Jay Ratliff has to be separated from Cowboys beat writer

Cowboys defensive tackle Jay Ratliff had to be separated from ESPNDallas.com writer Calvin Watkins on Thursday when Ratliff didn’t appreciate the line of questioning.

Watkins is a well-respected writer, who has worked at the two major papers in town. He reportedly asked Ratliff about former teammate Sam Hurd’s arrest for drug trafficking and the conversation “quickly went South” according to Mac Engel of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

NFL Network had footage of the argument, and the two men are lucky there were others there to keep them apart. The incident didn’t come as a total surprise to those who know Ratliff, who has apparently had a testy relationship with the media and has a moody personality.

Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan was standing nearby and broke it down: “My money’s on Ratliff.”

  1. In related news, Rex Ryan had to be separated from the imaginary Super Bowl trophies he thinks he won the past two seasons.

  2. Media members will always back their own as “objective” and “innocent” while ignoring the ridiculous nature of sports media today.

  3. Is it me or is Rob Ryan a terrible defensive coordinator? Rex might yap non-stop, but his defenses are always good. Rob keeps getting all these chances and he is terrible at each stop. Now he has players attacking beat writers and he just stands there making a joke!

  4. Awesome neutrality, Rosenthal.

    Good job coach, good discipline.

My money is on the Giants. Cowboys own no tiebreakers. See next year and your awesome defense Ryan.

  6. “…the conversation ‘quickly went South.’”

Must have been a heck of a chat to transport them to a culturally distinct geographic region, y’all.

  7. Maybe Ratliff’s just mad because his supplier just got busted and he’s worried about the names that will appear on the list of Hurd’s customers.

  8. Writer Will McDonough did knock Raymond Clayborn into a laundy basket, but Clayborn was a DB.

“After the game, Clayborn was snapping at writers and bumping into them on purpose. Legendary writer Will McDonough of The Boston Globe took exception, saying “”Hey, Ray, there’s no need to do that.”

Clayborn reacted by jabbing his finger in McDonough’s face, poking him in the eye. McDonough then punched him twice, knocking him into a laundry cart and taking down a number of people with him.”

  9. 1. Ratliff was just trying to get bacon!! Kudos for not being slack and letting his game go after a big loss Sunday night!

    2. In a time of the season when bus-tossing by coaches of coaches, coaches of players, players of coaches, it’s nice to see Ryan backing his guy and keeping confidence in him…even putting money down.

  10. Ratlife is wondering what the point of a “beat writer” is, if you can’t take your frustrations out on them.

  11. Well, there’s one name we can probably scratch off. Only 9 more to go to hit the minimum of “double digits”.

  12. Once upon a time our sports writers went out to get the stories. Sadly, today’s writers seem to want to find a way to be part of the story.

And I must love how you media folks look out for each other until you’re ready to turn on each other.

Remind me again, why did he ask him a question about someone else personal life? Even worst, the guy who got in trouble isn’t even part of the team anymore. What was that reporter insinuating?

  13. My question is well respected by whom?? Watkins is the same jerk that told Wade Phillips he could do a better job coaching that Wade could. He’s not out to report the news. He’s out to create it. Which is a job prerequisite of working for ESPN.

  14. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan was standing nearby and broke it down: “My money’s on Ratliff.”
It what you get from RAYN.
The Cowgirls no good form the top down to the bottom what a team and some say it America Team no way is America like this team.

  15. Fat Rob’s prediction on a Ratliff / Watkins dust up is probably about as solid as his 4th quarter defensive schemes.

  16. You guys are speculative idiots. He may have been friends with Sam Hurd and possibly couldn’t be involved with drugs whatsoever. If you’ve read elsewhere, you’ll see that Calvin Watkins was way out of line with his questioning and prodding.

  17. Guess we now know one of the names that will appear on that list…….

And my money is on Rob Ryan…. for coach who most looks like a homless man.

  18. Jay Low Ratlife was probably Hurd’s muscle when he was dealing in Dallas. With Destitute Dez as their prime client.

  19. Leave it to Ryan to miss the point completely and make a stupid neanderthal like comment. The Cowboys have a defensive coordinator who talks too much, eats too much, and coaches too little.

  20. “When he is in the right mood, Jay can be charming, funny, bright and very well-spoken. When he’s not in the right mood, forget it. There can be level of aggression that this guy projects that is exceptionally uncomfortable for just about any environment other than a football field.”

Good thing that doesn’t sound like the symptoms of drug abuse or anything like that.

But only because Todd Haley is out of coaching now.

  22. Surely I don’t want to get in the way of a good Cowboy hate rant, but….for those of you who missed it…Hurd doesn’t play for the Cowboys. If he’s supplying for anyone, wouldn’t it be ‘Da Bears?

  23. “Watkins is a well-respected writer, who has worked at the two major papers in town”

So was Skip Bayless. Watkins’ problem is that he’s a self-admitted Giants fan that lets his bias get the best of him.

  24. “The Cowgirls no good form the top down to the bottom what a team and some say it America Team no way is America like this team.”

You got that right. The guy running the country is an unqualified idiot.

  25. I wish Jay would have gone after tip toe bandit(Brandon Jacobs) after he did his disrespectful dance after scoring, the way he went after a the reporter…..#priorities

  26. I’ve met jay Ratliff personally…..there really couldn’t be a nicer guy..and rob Ryan grows his hair out to donate it to a cancer foundation…it’s amazing how many classless and ignorant people are in this country

  27. For some reason Gregg decided to omit this paragraph from the original article he’s paraphrasing:

“Per some information from some more people who were there, apparently Calvin was really pushing on this one when Jay told him to ‘walk away.’ Calvin did not, and that’s when the fun started.”

He probably bought drugs off him and is really worried. A lot of Cowboys should be because I hear they were his biggest customers.

Oh, you hear Cowboys were his biggest customers? Really? Do you have access to these Federal Reports?

I smell roid rage, cmon league start testing these clowns.

    ———————————————–
The league already tests these professional athletes for steroids. And just because an athlete loses his temper, it doesn’t mean he’s munching on steroids. Ratliff’s actually a little on the small side for his position–not exactly the picture of a steroid user. The reports say the ESPN guy was in his face and refused to back off when Ratliff asked him to walk away. Sometimes reporters deliberately provoke players just to get a story.

must have hit home with the drug comment. why don’t they all just go back to the hood all sell drugs.

Who is “they all”? How do you know Ratliff is from the ‘hood? Do you know anything about him or the situation … other than his skin color?

  30. it cracks me up how the trolls come out of the wood work with just one little post from this site. Im not even a Cowboys fan but I feel badly for them and their fans. Most of the trolls came out to bash Ratliff, Ryan and the cowboys.

I appreciated the smarter posters who bashed the “Neutrality” of this article. If I were an NFL player and was MANDATED by the league to have to talk to the media, every comment would be “No Comment” and if the league said I couldnt say that, then I’d just repeat the questions back to the reporter and ask them what they thought.

The media is looking for one thing and one thing only. A story, and if that means getting under the skin of some “moody” player they will do it. Just look at how these stories are written on here. They arent neutral, they are worded to get the most comments. I understand the medias job, but dont think we are al stupid sheep. We know what you are doing.

  31. This is very non-objective. When has Ratliff had a testy relationship with reporters? The Dallas media is always baiting the players. What else is new? Why do they even agree to interview with them? They should leave it for the coaches.

  32. I can only imagine the outrage if Suh had to be separated from a reporter and then Schwartz or Cunningham made a smart a** remark like “I put my money on Suh.” There’d be calls for Suh and the entire Lions’ coaching staff to be suspended for the rest of season. Some would argue Schwartz should be charged with aiding and abetting an assault. If the Lions didn’t immediately issue a statement signed by William Clay Ford and each of his heirs strongly condemning such an unprovoked act of violence that would lead to the singular conclusion that the Lions sanctioned such conduct.

  33. That’s my wide receiver, don’t talk my former wide receiver… It’s not fair. It’s not fair.

On a side note, did Hurd get caught because some family member left a crack pipe in his glove compartment?

  34. Greg, this is my favorite piece of your article.

“NFL Network had footage of the argument, and the two men are lucky there were others there to keep them apart. ”

I think the reporter is lucky others were there to keep Ratliff from beating the crap out of him.
