Shanahan: Redskins “embarrassed” by failing to tackle Gronkowski

San Francisco 49ers v Washington Redskins Getty Images

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski looked like a man playing against boys on Sunday against the Redskins, catching six passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns and brushing off tackles with ease. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan says no one in the locker room felt good about that.

In particular, Shanahan singled out Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall for standing there and watching while two of his teammates failed to bring Gronkowski down. Shanahan said today that Hall felt badly about that.

I know he was embarrassed by it as was our whole football team,” Shanahan said, via Ryan O’Halloran of CSNWashington.com.

The Redskins should be embarrassed by that showing. On a day when they played a surprisingly competitive game with the Patriots, the secondary’s refusal to compete when Gronkowski had the ball may have been the difference between winning and losing.

    DeAngelo made the right decision.

  2. edmazeing1 says: Dec 12, 2011 6:32 PM

Why is D Hall still with the Team? I thought he missed a key tackle in that Dallas weeks ago!!!

  3. earthtopft says: Dec 12, 2011 6:35 PM

Shanahan thought it was bad enough that his players couldn’t bring the Pats TE down, but when they put their arms around each other and started chanting “Gronk! Gronk! Gronk!” after he scored, that was too much.

How can u single out dhall for that play he like myself thought he stepped out of bounds, Gronkowski dogged linebackers and safties all game

  5. jordan013091 says: Dec 12, 2011 6:36 PM

It’s Gronk’s world. We are all just living in it.

  6. descendency says: Dec 12, 2011 6:37 PM

DeAngelo Hall just asked himself “What would Deion Do?”

  7. irishnativeson says: Dec 12, 2011 6:38 PM

I’m no particular fan of Gronkowski’s but the game he had has got to be a top ten all time for TE’s

Some team find a way to lose.

  9. mistrezzrachael says: Dec 12, 2011 6:42 PM

Gronkowski just might be only unstoppable player in league..noone can bring him down, never mind cover him.

  10. backindasaddle says: Dec 12, 2011 6:49 PM

DeAngelo Hall made a bad decision. There’s a big surprise.

  11. cletusvandam says: Dec 12, 2011 6:54 PM

Wait, they were TRYING to stop him? I thought Shanahan had Gronkowski in Fantasy football or something

  12. JackLeone says: Dec 12, 2011 7:18 PM

Shanny needs to be fired too. He hasn’t done anything since he’s been in DC. How much longer will he have??

  13. liquidalfa says: Dec 12, 2011 7:30 PM

DeAngelo Hall is like McNabb and Haynesworth. The record may not show it but they’ll be better off when he’s gone.

  14. predicatepanda says: Dec 12, 2011 7:37 PM

No worries DeAngelo. As long as you’re ‘still swagged out and consider yourself one of the best in the game’ you’ll be fine.

Remember, it’s not a lie if you believe it.

  15. blackqbwhiterb says: Dec 12, 2011 7:44 PM

As I watch each week, I’m not even excited anymore in the 4th qtr. I am simply waiting for the skins to blow it. They live up to expectations each week

  16. adantsa says: Dec 12, 2011 7:45 PM

Gronkowski is the definition of “a beast.”

  17. pastabelly says: Dec 12, 2011 7:48 PM

While he’s at it, Shanahan should call out the Redskins fans. 1/2 of them sold or gave tickets to Patriots fans, 1/4 didn’t show up, and the other quarter sat on their hands. That place sounded like Gillette Stadium. Nice operation you got there Mr. Snyder.

  18. PFTiswhatitis says: Dec 12, 2011 8:25 PM

Gronk is a beast. Hall made the right choice.

  19. ryansbuckner says: Dec 12, 2011 8:34 PM

Let’s be honest. When 2 of your teammates are leaning their hardest against 1 man, especially on the sideline, you EXPECT he’s going down.

They failed to show DHall sprint after Gronk once he broke those tackles.

  20. detruthhurts says: Dec 12, 2011 8:36 PM

Hall made a career discision. How much longer that career lasts is anybody’s guess!

  21. earthtopft says: Dec 12, 2011 9:05 PM

Afterwards D’Angelo was photographed wearing Gronkowki’s jersey while Rob stood barechested and smiling in the background.

  22. earthtopft says: Dec 12, 2011 9:07 PM

@ryansbuckner – Which way was DHall sprinting after he saw Gronkowski break free?

  23. goldsteel says: Dec 12, 2011 9:10 PM

That was some pathetic tackling for sure. But since their playing Goodell ball should they try to tackle? Will they be fined? Suspended? Goodell is poisoning the game.

  24. quadya says: Dec 12, 2011 9:19 PM

    Why??

Nobody else has done it all year

  25. rcali says: Dec 12, 2011 9:40 PM

    “Tacklin’?, You talkn’ about tacklin?”

  26. towniesman says: Dec 12, 2011 9:41 PM

All you people that live outside of the New England region consider yourselves “Gronked”

  27. fantom21 says: Dec 12, 2011 9:45 PM

I don’t understand why DeAngelo Hall is so scrutinized by the media as well as the general football viewing audience. Redskins fans are right to be disappointed, but no Redskin fan is booing Hall out of D.C. Believe it or not Hall is actually a leader on this team, and a good one at that. Go redskins!!

  28. golonger says: Dec 12, 2011 9:46 PM

This is status quo for Hall…..a prima donna who does nothing for any of the teams he has ever played for……the fact that he is still in the league is the real embarrassment….along with his pathetic attitude.

  29. thereisalwaysnextyear says: Dec 12, 2011 9:51 PM

Is this a joke? Hall doesn’t tackle(as a rule). He tries to strip people and let others do the hard work. Not to say he never makes a hit, but I’ve seen him allow touchdowns before because all he cared about was the strip and the highlight. Let’s not forget that this idiot picked up an officials flag and tossed it adding a 15 yard penalty to his 5 yard holding penalty(which was really a mugging). Hall made the pro-bowl while allowing the MOST yards of any starting corner. How the heck does that happen? Highlight plays. Not steady play.

  30. tothefellowshipofthemiserable says: Dec 12, 2011 10:17 PM

Gronk man is a tough guy to bring down, especially now that proper tackling is a lost art in the NFL

  31. richm2256 says: Dec 12, 2011 10:18 PM

I can’t believe Hall watched those two ‘Skins trying to take Gronk down, obviously having trouble, and just standing there three feet away.

All he had to do was hit them and he’s out of bounds.

    Ridiculous.

Dude, how can you be a fan of football PERIOD and NOT like this guy?????

  32. terrellochouno says: Dec 12, 2011 10:19 PM

Not tackling Gronkowski shouldn’t be a sore spot for Deangelo Hall. His mighty struggles to tackle Wes Welker, one of the smallest WR’s in the league, should be.

  33. theandy59 says: Dec 12, 2011 10:20 PM

It looked a little like Assante Samuel jogging leisurely toward Rodney Harrison and David Tyree with the ball perched against Tyree’s helmet. When the play is live and you have a chance to deliver a blow, YOU MUST TAKE IT!!!!

  34. sschmiggles says: Dec 12, 2011 10:40 PM

Not like the Skins are the first team he’s done that to.

  35. ramjam28 says: Dec 12, 2011 11:02 PM

He showed the world how he gets out of bed every morning, he rolls over gets up and runs with women draped on him and just when they think they got him held down, he breaks free and keeps running. Gronko is clearly a pimp, GO PATS!!!!

  36. commonsensedude says: Dec 12, 2011 11:18 PM

Come on, people! If DeAngelo had gotten involved, he might have gotten his uniform dirty – which would have completely ruined the vibe for any sideline interviews he would get involved in after the game. Plus, if he had managed to make an interception later in the game, he would look a lot less sharp in those SportsCenter clips. Think, folks!

Note to Denver this weekend — tackle Gronkowski.

  41. blackqbwhiterb says: Dec 13, 2011 9:17 AM

Typical Hall/Haynesworth/McNabb type poisoning of the franchise. He’s an idiot and an egomaniac. Rogers was the best corner in DC, they should have kept him and dumped this clown with his big mouth and poor play. Hopefully this offseason they continue to clean out the crap from this locker room and build through the draft, but Hall will be here at least another year. This year they need a QB and a RT, and hopefully they get another tackle and guard as well. Then they can get DB’s because every one they have is sub standard.

Especially when HE was the one whose screw up put Rodney in that position to start with. Sigh.

I’m no fan of D Hall, but in that case I DO think he thought his two teammates had Gronk out of bounds. I believe Shanahan challenged and the refs looked at that play to determine that.
And yes, Hall did race after Gronk after he saw him continue.

I’m also no fan of a coach EVER singling out a player by name after a game. Shanny does this all the time. It’s bush league IMO, and it’s a big reason guys hate playing for coaches.

    skins23…

    Where are you?!

Defend your boy and your screen name.

Nope – wont happen. Because he is as SOFT as Hall is.

He wont bother to show his face after the Giants proved him wrong, AGAIN.

Wait til this Sunday. You should probably just cancel your login from this site, cause Im never going to let you live it down..

    Skins23 = softer than Roseann’s son!
