Cowboys put Murray on injured reserve, sign Morris

The Cowboys have a big problem at running back.  As expected, DeMarco Murray has landed on injured reserve after a broken and sprained ankle suffered Sunday night against the Giants.

Also as expected, the Cowboys have signed veteran Sammy Morris to take Murray’s place.  Morris joins Felix Jones as the only tailbacks on the team.

Morris entered the league in 2000.  Cut by the Patriots in September, Morris has been out of the league this season.

It’s unknown — for now — whether other running backs visited with or worked out for the Cowboys on Tuesday.  The decision to sign the 34-year-old Morris off the street suggests that guys like Larry Johnson, Clinton Portis, and/or Tiki Barber should have at least merited some consideration.

The Cowboys also placed safety Barry Church on IR.  He’ll be replaced on the active roster by safety Mana Silva.

Morris may be old, but he has had relatively few touches compared to other backs his age, has special teams value, and runs hard. I can’t say that for Portis, Johnson, or Barber.

Why the Cowboys had only two running backs going into that game is beyond me. What would they have done if Jones went down too?

You do realize that even NBC canned Tiki a while back — so you no longer have to keep flogging him?

They had Phillip Tanner on the practice squad who I really liked, but they put him on IR right before the game. I think they should’ve signed Lonyae Miller (who was with the Cowboys in preseason) from Oakland’s practice squad.

I think this lack of rb depth will kill the Cowboy’s playoff run. Oh wait…..Rob Ryan’s D already did that.

Hell, put Sammy back in the secondary, too. There’s no way he can be any worse than Terence Newman.

All of the above also would have “came off the street”. Hey, at least you tried to hide the Tiki crap this time.
