Cowboys place Jon Kitna on injured reserve

Should something happen to Tony Romo in the next couple of weeks, the Cowboys will be fighting for their playoff lives with Stephen McGee under center.

The team placed veteran backup quarterback Jon Kitna on injured reserve Wednesday with a back injury that has hampered him for most of the season. He has been inactive for the last four weeks and the team obviously felt that there was no reason to hold a roster spot for Kitna. Wide receiver Dwayne Harris will take Kitna’s place on the active roster and they signed quarterback Chris Griesen to the practice squad.

It wouldn’t be surprising if this is the end of the road for Kitna. He thought about retiring before this season and, at 39 with a back injury, that figures to be an appealing option again in the coming offseason. Kitna has thrown for 29,475 yards in his career, good for 37th in NFL history.

I’ve been wanting to see what McGee can do. Preferably next preseason, though. He’s at least on Matt Moore’s level.

“McGee” sounds ominous. Like “Fake QB McGee”

Kitna really threw for almost 30K yards? He was always good for a 6-7 game stretch then he faded faster than the Giants in Dec or Romo in the playoffs. Always seemed to be a class act. Wish him well.

Kitna was a stand-up guy his whole career. Best wishes John

Things sure don’t look good for the Cowboys right now. Even if they find a way to make the playoffs, I can’t see them lasting long. Without an experienced backup, they are in thin ice if Romo goes down.

Romo has a lifetime 96.4 QB rating ! Little Hands Kitna fumbled 110 times and lost 45 of those, not to mention his 165 INTs! So, yes, I have seen Romo play.

    weird dude. So long, Kit

Solid QB. Sort of like Billy Volek in that he produced when he had the shot but was content being a backup.

    @stoneydog1000

Really? So you’ve seen the constant choking and stupid decisions? How does that factor into that 96.4 QB rating?

At least is AARP kicks in soon.

Kitna is a really good guy and did possess mental attributes as a QB that his teammates gravitated toward. He’s to be commended for carving out such a lengthy NFL career coming out of Central Washington University. Not too worried about McGee as the backup-he isn’t spectacular, but he can ball.

It’s too bad that Kitna never had the opportunity to be the starter on a contending team during his career. He did alot given the situations with which he was presented.

It’s reflected in the interceptions and incompletions part, just like every other QB.

Kitna was a hell of a backup and really surprising he never did anything big once he got into the nfl. I mean the guy wasn’t even drafted and the first year in european football he took the Barcelona Dragons to the 1997 World Bowl Championship (World Bowl V) and Kitna was named the World’s Most Valuable Player in that game.
I always liked the guy, wish him well in whatever he does after the nfl.

Kitna also has 169 tds so at least he has more td’s the ints.
