The Steelers clan clinch this weekend with a win and losses by the Bengals, Jets and Titans because they could finish no worse than 10 and 6 and those teams no better than 10 and 6. They would have the tiebreakers against each as a result of head to head or conference records.

The Ravens can't clinch, even with a win, because they lost to the Titans. If they end up with the same record as the Titans at 10 and 6 they would be out of the playoffs (because they lost head to head) - unless the Steelers lost out and finished at 10 and 6 as well. However, they wouldn't clinch the playoff spot until a tie or better with the Steelers is guaranteed (or if they are guaranteed a better record than the Titans). That can't happen this weekend no matter what happens.

So, we have an oddity this weekend. The team that currently sits in the wild card spot can actually claim a playoff spot before the team that sits in first.

Aren't you forgetting when Ray Rice took the first play from scrimmage 80 yards for a TD in Foxboro a couple years ago? Which led to a dominating road playoff win?

When's the last time the Patriot's were in the playoffs?

I'm trying to remember but the only things I'm picking up are words and numbers like

Rice, 159, yards, Brady, Three , interceptions

I don't remeber the final score tho, care to remind me

@gforce90

Why do you/people hate the Steelers? We are a fun loving bunch who support our team since there is nothing else to do around here in the winter.

We have nothing in common with The Yankees who buy their championships, with Duke who recruit the best players every year and their fan base is a bit snobbish, Notre Dame who has its own television deal. The Heat since they signed the 3 clowns!

The Steelers are just good because they have made sound decisions since they hired Chuck Noll back in the 70s. Before then they were not very good.

We know who's out, who's in if they win enough and who needs help. Doubtful, that it will end in any manner prognosticated here.

Nope, Sundays game blew chunks.

But the fact that you would use the same stupid line ( the raiders cant handle succeess) that Warren Sapp has been spewing every time he open his dumb mouth is just really annoying. Especially after they have overcome so much adversity this season to still be tied for first.

Again, the StD disChargers welcome that type mindset from their fan base. Maybe you should ask Santa for P Rivers Jeresy for xmas.

I don't understand all the grief people are getting for asking how the Steelers can clinch, but the Ravens cant. They're tied in record and per this article, the Ravens hold the tie breakers, so how do the Steelers clinch a playoff birth if they are not able to clinch the division this week by any combination of wins and losses? And why can't the Ravens clinch with the same combination of losses that would allow the Steelers to clinch a playoff birth? Should explain these things...

The Ravens can’t clinch because they lost to the Jags and Seahawks, two of the worst teams in the league.

They also gave their head coach, not one, but two Gatorade showers after two regular season wins. Serious organizations don’t do this silly crap.

“And the Raven’s cant clinch why?”

Texans, and Patriots have 2 game leads plus tiebreaks over their divisions, so easier for them to clinch.

Steelers are Ravens both have a harder time clinching as a result. Steelers can clinch but Ravens can't yet because Steelers hold a tiebreak over the Bengals who are one of the teams in the running for a wildcard. The Ravens have only played the Bengals once so that tiebreak is still up in the air.

klunge: Ravens are first in the AFC West but could easily drop to 2nd if PIT wins more games. So if they got in they'd be a Wild Card. But HOU and NE get in, they've won their division, so they'd be automatically ranked in the top four in the conference.

Remember last year? SEA was the 4th ranked NFC playoff team...even though they had a losing record. Division winners are necessarily ranked 1-4, with the Wild Card teams ranking 5 and 6 in each conference.

Really went out on a limb with that one. Stick a fork in ‘em, they’re done. Does any team handle success any worse than Oakland?

I didnt know that Warren Sapp read this blog and posted as a r8rsfan?

Fans like you are pathetic, they just came off a 3 game win streak and losea road game to team that is making a habit of winning of late and you have one foot off the ledge.

Really? after the last 10 years of Raiders football you want to complain about a team tied for first place. You need another hobby... trying being a Chargers fan. Jumping on and off the Bandwagon is accepted in their fanbase.
