Why is anyone really even considering the possibility that the 49ers stand even a slight chance of beating the Green Bay Packers?

Comparing the two teams is a borderline insult to the Packers (and I’m not a fan of either team).

All it does is give 49er fans a false sense of legitimacy, as if they can really contend for a Super Bowl when they have the worst QB of any team even sniffing the playoffs at this point.

Watching last Thursday night’s game, I couldn’t believe that the Niners have won as many games as they have, watching that debacle of a 9-sack surrender by what has been touted as one of the “best young O-line’s in football.” BULL. They looked terrible.

The "best young O-line in football" had TWO key injuries that night. Apparently you weren't paying attention or just don't care because that would get in the way of your 49er bashing.

Bottom line is, if a team can shut down the run, the 'Niners are going to have to hope for touchdowns out of their defense. Because Alex Smith simply cannot throw the football, beyond the dink-n-dunk game.

This is why they lose to Seattle, in Seattle. The Seahawks can at least shut down the run.

The 'Niners will be 12-4 and will win the NFLs worst division. Good for them. It's a huge improvement over last year, and that's what fans should be excited about....the direction. Not as much the current state of the team.

The Packers aren't going to lose in the playoffs because they had an easy regular season schedule. You don't get to 11-0 by accident. Are they overrated? It's impossible to really know, but I would guess pretty much every team that starts 10-0 is going to be at least a little overrated because the focus shifts to "can they be beaten." Of course they can be, because this is the NFL and teams that are 18-0 lose the Super Bowl. But if they do lose, no one should point at their schedule and say "see, they weren't even that good."

Very similar with the 49ers. They are a very good team. A lot of people are going to say "I told you so" if they don't win the Super Bowl, but every single person underrated them this year. They have played well and probably haven't reached their full potential. Meanwhile, the rest of the teams in that division are on the decline and need to be rebuilt in one way or another.

People who are insulting these two teams are either misguided or completely deluding themselves. No two fan bases have it better right now.

When looking at point differential for the Packers and Niners, the Pack is a +155 and the Niners are +104.

The Niners have beaten three potential playoff teams this year. Dallas, NYG, and Cincinnati.

The Packers have beaten four potential playoff teams. Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, and New Orleans. You could say five if you want to throw in Denver, but that is a far different team now that came to Lambeau.

Overall I give the edge to the Packers.

------------------------------

Ahem, you forgot the 49ers also played Detroit, so by your tally of possible playoff teams both have beaten four.

Also, jarrman46, I was simply pointing out that the 49ers won all those games on the road despite having to travel three times. It wasn't whining, it was pointing out the 49ers overcame that difficulty in addition to beating those teams.

The difference between doing that and the travel schedule of teams like Pittsburgh is that the league generally tries to spread out games like that over a season. Pittsburgh had to travel west to play Seattle in week 2, but it wasn't until week 7 that they had to travel that far again. They will travel to the 49ers again in week 15. All of their other games are in the eastern of central time zones.

Peter King called it the "most challenging travel schedules I have seen in 27 years covering the NFL: five trips to the Eastern Time zone in a 61-day span." In addition having a team travel three thousand miles on a short week like the Thanksgiving game hasn't happened in the NFL since 1975. You can boohoo it all you want, the fact that the 49ers went through the last five weeks and only lost one game is impressive.

Finally, I wasn't really questioning the Packers. They're obviously the class in the NFL. I'm just pointing out that people who readily question the 49ers strength of schedule would never dream of questioning the Packer's schedule, even though numerically up to this point the 49ers have had a more challenging season. It will even out because the Packers have a very difficult stretch of games coming up and the 49ers are now finally going to face the NFC West.

If the Packers played in the NFC West they would have clinched a playoff spot 3 weeks ago. What has taken the 49ers so long? __________________________________

Your point must be that the NFC West is weak. Insightful. 4 of the 49ers last 5 games are against the NFC West, so, they really haven’t played the weak teams much yet. Pay attention.

No one should be questioning what the Packers have done. They are the champs until further notice, and have gotten to 11-0 by beating tough teams and winning games they are expected to win. The 49ers have exceeded expectations this year and excelled as a complete teams in winning the tough game. I.E. Cincy, giants, lions, etc. They also have beaten the teams that they SHOULD beat. The same can not be said for other teams in the league like the saints, giants, dallas, lions, and yes even baltimore. Bottom line both the Packers and 49ers are in position as 1 and 2 in the league and early playoff clinchers because of one thing.....winning!

Eagles cowboys rams seahawks bucs browns cardinals.. actually they did play mostly weak teams alrdy ..nd it only gets weaker with the exception of the steelers..I think u should pay more attention.

——————————————-

The 49ers strength of schedule up to his point has been around the middle of the NFL. Meanwhile the Packers have had (up to this point) one of the easiest strengths of schedule in the league (it gets much harder in the coming weeks). Strangely nobody seems bothered by the Packers win’s, but everyone wants to paint the 49ers schedule as easy when the numbers don’t agree. The Packer’s opponents as of week 11 (the last time I can find numbers for it) had a combined win/loss total of 41-59. The 49er’s opponents on the other hand was 47-53.

The 49ers had a brutal road schedule this season, including three trips east in four weeks. They’ve won against teams which could make the playoffs including the Bengals (away), the Giants and the Lions (away).

Not only that but there aren’t easy wins in the NFL. Say the same thing to the Saints who lost to the Rams or the Ravens who lost to the Seahawks this year.
--------------------------------------------------
NO, Atl, Chi and Det weren't exactly gimmies, but yes, the schedule is slightly easier this year. Frankly, after what they pulled off last year, maybe they deserve it.

With a run game that was lost for the year 15 minutes into game 1, and 1/3 of the starters and 1/3 of the roster missing by week 5 they managed to:
win @Philly,
win @NYJ,
lost by 3 @Atl
lost by 4 @ NE with backup QB
split 2 games w/Chicago, including the clinching win @Lambeau to make playoffs
(5 road games @ teams who made the playoffs)
also had to beat a good Giants team @Lambeau to make playoffs

once in as 6th seed, had to
win again @Philly
win again @ Atl
win again @ Chi
beat Pitt in Superbowl

and while doing all of the above, depleted roster and all, they never trailed at any point in any game by more than 7. A feat not accomplished since 1962 even with a healthy roster.

Yeah, your schedule is tough...

————————————————–
NO, Atl, Chi and Det weren’t exactly gimmies, but yes, the schedule is slightly easier this year.

Yeah, your schedule is tough…

If the Packers played in the NFC West they would have clinched a playoff spot 3 weeks ago. What has taken the 49ers so long? __________________________________

Your point must be that the NFC West is weak. Insightful. 4 of the 49ers last 5 games are against the NFC West, so, they really haven’t played the weak teams much yet. Pay attention.

It will be nice for the Niners to get back to the playoffs, but Thursday night’s game against the Ravens proved just how ready they are to make a run for the Super Bowl this year.

Hopefully they can build on the success, and not take a step back next year.

They lost one game against a very good Ravens team on a short week after traveling across three time zones while struggling through two key injuries on the offensive line. You can't make a judgement about success in the playoffs based on one game.

A couple years ago the Patriots defeated the Giants to end with a perfect regular season record and then lost to the Giants in the Superbowl. The Packers had six losses last year, including two late to Detroit and New England, and they went on to win the Superbowl.

Not making a prediction of how far the 49ers will go in the playoffs, they may flame out quickly, but it would be a mistake to write them off at this point, especially when the loss was against a team which could easily make a run for the superbowl themselves during a game that was tied or within three points for the majority of it.

It will be nice for the Niners to get back to the playoffs, but Thursday night's game against the Ravens proved just how ready they are to make a run for the Super Bowl this year.

Hopefully they can build on the success, and not take a step back next year.

That's nice but the important thing is that the Colts have clinched the Suck for Luck sweepstakes.

They actually can win a game and still no other team can "catch" them.

Maybe they'll actually try to win against the Patriots this Sunday and try to give their fans something to cheer for.
