First of all, Archie really needs to shut up and stay out of Peyton's business, and the media needs to stop talking to Archie. Finally, Peyton needs to retire.
All this talk of trading Manning doesn't make any sense even if they do pay him his money. Yeah the Colts obviously beyond suck without Manning but Manning is one if not the greatest QB to play the game. It makes more sense for the Colts to draft Luck and let Luck study Manning for a year and then obviously trade Manning. Yet at the same time it's quit possible that Luck can come right from the draft and start immediately. The Colts are in a weird situation... Keep Manning and draft Luck who would obvously start the next season after a season behind Manning, who arguably is one of the best QB's to play the game, trade Manning but to where? Or another possible situation would be for the Colts to pass on Luck and go after some receivers or some other position besides QB. Obviously there is a lot of positions that needs to be added for the Colts other than a QB.

Why do people live under the illusion that the Colts could get anything for Peyton Manning? What do you base this on? Remember the Chargers couldn't even unload Drew Brees and he was outright shown the door by the Dolphins for a mere shoulder injury that 5 years later is non-existent. NFL teams do not go after health risk players no matter how much you Colts fan think Peyton is worth. Peyton will be released to he can choose the team he wants.

As for this notion that Peyton should just "retire with dignity", what you mean is retire so us Colt fans don't have to choose between Peyton and the Colts/Luck. It's pretty darn clear that Peyton is doing everything in his power to play, and until he is told definitively that he is paralyzed from his next sack, then he will play. I think he'd be a good fit in Houston personally ...

Archie is dad of the year! Taking bullets for his boys is just what he does. You can bet he, Payton and Eli are on the same page.

The Luck’s are already learning from them. Watch and see Oli take the bullets so his boy’s image stays clean and marketable.

One thing is obvious: the Colts have tanked this season. Losing one player does not turn a playoff team into the worst team in the league. That said, what will the Colts do with that pick? Past experience proves that a team cannot pass up a potential 10 year starter at the most important position on the field. I think Manning will retire, be given a management position within the organization and allow the Colts to draft Luck with little or no controversy. He's a class Guy.

Why are people so sure he is one hit away from paralysis if he returns? Quite a few other players, ones who play physical positions like OL, have had this procedure and returned to play, including a former Colts player ( DB K Hayden).
It sounds like at this point, the nerve regeneration is the main obstacle.

.

The idea that Luck will sit on the bench and merrily watch the games is ludicrous. Athletes like him have been "star " of every team since grade school. They want to be on the field competing instead of watching Tyler Palko, Chad Henne, Matt Moore, Colt McCoy, Tavares Jackson, Blaine Gabbert, and TJ Yates hold down starting jobs.

once again people are only saying these things because manning isn't playing this year. people are acting like this injury occurred in the off season or last year. this is an injury that manning has been to two super bowls with( it actually happened in 05' or 04' season) and he had these surgeries to try to deal with the pain and discomfort he been dealing with since then. has everyone forgotten that he PASSED his physical at the beginning of the season? the pain and soreness was still there, so he had the 3rd surg. and with the city set up to earn some nice money from the super bowl, its a perfect time to suck and get a high draft pick. I think this was all planned.

Tough spot for the Clots. Yes, Clots. Because there is clearly a blockage of blood flow and life giving oxygen.

Anyway, it’s a tough choice. Cut a proven commodity that may not be able to play well again for a speculative commodity that may or may not play well at all. Or absorb the financial pain, keep the proven commodity, that, again, may not be able to play well again AND draft the speculative one and hope for things to go well.

Look as bad as this team is without Peyton, does anyone really believe that he is all they need to win a title? No. It’s not like the Patriots, who went 11-5 with Matt Cassel. The Clots are not a good football team right now. Even with Peyton back next year, I don’t think they win it all.

If it’s me, I cut Peyton and draft Luck. Barring any sort of contract renegotiation.

The Colts don't seem to have a lot of options except maybe one that was not discussed above: What if Peyton can't come back from his injury or the Colts determine his best days are behind him. It may make a lot of sense to cut him, get nothing for him but save 28mil and move on. Thus, taking the chance that he will not be as effective for whomever ends up getting him and probving their decision to be a good one.

The Colts would be stupid to pass on Luck for a QB who is one hit from a wheelchair, I have to assume they aren't that stupid of sentimental. They should learn from the Pack who pushed sentimental (Favre) to the curb for Rogers.

Even if they could afford to keep both Manning and Luck, it's Luck who can't "afford" to sit on the bench for a few years.

Under the new CBA any top draftee needs to play and produce at a high level quickly in the hopes of getting out of their rookie contract into a more lucrative long term deal.

Luck will get HALF of what previous top QBs have gotten. He can't play his way into a better contract if he's sitting on the bench.

If Manning is on the team and starting, Luck will demand a trade, and no one should blame him.

Echoing a lot of what has already been stated, unless the Colts name Archie Manning an executive of football operations, he needs stay out of this. I understand he got his way with Eli and the Giants, but that didn't do anything for Eli or Archie's image.
This is a business and the Colts have to position themselves for a sustainable successful model going forward. If they can afford it and pay Peyton and draft Luck, then they should. As a business decision it makes sense to play arguably one of the best quarterbacks of this era, while setting up the transition to the future. Peyton is not going to play forever and Luck is, by all indications, a talent you do not pass on. As far as Archie Manning's assertion that Luck is "ready to step in as Newton, Dalton and Gabbert have been this year," my response is "sure if you want a 7-5 or worse team." You don't play for mediocrity, you play for championships and you try every year to position your team for that goal year in and year out.
Archie should stop TAMPERING in the Colts affairs and colluding with Oliver Luck (Andrew's father) in doing so. If Andrew is a professional and has any interest in being positioned to win championships, he would recognize that the opportunity to learn from Peyton is a huge positive. Besides, it's not as if he wouldn't be making a very comfortable salary while doing so.

imo Manning should do his best to come out of this with the fans supporting him and not seeming like he is after the money.

This is precisely why Archie is doing all the talking now. Peyton can float his options and opinions through his dad without any of it tarnishing his own image. Aside from his football salary, the Peyton Manning image is worth millions in endorsements deals, which he is also protecting and looking after by staying at arm's length from any of these discussions.

I guess Manning and Luck are going to push the Colts to trade Luck...to Harbaugh & Co.

Seriously though, the Colts should keep both players and screw what their daddy's say. The Colts can't trust Peyton with that injury; he may never play again.

The Colts should focus on getting Peyton healthy enough to pass a physical and trade him. His salary is crazy. They could purchase a new secondary with the money they will save...Luck won't make real cheese until year 4 or 5?

walker615 really has the best solution for the Colts: Trade the pick to another team for a king's ransom of draft picks. Use one of the picks to get the QB prospect of the future (it's a very deep draft for such prospects), and use the rest to build the team up to get Manning another shot in his final couple of years....and also to improve the team for the young QB when he's ready to take over.

Not sure where turdferguson heard about Manning to SF or Seattle rumors, but as a Seahawks fan, please God, no. We want a young QB who can open a window for long-term success, and we certainly don't need to trade what would be required to get him. Getting Manning would mean a huge, bloated contract that would prevent us from spending on other areas of need (like a pass rush specialist to complement Chris Clemons), and he's probably only got two good years left, anyway.

If the Niners wanted to mortgage the ranch for a 1-2 year shot with Manning, a 36-year old QB with a growing history of neck injuries, I wouldn't mind a bit. Be kind of like Joe Montana going to KC for his last few years.

I glanced through and did not see this in the comments.
I dont see Manning matching the contract he has with the colts if they cut him and he signs elsewhere. He is simply worth more to the Colts than anyone else. Like Jeter in NY and Chipper Jones in Atlanta.
BUT...much like Farve in GB, that value can be killed by his replacement.
So the financial motivation for Manning could be to get that $28 mil due date pushed back to allow for his contract to be traded. The new team probably would insist on a new contract as part of any trade, but pushing it back gives him a shot at keeping the big Colt contract.
Manning has shown in the past he is motivated by money. We've all talked of how his contracted limited the Colts ability to surround him with talent. A strategy that obviously worked well until he got hurt.

Trading the pick does make sense to me. Loading up on picks that would include the one used on his replacement would not be a bad move. Assuming Mannings contract does not still limit their ability to also start collecting the free agent talent they will need to succeed without him.

OH...and you can state you are turning pro before your college season ends. You cant officially declare, but you can let it be known what you are going to do. Like Luck said, he sees no point in making a grand announcement, since its been a forgone conclusion for monhs now, if not longer.

If Manning won't retire now, the colts should just release him and if he wants to play somewhere else and if there is someone out there who is insane enough to pay him that kind of money when he is one big hit away from a wheelchair - go for it.

As for the p.r. nightmare, etc. - take the hit now, get over it, get through it, whatever - then move on.
