Ponder returns to practice, but status up in the air

Denver Broncos v Minnesota Vikings Getty Images

We probably won’t know the Vikings’ starting quarterback until Sunday.

Christian Ponder (hip) returned to practice on Friday, which coach Leslie Frazier said was necessary for Ponder to have a shot at playing against the Lions.

Tom Pelissero of espn1500.com notes that Joe Webb took most of the first team reps during the portion of practice the media saw. Webb took all the snaps the last two days and looks to be the favorite to start.

Adrian Peterson was at practice again despite his high ankle sprain. It’s unclear how much Peterson is doing at practice, but signs are pointing up for his return to the lineup.

UPDATE: Both players are questionable. Frazier knows which direction Peterson is going. Frazier may want to see Ponder work out again Sunday morning. Ponder mostly did individual work Friday.

Frazier didn’t say he would have a shot if he practiced Friday, he said he was going to play if he practiced Friday. I don’t think Ponder’s going to miss this game.

That’s what happens when you don’t have an O-Line. I’m surprised how good Ponder has looked, actually. Every play is broken. He has to scramble and throw, or get it out of his hands in 2 seconds. Better get some O-Linemen in there before you get a David Carr QB.

Can we rule the entire secondary as out?

I’ve been mentioning how bad the secondary has been for a long time now, ESPN did some research on just how bad the Viking secondary has been, and an article from the Viking website written by someone other than Mike Wobwhatever (finally)…..

    —–
Over the last 20 years, according to research by STATS LLC, the Vikings finished in the top 10 in pass defense four times and only once (last season) since 1996. They’ve been in the bottom eight 10 times, three of those at 30th or worse. Yards can be an accurate barometer, but they’ve given up plenty of touchdowns too. The Vikings have been in the top 10 in that category seven times in 20 years, but they were 20th or worse
    eight times.

This year? They’re dead last in the league, with 24 scores allowed through the air in 12 games.

•Eye-bulging numbers from 1500ESPN.com: “In the Vikings’ past seven games, opposing quarterbacks have completed 73% of their passes (146-of-200) for 1,808 yards, 18 touchdowns and no interceptions.”

If Ponder was smart, and that’s debatable since he signed a contract to play in MN, he’d sit the rest of the year and start over again next year in the warmth of LA.

let webb play, ponder can heal. lose the rest of this year’s games, they’re just pre-season for next year’s continued rebuilding and 8-8 would be optimistic

This is really crazy, and the league needs to look into the injury reporting here. The Vikings coach says he already knows if AP will play or not, but doesn’t want to tell anyone? The reason for injury reporting is not to make it easier for players on the opposing team to target injured players, it is to prevent one way a gambler could have inside information that could dramatically effect betting lines. Frazier has created a situation where a small number of people could have significant inside information to use in betting that isn’t otherwise available to the public. If this doesn’t violate the letter of the rules in this regard, it certainly violates the spirit! It would be really interesting to find out if Frazier has any money on the game…

Gb4mn0 I feel sorry for you, it looks like the packers are the only thing you have going for you if you feel the need to make a negative comment about the injury report of a 2-10 team while GB is 12-0, good luck with that,

    ……
I love how you constantly troll the Vikings blog and drop a negative comment everyday on every Vikings related post. You must have a horrible life to be obsessed so much with a team you claim to hate. Then you criticize people on the Packer blog for “hating” on the Packers?!?! Here is your post from over there:

I love all this hatred toward the Champs. Please keep making fools out of yourselves. Especially all you purple excrement balls from MN and the kitty box droppings from Detroit.

    Can you say hypocrite???

Gb4mn0 your life sounds sad if you feel the need rip the weekly injury report of a 2-10 team while GB is 12-0 and defending SB champs. Enjoy it, people like you create bad karma in the form of season ending injuries, not to mention a bad name for GB fans, if AR goes down people like you deserve it

Get off your high horse. Viking fans brought this attitude to themselves when you were all laughing and trying to shove Brett-The-Wonder-Horse down our throats, with a presumptive in-your-face finger-wave cast in our direction just as soon as you won the big one (which never happened…predictably.) Payback is a bitch. Apologize and all will be good.

What are you, the karma police? Payback is a bitch? What payback? You had a hand in the 12-0 season as well as the vikes 2-10 season? Its pitiful the amount of hate that a 12-0 fanbase can direct towards a 2-10 fanbase. I dont understand the obsession with a 2-10 team, amazing. And all this coming from a fanbase that claims the Vikings arent their rivals. You guys are sad.
