Roethlisberger in a walking boot with high ankle sprain

Cleveland Browns v Pittsburgh Steelers Getty Images

Last night, Ben Roethlisberger — and plenty of viewers at home — thought he broke his leg.  As it turns out, a league source tells PFT that Roethlisberger has been diagnosed with a high ankle sprain, based on an MRI conducted today.

Per the source, Ben is in a walking boot and “not feeling good.”

The news makes even more remarkable the fact that Ben returned to action for the second half.  But it also means that it’s not a sure thing he’ll face the 49ers in 10 days.

Peter King of SI.com and NBC was in the Steelers’ locker room after the game.  He’ll explain what he saw at the top of NBC Sportstalk tonight at 6:00 p.m. ET on VERSUS.

I sure hope this Rape artist know as Big Ben plays on Monday night. No excuses. Lets go 49ers.

Which means SF is all but guaranteed a win and GB has to keep winning regardless of whether they want 16-0 or not.

My foot and ankle guy (no kidding) told me the other day that for a normal amateur athlete like your or I with a high ankle sprain, he recommends booting for 3 weeks and limited activity for 6 weeks. I don’t know how these guys even think about playing with that injury.

  4. kingviking414 says: Dec 9, 2011 3:50 PM

I’m no Steelers fan, but man, this guy has guts and determination. Just him walking on the fiels last night was remarkable.
Guys like DeSean Jackson could learn a few things here.

look, i may not respect his off the field antics, but this dude is tough as NAILS…steelers fan or not. I’d love him as my QB #jetsfan #goeswithoutsaying

  6. moosev says: Dec 9, 2011 3:52 PM

I’m not a Big Ben guy and his 79yd. TD killed my fantasy team (since I thought I only had to eat a half game from him), but it was the stuff of legend. Big Ben haters will light up the board with envy. Still, a stupid move to let him play the second half with a HAS. He is more needed next week v. the Niners you would think.

  7. ravensj5 says: Dec 9, 2011 3:53 PM

Trust me he will run onto the field in SF with his cape flying in the wind. The 49ers will not be as kind/ stupid as the browns….he will get blitzed often!

  8. steelersownyou says: Dec 9, 2011 3:53 PM

49ers suck. They remind me of steelers in1996… Played good defense but had no offense because the QB was very subpar! And that’s what 49ers are subpar. Ben can rest for a few weeks. Let charlie batch take care of this soft 49ers team! Easy win!

  9. wtf2812 says: Dec 9, 2011 3:54 PM

For anyone who knows football and is not on here just to bash, it is obvious that Roethlisberger is the toughest son of a gun in the game. Whether you like him or not, at least give him that much.

He may never win 4 SBs like Bradshaw did, but he has supplanted Terry as the toughest QB ever to wear a Steelers uniform, something I didn’t think anyone would do in my lifetime because Bradshaw was one tough hombre when he played.

  10. ccoolahan14 says: Dec 9, 2011 3:54 PM

Biggest drama queen in NFL history.

  11. gregeer says: Dec 9, 2011 3:54 PM

We’ll hear all week long about how he’s the NFL’s toughest warrior but there’s no way he can play this week then SHOCK NEWS he plays on Monday in San Fran. Cut me the story. Just because no one else makes such a big deal about their injuries.

  12. dealer009 says: Dec 9, 2011 3:56 PM

Harrison should get AT LEAST a game for launching up into McCoy’s chin. Given his history of fines for exactly this, and given that he has intentionally headhunted in that situation before, it’s no question.

  13. getyourownname says: Dec 9, 2011 3:56 PM

Ben is tough, no doubt. He also dramatizes.

If he plays in 10 days, hard to believe he really has a high ankle sprain.

  14. bubba9er says: Dec 9, 2011 3:57 PM

I have had a bad high ankle sprain. It feels like your foot is going to turn around the wrong way and you can’t do anything about it.

Big Ben has taken a beating in his career, some of it on the football field (motorcycle accident). All I know is that he must be one tough dude to keep going with all the dings he has taken.

As a 9er lifer I hope the Steelers play it safe and rest their franchise QB for the playoff run. He always seems to play better than expected with these injuries.

  15. earthtopft says: Dec 9, 2011 3:57 PM

Ben missed a few plays while the training staff rushed over to the horse race track to get the proper medicinals to get him back out on the field. They wear off in time.

  16. 3menandablog says: Dec 9, 2011 3:57 PM

I’m sure he’ll play against the 49ers. You can’t count out the determination of a rapist.

  17. henrykissingerisgod says: Dec 9, 2011 4:02 PM

Thankfullythe steelers play the niners…all the steelers need to put up is 13 points for the w…

The difference in organizations is obvious. If the niners win it will be the biggest win in years when the steelers win it will just be another game

So many people earlier were saying he was faking it too. You can’t fake his ankle twisting like it did last night. Let me guess the doctors are in on it too and the walking boot is a publicity stunt.

  25. marvsleezy says: Dec 9, 2011 4:11 PM

Not all high ankle sprains are as severe – It might not be that bad – Most other players would have to take time off based on the position they play – QB is one position you can play with this injury.

  34. rickster8 says: Dec 9, 2011 4:42 PM

Ben is a gamer, say what you want about him off the field, but on the field, nobody tougher than this guy. I bet he plays next week. Heck he played the 2nd half lastnight??????!!!!!!

A friggen head on motorcycle accident couldn’t even stop the guy. Unless his leg falls off, he plays next week guaranteed……

  35. fancyleague says: Dec 9, 2011 4:52 PM

I laugh at the bitter clowns who call him a drama queen. The only reason you see him with these injuries is because he gets on the field with these injuries. Other players tap out and go enjoy a hot dog on the bench. Ben’s out there playing and winning. Peyton’s playing golf on Sunday while saying, “Oh, my sore neck. I better take a year off.” Yeah, Ben’s the drama queen.

The romo and big Ben toughness bs has to stop. Funny how romo never showed any effects of his injuries later. Not once. Ben at times moved 100% normal as if forgetting to limp. Great players but these “severe” injuries are being over inflated just a little

  43. shieldsisland37 says: Dec 9, 2011 5:27 PM

Can anyone else see him chasing a group of young women with a boot and a limp? “wait, stop, I have some candy.” haha like he cant catch them because he is hurt. So funny. What a piece of trash, I hate this guy. If it was not for football he would be in jail or living in a trailer park.

  44. dmobey says: Dec 9, 2011 5:30 PM

Bathroom Ben – you’re sooooo tough.

Except that most players would have walked off a twisted ankle.

    Not Rapelisberger.

Nope, he has to make sure that EVERYONE knows he’s tough.

    Drama Queen no end.

  45. bubba9er says: Dec 9, 2011 5:30 PM

If Ben doesn’t play against the 49ers on Monday night, it will just be another “weak win” for the 9er haters to complain about. A win is a win.

Last I checked, it was the Steelers that still have a playoff spot to worry about.

    @steelersownyou

The 49ers are #1 the NFL in THE bottom line defensive category: fewest pts allowed. Also, #1 rush defense,no 100 yd rusher all year & not 1 rushing td allowed all year. Stats courtesy of nfl.com. Where are you getting your info from. The steelers D leads in 1 category passing D. The 9ers boring offense is much like the Ravens. How’d those games vs Balt. go for you ?

Ben plays he will throw all over that below avg secondary of yours. It wont matter anyways. Packers will crush you in playoffs & we all know what steelers do in playoffs! Who would have thought at the beginning of the season this could be the best game all year, and on a Monday night nonetheless! Big Ben is the toughest player in the NFL after last night and I applaud his dedication.

Here’s to hoping Big Ben is healthy enough to play in 10 days as this will be the biggest test for our 49ers of the season. We don’t want to have any excuses for winning or losing.

Boy when is enough, enough? You Morons that feel you know more than law officials about the accusations on Ben are just so pathetic. There is no evidence that these crimes were committed. There IS evidence that the girls wanted to be with Ben AFTER the allegations. (Most of you probably didn’t know that. Gee, what a surprise). The only proof of anything is that Ben had a tendency to be arrogant and rude when he would go out to bars and clubs. Anyone who thinks there isn’t a chance these ladies were looking for more than justice (maybe a new diamond ring or condo somewhere as part of a cash settlement) is part of the “Moron” category. Get a life and get over it. Roethlisberger was falsely accused as far as most people are concerned and if you believe different than consider yourself a Commie Chinese or North Korean sympathizer since they do consider people guilty unless proven innocent over there. How miserable is the city of Pittsburgh, where one’s entire self worth is tied to his childhood football team? It is no wonder why masses have left that city for greener pastures.

    *************************************************************

Were you simply making a snarky remark to gain attention, or are you really *that* naive or narrow-minded to make a judgment about an entire city/region, on the basis of some guy on a football website that goes by “Steelersownyou?” In either case, does that really make you any better than he? Way to be a total chump, pal.

Also, I’m assuming you’ve lived in Pittsburgh previously at some point or grew up there to be making such generalizations about the region. I don’t live in Western PA, but the people I know from there are pretty far from miserable. Get over yourself.
    —————–
I’ve been to that area many times and think it is very pretty.
However, you should see the trash talk trolling that your (supposed) fellow steeler fan is doing. I think many steeler fans are intelligent and we can have a good discussion without flaming others.

I don’t think steelersownyou is a real fan. Most likely a bandwagoner.

MrLynch how old are you? You write like a 12 year old.

Really?? I didn’t know that my post would be graded. Actually, I am 4 yrs. old, which makes what you said a compliment! You TYPE like someone who failed their grammar class.
P.S. – I’d rather be a guy who writes like a 12 yr old than a guy who supports a rapist

Aaron Hernandez played on a high ankle sprain immediately after he got it. Then he was out several weeks.

If you keep it moving and take a pain shot you can obviously play but the next day is when it becomes impossible. Him going out in the second half yesterday had to have placed additional stress on it. I think he’ll be out several weeks. If he comes back in 10 games THEN I’ll be impressed.

Hey PFT, why is this post even allowed on here? The “rape” stuff needs to be stopped here. Not only is it false, but no one needs to read that subject matter here. Please do your job and eliminate this crap. Thanks.

Meanwhile, Big Ben is the toughest QB in the league, no other QB is even close. Glad he is a Steeler.

    GO STEELERS!!

I love all of the Ben bashing. He’s a top 4 QB and I wouldn’t trade him for anyone! So you guys keep bashing him and he will keep on winning! Three SUPERBOWL appearances and two of them wins. How many does your QB have?
    ——————————
If he’s a top 4 QB why wouldn’t you trade him for a QB ahead of him? Could it be that you are dense? That Pittsburgh education is coming quite useful, I’m sure!
    ……………………………………………………………………………..
possibly you lack an education all together.why would any team trade one of the top QB’s in the NFL?that would be foolish.

    @steelersownyou

i am a steeler fan always have been grew up one.but man ease up with your comments.they make you sound childish like the rest off these idiots.all you are doing is feeding them.its like a stray cat you feed them and they keep coming back.let them spout off.it just shows there character and how childish they are.

  90. pensacolasteelers says: Dec 10, 2011 8:34 AM

@steelersownyou 96′ Steelers offense wasn’t like our current offense but it was much better than any offense we had when Mark Malone or Bubby Brister was the QB. Malone was decent but I never thought Brister was any better then a backup.

I was hoping it was broken, of course. He deserves more, much more.

Looks like Tony is going to have to help out with the naive and drunk young women in the bathrooms more than usual given this disability. Ed will just continue to look the other day and deny, deny, deny when confronted by their concerned friends.

    Pittsburgh, you should be ashamed.

  93. dougdoug2 says: Dec 10, 2011 11:09 AM

bobhk…I didn’t say he’s the fourth best QB in the league. I said he’s one of the top four Qbs in the league. I personally think he is the best. There is not much separating the top 4 or 5 Qbs. Who’s your team? he wins!!

  94. steelersownyou says: Dec 10, 2011 1:04 PM

No excuses at all. We will beat 49ers with charlie batch at QB. No doubt. Ive watched 49ers play 4 games this year, quite frankly I don’t see how they can beat us… They are like the Bengals they look good against mediocre teams but good teams like ravens & steelers will make them look silly!

    niners. We’ll see who wins.
If in your heart you truly believe he’s the best you don’t need to say he’s one of the top 4. If don’t believe that then you’d be open for a trade. I don’t think anyone will not trade Ben for rodgers or brees (other than steelers fans)

  96. steelersownyou says: Dec 10, 2011 4:41 PM

@bobhk…..Nobody who knows the steelers offense would ever trade ben for… Rodgers, brees, manning, or brady! None of those QB’S would ever last 1 game behind our offensive line. Plus can you imagine brees & manning who are dome quarterbacks playing in the cold weather? And rodgers & brady dont have the big body to endure all the sacks that ben takes..they’d be out at least half a year every year..and lastly last I checked ben has been to 3 super bowls. Brees & Rodgers 1…your argument is invalid and you sir have been OWNED!

  97. stealkurtain says: Dec 10, 2011 11:35 PM

I don’t mind reading about Rodgers but don’t put Brees in the same category. He lost to the rams with a back to the back. A leader would never allow that. So enough about Brees.

It must really suck in San Fran when the visiting team has more fans in your stadium than the home team, as there will be when the Steelers come to town! Pittsburgh was playing on 3 days rest and still won. (admittedly it was an ugly game)

So all of you trannies fix your hair and makeup, put on some Black and Gold nail polish and come watch a winning franchise show you how the game is played. It’s never to late to come out of the closet and support a successful team! As if the 49ers scare anyone…I have to laugh.

so sad all this knockin’ on Ben. He’s an amazing athlete who may or may not have made a mistake – but like the rest of us he is human!! If my sons grow up to be rapists, Im gonna take a look at myself, not my quarterback.

  100. dmobey says: Dec 12, 2011 9:50 PM

    Made a mistake?

Creeping up your speed and getting a ticket is a mistake.

Forgetting to stop and get milk on the way home is a mistake.

Not remembering you owe your buddy lunch is a mistake.

    Rape is not a mistake.
