Welker will explain mysterious wrist cast on Friday

Wes Welker AP

Patriots receiver Wes Welker appeared on Wednesday’s practice report with a knee injury.  And yet he was spotted in the locker room on Thursday with a soft cast on his wrist, three days before Sunday’s game against the Redskins.

According to NESN.com, it’s a thin black cast, “almost like a sleeve.”  Welker also was spotted wearing the cast on Tuesday night at a charity event.

Welker says he’ll address the cast on Friday.  Maybe it’s simply a fashion statement.

If it’s not, then the injury should have been disclosed.  Just like the “right shoulder” injury with which Tom Brady supposedly wrestled for years.

Aren’t the rules that if you miss any part of any PRACTICE you have to be on the report? According to what I’ve read, he hasn’t missed any practice. If he has, he’ll be on that thing, I guarantee. If anything, IMO BB OVER discloses now to tweak the idiocy of having to do an injury report.

By all indications, #83 is falling apart…
    …or Belichick’s playing games.
    You decide.

Troy Polamalu was asked to comment on this and how teams will hide injuries. Unfortunately, after the many concussions he’s suffered, he was unable to speak coherently. Please note that the Steelers have listed him “active” again this Sunday.

He plays for the New England Chearoits so the NFL does not enforce the rules for them.

If it were any other team they would lose a first round pick and be fined $500,000.

Colts fan – gotta give him a break.

an injury that does not affect practice participation whatsoever is not required to be reported.

He’s a good foot soldier, I’m sure he’ll find something entertaining to say tomorrow.

    @all4patriots . . . .

To borrow a phrase from my friend Peter King, “You’re wrong and here’s why.”

Players routinely appear on the practice report as “fully participating” in practice with one or more injuries.

Also, the “probable” designation means a player is injured but virtually certain to be available for normal duty.

Thus, every injury — no matter how slight — should appear on the report.

  12. nyjalleffingday says: Dec 8, 2011 5:36 PM

Clearly, he’s spending too much time thinking of Tom Brady.

  13. bertilfox says: Dec 8, 2011 5:37 PM

Wasn’t Tom Brady always listed on the injury report because he was limited (by the team) to preserve his shoulder after his injury and offseason surgery in ’02? That didn’t mean he was injured. It was only precautionary, but it required him to be listed on that League mandated report. Perhaps it was malicious compliance…but it was compliance nonetheless.

  15. earthtopft says: Dec 8, 2011 5:50 PM

It’s just to cover the brass knuckles on his hand so he can get in a few good uppercuts at the bottom of a pile.

  16. neelymessier says: Dec 8, 2011 5:51 PM

Hmmm, he was reported with a knee injury on Wed’s injury report. He practiced. Maybe he has a mild wrist sprain FROM PRACTICE, after the report was submitted.

  17. rapskins says: Dec 8, 2011 5:51 PM

If he had both arms, and both legs in a cast…it won’t matter against the Redskins.

  18. weepingjebus says: Dec 8, 2011 5:52 PM

The same NESN.com article says: “which would be within the NFL’s guidelines if the wrist injury had no bearing on Welker’s availability for Sunday’s game against the Redskins.”

Makes sense to me, since I don’t usually see a lot of cavities or infected hangnails on the injury report.

I am assuming with Gronk on your team with his circle of friends lately that any and all single guys would find a “companion” and wrist injuries wouldn’t occur.

  26. phadedwun says: Dec 8, 2011 6:34 PM

I think we all know how a guy obtains a ‘mysterious wrist injury’.. huh? ;) ;)

…No but in all seriousness. Why do you set a different day to announce why you have the cast? Do you need that much time to come up with an excuse?

  27. hoosierhandicapper says: Dec 8, 2011 7:01 PM

    Another manufactured story. Shocking.

  28. bozosforall says: Dec 8, 2011 7:06 PM

He was playing grabass with Edelman…and things got a bit out of control. He had to “calm down” Edelman because Julius became a bit too “excited”.

  29. heisthejuan says: Dec 8, 2011 7:10 PM

Ummm, have you looked at a Pats injury report this season? They have almost 20 guys on it every week. At this point I think Belichick over reports just to mess with Goodell.

  30. rexismybff says: Dec 8, 2011 7:32 PM

Is this the same Pats team that nearly lost to the Colts at home last week?

Yeah, they are gonna need all they can get from Welker. Can’t wait until Von Miller gets to take out Brady on a few plays next week.

  31. donz0 says: Dec 8, 2011 7:42 PM

He’s on my fantasy team (Crumville Coyotes), I’m starting him and he’s gonna roll up the Redskins D and smoke ‘em.

  32. cliverush says: Dec 8, 2011 7:57 PM

Pretty sure there is a photo of him in the Boston Globe wrapping Christmas presents at a function. Hope he did not cut himself. The type of cast described in the article resembles the type used for Carpal Tunnel.

  33. mrconnors says: Dec 8, 2011 8:05 PM

I’m sure Bozosforall has thought of many scenarios like that involving Patriots players. He is OBSESSED with NE.

It’s sort of like Terrell Suggs and him constantly bringing up Tom Brady. What is their fixation?

Nope. But it’s the same Patriots team that swept your precious Jets hahahaha!!!

It’s Julian. A few mire decades of higher education should gix your wagon.

To everyone who thinks they’re using the injury report for gamesmanship-

In the past, true. Currently all the focus is on getting a young team ready for Washington, and then the post season. A young team getting ready for the post season. I like it.
