Haynesworth was suspended for 5 games for that action. Nice try.

This is a GAME guys. A violent game. Guys get hurt and maimed WITHIN the rules. If you don’t suspend someone who tries to injure someone outside the rules then we just have Rollerball (which was a great movie but I don’t really want to watch athletes die on the field.)

I don’t agree with the suspension. It’s more of Roger Goodell’s heavy handed approach to player behavior. (They saw it on TV so something has to be done). I remember when Albert Haynesworth stepped on a guy’s head who was laying on the ground without a helmet. Was he suspended? NO!

Suh has anger management issues and he needs counseling not suspensions. The NFL has only had one commissioner and his name was Pete Rozelle.

The suspension is 2 games without pay. Even if he sits out, the league will either tell the Lions not to pay or OR could suspend him for another 2 games.

Just once the league should increase the suspension after an appeal. Any other “appeal” in life carries some risk. They should do the same here.

I doubt the Lions are up to competing with the Saints with or without Suh. It seems that Suh is up to playing mind games however. It is something like having a six-year-old head on a grown man’s body. The word ‘petulant’ comes to mind.

Are you serious? Do you work for the media, because you are embellishing just a bit here. Dietrichs livelihood was barely at stake with that situation.
Suh was out of line there, but it’s nothing more than crap that happens all the time in these games. The media and league spotlight has been on Suh, and so here we are today.
Everyone needs to just move on. He’s getting his deserved suspension. Get over it already!

Wow, Lawyermalloy, great point. Follow the money. By “voluntarily” sitting out the game pending appeal, he thinks he’ll still gets paid. So him sitting out this game is between him and the team. And it will have NOTHING to do with the league suspending him for 2 games. BRAVO! You are a good lawyer, Malloy. Solomon like solution, the only fair,logical one to me.

Sticking it to the league??? If you watched that game on Thanksgiving, you’d know that no one even realized Suhsie was in the game, and it wasn’t apparent until he pulled the WWF move that anyone even saw him all game.

You’re not too high profile of a player when you’re on your arse or back the whole game….and being beatdown by a no name O-lineman, to boot.

Either way it falls his 1st game back will be IN THE BLACK HOLE. Last time he came to the Bay Area, the 49ers ANTHONY DAVIS THREW SUH AROUND LIKE A RAG DOLL. I expect no less from Jarod Valdheer. Suh is an immature player of low intelligence and this season is proving it. He hasn’t dominated, he gets mad and it costs his team! Bring it on 12\18 Suh, the Black Hole is waiting…

Why would that be the best approach? Because you work for NBC and ratings would be higher if Suh were playing Sunday night? Sounds like the best approach from Suh’s perspective would be for him to sit the Saints game (a likely loss anyway) and win his appeal and get to play against the Vikequeens.

**On a side note, the NFL powers that be and the media are turning this league into a soap opera**

Love these threads. There are always a couple of lazy fans who throw out stupid comments. 1). Can’t wait for a player to take out his knee garbage. Players have been going at Suh’s knees all season so it won’t be some grand payback, it will be because o-lineman have been dirty and double teaming him all season to slow him down not because of some scale of justice. (2) the comments that Suh is having a bad season. The Lions are a top 10 defense and lead the league in Third down defense. They are top Five in turnovers. Suh collapses the pocket and doesn’t allow a QB to step up. On the play Suh for kicked out he pushed the pocket in so quickly

If anything, his penalty should be increased…….the fact that he is going to appeal is evidence that his apology was fake and he has no remorse. He got off easy with just the 2 gms and I believe the NFL will regret that slap on the hands because it wasn’t harsh enough to deter him from continuing his dirty play……wait til he seriously hurts another player and that player sues the NFL, that will surely get Goodell’s attention.

Is smith appealing something that happened? This isn’t Suh against Smith. This Suh(basically the NFLPA) against the NFL. Do you feel the same way when other guys get suspended for on field actions(rarely) or fined for something on the field when their fine gets reduced? Fines are almost always reduced when players appeal them. So that means the NFLPA doesn’t care about the player they hit to deserve the fine? “Come on man”

Suh will lose on all counts . The NFLPA already told him that the formality of filing a complaint probably goes nowhere and that he will miss two games regardless so it may be best to start now and get it over with.
Why the NFLPA would ask him to appeal for the sake of others is another reason why I hate unions, they have this pain in the ass all the time mentality.

Is it possible that he voluntarily sits for their upcoming game and appeals the suspension. The suspension is upheld and he has to sit for the next two games (missing three games total)?

If he sits isn’t he effectively telling the NFL to go flip themselves and he will sit whatever games he damn well feels like?

You really think Suh would sit because they don’t think they can win against the Saints? That’s absurd. This is the NFL, a good team (lions) can beat a great team (saints) on any given Sunday. Having your best defensive player available for your toughest games makes more sense than sitting him and playing him against an easier team.

Perhaps he realizes he was an idiot and he wants to just sit the two games and get it over with (because we all know there’s no way this is getting reduced). The sooner the suspension is finished the sooner he puts it behind him and helps the team for a playoff push. Ask all of those star caps players how it feels having a pending suspension hanging over your head, just get it over with.

As you said, the appeal is just a formality and it’s being done to protect future offenders.

Brandon Jacobs threw his helmet last year AT the Giants bench, and it got caught on his hand and went into the stands in Indy.
He didn’t throw his helmet at any human being purposely. He immediately apologized. Even so, Giants fans lashed out at him on local radio and online, including me, and rightly so. We DO NOT support that kind of behavior in Giants football. While some cities like to have that reputation, and say they don’t care, the Giants care how they are perceived. You defending your boy, who is clearly delusional, is a problem.

You need to get your facts straight.

If there is an appeal process why shouldn’t Suh be able to use it how he wants to use it? Perhaps the Lions believe they can beat the Saints after what they saw last night? The Saints lost to the Bucks and Rams so its not like they are going to concede. Maybe their play last night fell right into tendencies.
Take your medicine talk is for chumps and kids. Suh is a grown man who could lose 2 pay checks. Maybe this doesn’t affect Suh’s finances but it surre as heck will affect the league minimum player. 2 games will be the standard for offenders if he holds his head down and takes it. Players and fans should be concerned the league can suspend a player for two games without cause of injury on the field.

“Voluntarily” sitting out a game and getting paid in the process, is obviously not the same as being suspended(W/O pay).
I would suggest that if he appeals and decides to sit out a game VOLUNTARILY, the leagues is not bound by his act of sitting and still give him a two game suspension after the appeal process.

Why should Suh or the Lions want to “stick it to the league” for any reason?

Both Suh and the team have publicly stated that Suh was in the wrong, why would they interfere with the league’s disciplinary policy?

I’m not sure how playing games with the system helps rehabilitate Suh’s reputation with the league or the public, for that matter.

As I said before, with or without Suh the Lions are probably going 1-1 in their next two games. So just sit out the games, and show you meant what you said in your apology.

And, by the way, come back nice and fresh for the stretch run that will determine whether you get into the playoffs or not.
