There's something I don't get about this sequence.

"On Tuesday, Redskins tackle Trent Williams and tight end Fred Davis received four-game suspensions for their most recent violations of the substance-abuse policy. On Wednesday, they apologized for suspensions ............ They talked to us today in a team meeting, just letting us know they’re remorseful and that they’re apologetic about it."

If people are suspended I thought they weren't allowed to attend meetings or practice or use team facilities or have contact with coaches or the team. WTF?

ufustfireflyjr says:

“Shouldn’t even be testing players for marijuana use — that’s between them and applicable local, state and federal laws.”

Of course they should. It’s a business and the continued success of that business depends largely on public perception of the players. Mom and Dad aren’t going to buy player X’s jersey for little Johnny if player X is a stoner. It was collectively bargained by the union, for which I’m sure the players received something in return.

The OG LT was a crazy coke head. I doubt his jersey sales ever went down. The funny thing is that cocaine clears your system in 72 hours while marijuana takes 28 days. The message being sent to players is "If you're gona use a drug, use coke". Just saying

Are they sorry for what they did or sorry for getting caught? How about an apology to those fans who pay their salaries through ticket and jersey sales? They're the ones who are getting hosed in it all.

If it was marijuana its no big deal. It should be legalized anyway its just big pharma companies know they'll lose too much money and are doing anything to keep it illegal. Cigs and alcohol are responsible for half a million deaths each year while marijuana doesn't even kill anyone from body failures or cancer. If it's because of marijuana four games is stupid. I don't get how society doesn't see anything wrong with alcohol and cigs but you mention marijuana and all of sudden people freak out .5 million deaths is definitely better than using a plant which your body benefits from. Just saying.

Marijuana is a "recreational" drug for lots of couch GMs and FF playahs, but it wouldn't be surprising if NFL athletes use it for fast-acting pain relief with side effects that wear off quickly. The League does not routinely check for pain relievers. Johnny Jolly got suspended for getting arrested, but the League wasn't watching out for the addiction monkey on Johnny Jolly's back. These two got suspended not because Johnny Law got involved, but because they got found out through the League's drug testing (where the results are secret until the League decides the time is right for the PR point). This action was about the League protecting the brand, not about player misconduct (who would know other than the league?) or safety of the player. Marijuana is not the same as a performance enhancing drug; its a "morally" banned substance (and a low cost, low medical risk alternative to expensive synthetic pain killers).
