27. henryjones20 says: Nov 28, 2011 10:58 PM

Bunch of numskull fans in bflo.wanted and got there wish for bills to cut him after only 2 seasons. He had received the bulk of his contract money so he was only making the veteran minimum so it didn’t make sense to cut him.dumb bills fans tan lynch and mcgahee out of town also.oh and Antoine winfield nate Clements Travis Henry Jason peters yet keep chris kelsay.haha

  28. jbravo2312 says: Nov 28, 2011 11:48 PM

He played well cause he wanted too, he ll vanish,.fyi rex, bills scored on maybins best series, r boyz have no shot against real teams who dont self-implode, theres a reason y after Sanchez 3rd td r fans were booing on r next possesion,, Maybin fits r “all hype” team perfectly

  29. orthodoxdj says: Nov 29, 2011 12:58 AM

Aaron Curry is a similar story.

  30. bspurloc says: Nov 29, 2011 2:14 AM

yeah Maybin the same guy he cut twice this year…..

thought Rex was good with defense. dude is best pass rusher they have but gets cut twice

  31. championshipbeltmove says: Nov 29, 2011 5:27 AM

You Jets fans that talk about making the AFC championship the past two years are kind of annoying. No one cares that you mad the championship, except for Jets fans. You didn’t win the superbowl so does it matter that you made it to the semifinals? No one remembers the team that lost the conference championship game. I get that that is all you guys have goin for you but in reality it really means nothing in the end!!! And sorry to say, but Sanchez is not a good quarterback. He just isn’t! Packer fan btw. Not a bandwagoner either. Grew up an hour south of GB. On another note, was in Key West two weeks ago when the Pack played the Vikings on MNF. 23 out of roughly 80 people there had Packer apparel on. It was awesome. I was also there when the Jets lost to the Broncos. Maybe 8 Jets fans in the same bar. Saw more Bronco jerseys there! Pretty awesome when your fanbase (smallest market in professional sports) outnumbers the largest media market in the US. Proud to be a Packer fan!!!

This seems funny coming from someone who uses a Bills player as his screen name…
And no, we didn’t TAN, we RAN the problem maker Lynch out who was always suspended anyway. McGahee didn’t want to be in Buffalo, so why make him stay? Winfield wanted WAY too much money for his skill set, Travis Henry ended up being a bust, Jason Peters plays half-assed and quits on plays, when he is on the field. The only one I’ll give you is Clements, but again, he was very pricey. Also, you name me one Bills fan that has a say in who we keep and don’t. Fans don’t make decisions for the team, I think that person would be the GM….Numbskull.

  33. EJ says: Nov 29, 2011 7:29 AM

That picture looks like hands to the face.
Besides, Maybin only ever gets coverage sacks. He should give back the millions he stole from Buffalo, he didn’t earn one penny of it. All he did there was show how important a rookie wage scale is. While in Buffalo he was playing for fun, now his job is on the line, so he is actually trying, Rex Ryan has nothing to do with it.

  34. stanmark says: Nov 29, 2011 8:56 AM

Hilarious that a few are chiding the Bills for letting Maybin go. The fact is, the kid turned into Albert Haynesworth, flipped his switch into diva mode and refused to produce anything while in Buffalo.
FAR MORE impressive and along the same lines was Brad Smith’s performance. Brad Smith on Offense was a better show than Maybin on Defense, but no talk at all about the Jets “letting him go.”

  35. waldoampere says: Nov 29, 2011 9:05 AM

“If you didn’t win the SB…all of it doesn’t matter”

So you don’t care if your team makes the championship game or goes 0-16? Ridiculous.

As a Bills fan, this makes me sick to my stomach.

  37. richc111 says: Nov 29, 2011 9:45 AM

I can tell you the what the difference is between Maybin on the Jets. The Bills D is really bad and they can’t afford to have a guy on the team that can only come in on 3rd down sometimes and just speed rush. The Jets have a lot better D and that might be the exact guy they need on 3rd down, not every down!. Also what does the Bills and the Jets both have in common? They both have cut Maybin. Don’t forget, Maybin was cut but the Jets in training camp but was brought back after an injury.

  38. lobacz87 says: Nov 29, 2011 10:20 AM

That Brad Smith comparison is horrible. I love Brad Smith, but look at his numbers this year. Is he worth 15 million a season?! No way. He scored 1 TD all year and that was against his former team…WOW…Maybin has been consistent this year, he leads the team in sacks. You mix the Jets defensive scheme and his skill set, you have a match that they didnt have in Buffalo. Good luck with Merriman.

  39. ravensmike410 says: Nov 29, 2011 12:49 PM

Rex has known Aaron since he was a teen at Mt Hebron High School in MD. They met while Aaron was a top prospect in high school and Rex was Defensive Coordinator of the Ravens. Rex knew Aaron had the potential to put it all together at the NFL level. So, it made sense to see them scoop him up after the Bills released him. I don’t see why Maybin wouldn’t be on a list for Comeback Player of the Year.

  40. pigskinswag says: Nov 29, 2011 1:10 PM

Much to my (and probably everyone else’s other than Aaron himself) surprise, Maybin has been a great pickup for the Jets. Maybin hasn’t played this good since he was at Penn State. Maybe ever.

  41. raiderstotheship says: Nov 29, 2011 3:10 PM

Just wait until you see this kid next season under ryan, he lacks the coverage ability but as a pure pass rusher he will be nasty.

  42. stanmark says: Nov 30, 2011 9:34 AM

brad smith vs. Jets > Aaron Maybin vs. Bills
