Patriots continue to churn bottom of roster

New England Patriots v Chicago Bears Getty Images

Bill Belichick continues to search for a defense he can trust.

The team made a handful of moves on Saturday, once again shaking up the bottom of their roster.  The team placed defensive lineman Jermaine Cunningham on injured reserve and signed Eric Moore. The team also waived safety Sterling Moore and promoted safety Malcolm Williams from the practice squad.

Cunningham, a second round pick a year ago, was viewed as a potential breakout player this year after a decent rookie season. He barely made an impact. Eric Moore finished last year in New England and last played in the UFL.

Sterling Moore came off the practice squad and wound up starting three games. It wouldn’t surprise us if Williams, a seventh-round pick this year, also started for the team before the season is through.

Jermaine Cunningham has been a major disappointment.

Bengals fans and Saints fans aren’t the only ones who can rock a ‘Who they’ chant.

Except for us Pats fans it’s more like ‘Who the hell is that?’

What’s next, dress fans out of the stands pre-game and start them on defense?

My how the patriots have fallen! They are a mess! You beat my steelers for years! Now it’s our turn to return the favor! Kharma is awesome!

    Mr. Rosenthal:

This is nothing new. Belichick does this every year with the “bottom of his roster”. He picked this tactic up from Parcells who used it as a way to keep any players from getting complacent. He wanted his players on edge and this was one way of doing that.

Belichick also does this to evaluate every person on the roster, no matter where on the depth chart they might be. Finally, he fine tunes his roster, depending on the particular challanges that are posed by this week’s opponent (yes, even at the “bottom of the roster”). As a result, players are routinely waived and signed as the needs for the upcoming game come into focus.

While WRs apparently need months or even years to learn the intricacies of the offense, the Patriots seem to prefer DBs with no experience in their system. It might be that the players become worse after a month or two of coaching from Matt Patricia…

May as well. I’ll be first in line to put on a uniform and then suffer a concussion from a nasty hit. Then I’ll complain to Peter King how vicious the sport can be.

    Go Pats!

    .

Belichick has officially lost his mind signing a defensive back to play in the secondary. Apparently we’ve run out of wide receivers.

How the Patriots have fallen??? Are you serious? They are 9-3, and Belichick seems to so this every year, with the bottom 3-5 players on his 53 man roster. You make it sound like he is shuffling Brady on and off the roster.

Eric Moore should have made the team coming out of camp.

The release of Sterling Moore probably means that Chung is healthy again.

Malcolm Williams probably elevated for his special teams play. That’s why he was drafted in the first place.

Ummm, Pats are 9-3 and could clinch the division this weekend. Also, the Pats were a mess in 2004 when they beat the Steelers in the AFC Championship game with an aging WR playing DB, so… I wouldn’t quite count your chickens yet.

    A) You’re a troll. You seem to always be throwing rocks.
    B) You’re right…The Pats beat “your” Steelers for years. Knocked them out of AFC Championship games and probably prevented them from winning Superbowls in those years……:-) :-) :-)
    C) The Pats are 9-3 and likely will finish either 13-3 or 12-4. They may be the top seed in the AFC when the play-offs start. Not so sure they’ve fallen too far and it really doesn’t seem as if they’re “a mess”.
    D) You’re still a troll.

LOL Ain’t that the truth??? I can’t remember another year they were down to their 4th string C on top of everything else . I’ll be watching the game yelling Yay #23 (who was Bodden at the beginning of the year)… (glances on internet for roster)…oh yeah…Nate Jones…nice tackle!

It’s incredibly hard to believe that they are 12th in points allowed. They’re hard to watch at times because of all the yards they give up…but minus last week’s 4th Q they usually get the needed stops in the RZ.

im being a homer and also don’t want to see cunningham written off after just two seasons, especially since he was decent as a rookie, but it should be noted that the pats did go out and make it a point to sign not 1, not 2, but 3 new DE’s for the roster this season. obviously it’d have been nice to see cunningham out perform them in camp, but carter, anderson, and ellis were all signed for a reason. cunningham just not a fit at OLB in a 3-4 and is behind 3 players at DE in a 4-3

  22. cincybert says: Dec 10, 2011 8:30 PM

OchoCinco better be worried. If Belichick is turning over the bottom of the roster, it won’t be long before he gets to Eight-Five.

Haha ya being called a troll really hurts! Be a lil more original when you step to the plate! Yes you will finish about 12-4, I would guess. Problem isn’t the regular season. It will be facing the top teams in the playoffs with that defense. If you don’t have a good defense by this point in the season you’re not going to. If you have to go on the road youre smoked. That defense isnt portable. I mean I understand having tom brady and all, but go man to man and stop them dinky dunks if you have secondary to do it. Like steelers… its back to fishing early on the belicheat boat!

  25. petersonhandshake says: Dec 10, 2011 9:24 PM

This makes me want to root for the Pats in the AFC. We all know their offense is capable, but I hope their defense gets put in a big spot and watch some of these no names make some big plays just because of the underdog factor.

i’m going to the game tomorrow and I’ll be buying a program, which I don’t normally do, so I can figure out who some of the guys playing defense for the Pats are.

  28. micronin127 says: Dec 10, 2011 10:37 PM

Don’t buy a program, they were printed a while ago and are likely out of date. You can print the roster from http://www.patriots.com and tape to half of a manila folder so that it is a rigid card. Name, number, height, weight, age, and school attended (when in doubt, probably Rutgers).

My only concern is that eventually some of the players like Spikes and Chung get healthy and roughly the same 11 guys start in two consecutive weeks.

It would give me the feeling that they were building on something and progressing.

  29. infectorman says: Dec 10, 2011 10:44 PM

    @steelersownyou:

former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson claimed, “This is exactly how I was told to do it 18 years ago by a Kansas City Chiefs scout. I tried it, but I didn’t think it helped us.” Johnson also said, “Bill Belichick was wrong because he videotaped signals after a memo was sent out to all of the teams saying not to do it. But what irritates me is hearing some reactions from players and coaches. These players don’t know what their coaches are doing. And some of the coaches have selective amnesia because I know for a fact there were various teams doing this. That’s why the memo was sent to everybody. That doesn’t make [Belichick] right, but a lot of teams are doing this.”[24]

All Patriots fans should go to their website to register for this once in a lifetime chance to win tickets to Gillette Stadium to play safety for a game.

@steelerownyou and all the other naive imbeciles that believe NE was the only team taping signals:
Number One Bozo, that means you!
    ***************************************

“In the press conference, Specter also noted that Walsh, while taping signals during a game against the Jets, stood next to a Jets videographer who, to Walsh, also appeared to be taping signals. Walsh later elaborated, saying the Jets cameraman was angling his camera towards the Patriots sidelines, and that Walsh did not question him about his activity because Walsh knew he himself was doing the same thing.”

The TRUTH eliminates all of the Belichick Haters positions.
But then again, who ever let the truth stop them from HATING?

I hope the Raiders add Sterling Moore to their roster again. He showed great potential in what little time he was there, before being cut and picked up by the Pats. I could see him being a great player in time, a diamond in the rough type thing, much like Nnamdi was.

Sugarcoat? Not sure where you dreamed that one up. Facts are facts: the facts you mentnioned are true; BUT also the facts I mentioned are true as well.

It is in black and white from Senator Spectre: The ONE man hell-bent on burning the Patriots asses- he admits that the Jets were doing the EXACT SAME THING.

Just because the Steelers never got caught taping doesn’t mean they weren’t doing it as well.

Hell, everyone knows they were all roided up in the 70′s, you dont see us draggin that out every other week do ya?

Shortsided, naive, myopic viewpoint you have there, son.
