Steve Smith: Tebow doesn’t compare to Newton

Atlanta Falcons v Carolina Panthers Getty Images

Tim Tebow is on a roll, but he’s no Cam Newton according to Panthers receiver Steve Smith.

“You can’t compare Cam to Tebow. I think Cam’s a more complete player,” Smith said via Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer.

“Tebow has the wins. But everybody wants to crown Tebow. Yes, he has the will to win. I think Tebow is no different than any other professional. But Tebow has a great opportunity to play behind a great defense.”

Florio might disagree, but I find it hard to argue with Smith. It doesn’t detract from Tebow to say that Newton is a far more advanced in his development as a quarterback right now than Tebow. Smith sums it up like a personnel evaluator would.

“Versatile would mean you can throw the ball very accurately, run the ball, create things,” Smith said. “And the only thing [Tebow’s] creating is running,” Smith said. “He isn’t very accurate. You watch him, I don’t think 3-for-10 (after) three quarters is a versatile quarterback.”

Tebow was 3-for-16, but he has consistently created through the air during the fourth quarter of games. It’s straightening out the first three quarters that will be Tebow’s next step.
Smith’s words will inspire a lot of people to point towards Tebow’s record as a starter. But winning and losing in the NFL isn’t that simple. By that logic, John Skelton is a vastly superior quarterback this year to Philip Rivers and Michael Vick.
By that logic, Tebow is a vastly super quarterback to, say, Aaron Rodgers in his first season as a starter. Smith’s comments may rankle some Tebowmaniacs, but he’s only saying something all 32 general managers in the league would agree with.
Perhaps Tebow and Newton will be a closer comparison someday, but that day hasn’t arrived yet.

How about Steve Smith just shut the hell up and go back to fighting teammates in practice.

Steve Smith is right, can’t argue that fact.

First the farce of an article by MDS, now this? I understand Carolina doesn’t have the D Timmy does but I think this quote by Broncos OC Mike McCoy says it all:

“I don’t care how you get it done, the objective is to win. We’ve thrown here plenty of times for 400 yards and lost games. What does that do? He might not be putting up big passing numbers, but he’s the guy pulling the trigger and leading us to victories. That’s the No. 1 thing that matters.”

Timmy is 7-1, Cam is 4-9. Potential doesn’t trump Ws people.

    I agree Smith!!!

I am one of the biggest Tebow supporters out there… I love the kid’s will to win, but Smith is right… Cam Newton is a far superior player… Cam has the ability/size to be one of the best Quarterback’s this league has ever seen

  6. cbrady2k says: Dec 15, 2011 4:17 PM

Well I don’t think you can compare anyone to Jesus.

  7. jbpanthers says: Dec 15, 2011 4:17 PM

Smitty telling the truth as usual, Cam doesn’t have a defense and Tebow does.

  8. flapjackdaddy says: Dec 15, 2011 4:18 PM

If you compare Newton to Tebow than you haven’t watched any Panthers games this season.

  9. oriolesvsravens says: Dec 15, 2011 4:19 PM

Newton makes plays that Teebow probably could not. And Teebow does not make the bad decisions Newton makes at times.

Doesn’t TJ Yates have a higher winning percentage in the NFL than Tim Tebow? Didn’t he just lead his team to a division title? Where are the hourly updates on Yates?

  11. rcali says: Dec 15, 2011 4:20 PM

Of course winning isn’t important. It’s all about having the QB that is supposed to be a pro bowl QB. Wins are just for show.

  12. nebster21 says: Dec 15, 2011 4:21 PM

You cannot compare them because Tebow has a winning record this year?

  13. juliusanonymous says: Dec 15, 2011 4:21 PM

Correction: Our personal lord and savior jesus christ is a better QB than Tim Tebow. Timmay* says it himself, every single time he gets the opportunity.

The only thing worse than hearing Timmay boo-hooing for Jesus every chance he gets is all the media lovefest for Tebow. Look, the guy has won a handful of games (thanks ONLY to God being a Broncos fan). Let’s wait until he actually puts together a few good seasons before crowning him the next messiah.

    * Yes, the South Park reference is on purpose. Is there honestly anything more retarded than a grown man crying on national TV for Jesus? Reminds me of those corrupt televangelists…

Tebow has a better passer rating, a better rushing average, and a much better won/loss record than Iconic Man. What else is there?

  18. eaglesnoles05 says: Dec 15, 2011 4:25 PM

You can compare them though: Cam is a better player than Tebow, in all facet’s of individual quarterback judging. He’s bigger, faster, stronger, younger, and a better quarterback. There’s the comparision.

  20. mightyleemoon says: Dec 15, 2011 4:25 PM

Newton also lacks some accuracy. When he misses, he misses horribly. He’s also had a number of picks dropped. He could easily have well over 20. Both would be extremely pedestrian if defenders weren’t pulling a guy up to account for their mobility. That’s their game. Pure passing is not.

  21. arrogantathlete says: Dec 15, 2011 4:26 PM

  23. wetpaperbag3 says: Dec 15, 2011 4:27 PM

For the first time in my life, I totally agree with Steve Smith 100%!!!

Most of all the NFL players have the will to win. However, this is a TEAM sport. A guy can be gutsy, but lose games because his defense can’t keep the other team from scoring points. A guy can merely be a “game manager”, doing just enough to NOT lose a game, but can win superbowls (ala Trent Dilfer).

It’s becoming embarrassingly unfair to the rest of the Broncos team for the games being won while Tebow is under center. Except for the Minnesota game, the defense has bailed Tebow out 6-out-of-7 games this year and the field goal kicker has been money EVERY clutch time game tying or game winning field goal attempt. And the runningbacks have been probowl-esque in GASHING opposing defenses. The same can’t be said of Tebow’s passing stats and passing efficiency.

If the Broncos kicker, runningbacks, and defense played like Tebow for 3-1/2 quarters per game, the Broncos would be 0-7 with him as a starter.

  24. dionoil says: Dec 15, 2011 4:28 PM

  25. dalfanforever says: Dec 15, 2011 4:29 PM

Is Cam more talented? Sure. No question. Anyone can see that. But Tebow’s leading his TEAM and helping them win, which is much more than I can say for Cam’s Panthers.

  26. sterilizecromartie says: Dec 15, 2011 4:29 PM

Can we just let Tebow play? I mean, I’m a big fan of his, but even I get tired of having to see an article every time someone publically offers up an opinion about him…. good or bad.

Nothing against Steve Smith, but I really don’t care what he thinks of Tebow.

  27. earthtopft says: Dec 15, 2011 4:29 PM

The Large Newt being throwing to veteran Pro Bowlers like Smith, Shockey, and Greg Olson his whole career. Tebow has been throwing to a bunch of second year players who missed last season (D. Thomas, Decker, Willis) or rookies, (J. Thomas, Green) for the most part. Tim still has a better passer rating, this season, and for his career.

  28. chickenwangstaff says: Dec 15, 2011 4:29 PM

I’m a Broncos fan and I agree with everything except for “I think Tebow is no different than any other professional.”

Nothing could be further from the truth, as evidenced by the fact that Steve Smith was asked to comment on Tebow. Everything about Tim Tebow the person sets him apart from his peers, good and bad.

  33. vegaskid21 says: Dec 15, 2011 4:33 PM

Steve is right. You can’t compare. Tebow wins games.

  34. udub says: Dec 15, 2011 4:33 PM

What is Smith’s point? No one has been trying to compare the two. They are two different QBs in two different systems. Cam Newton has thrown the ball 450 times and when he isn’t throwing to a back probably 90% of them are bombs down the field hoping the WR will make a play.

Time Tebow will probably never throw close to 450 times even if he starts all 16 games of a season.

  35. cowboysallday says: Dec 15, 2011 4:33 PM

    It’s true

  36. whyalwaysthehate says: Dec 15, 2011 4:33 PM

The good news is that together they will give us some great games ahead. There is a nice new crop of QBs now in the league, with a couple more coming that will define the NFL. I hope Bradford is among them. We’ve had a tough stretch with a small group Hall of Famers carying the load foe years. We need both of them and more like them.

  37. earthtopft says: Dec 15, 2011 4:34 PM

For everyone trashing Tebow for religion, Newt pops off the same jargon all the time. He just doesn’t live up to his talk the way Tebow does.

  38. wesvr says: Dec 15, 2011 4:35 PM

The ‘wins’ logic is so flawed. the BRONCOS are 8-5 and the PANTHERS are 4-9. Its not one on one every week. The facts are that Tebow’s defense keeps him in every single game. Why do you think Tebow can suck for 3 quarters and come through in the 4th? Hes not coming back down 20 points. The Panthers defense is at or near last in just about every single category. These are facts, and no matter how you spin it, you can’t win games alone.

I wouldnt call that a “Great Defense”

  46. comeonnowguys says: Dec 15, 2011 4:47 PM

It doesn’t really matter. Tebowmaniacs are ready to annoint him the Best QB of All Time.

They’re winning right now and “it’s all because of Tebow.”

If they don’t win, it will because “the defense only held them to 14 points” or the kicker couldn’t hit a “simple 70 yard field goal.”

  47. 6kings says: Dec 15, 2011 4:47 PM

No different than any other professional??? Ha.

Smith is a greatly motivated person, like Tebow, but Tebow ouclasses Smith (and Vick, etc, etc, etc) in so many ways.

  48. exhelodrvr says: Dec 15, 2011 4:48 PM

At this point there is not enough history to compare them (or to compare Tebow and Rodgers, etc.)

Newton makes more big plays, but also more big mistakes than Tebow.

How do they compare from a leadership perspective, though? That would seem to favor Tebow, but again, it’s too soon to tell.

  49. mj5150 says: Dec 15, 2011 4:49 PM

  50. yelix says: Dec 15, 2011 4:49 PM

If Cam had a defense that kept teams from scoring more than 10 points in 3 and a half quarters and a kicker that could reliably make everything from close to midfield, the Panthers would be one of the top teams in the NFC. There’s no denying that Cam Newton is, in every aspect of the position, a more talented quarterback than Tim Tebow.

  51. mecheng04 says: Dec 15, 2011 4:50 PM

  57. savagenation2011 says: Dec 15, 2011 4:55 PM

  58. rushbacker says: Dec 15, 2011 4:56 PM

I love how both Smith and the author of the article fail to point out one fairly relevant stat. Tim has five turnovers on the year– Cam has EIGHTEEN. Gee, ya think it’s a little easier to play defense when your offense doesn’t constantly turn the ball over? I’m sure Tim could throw for more yards if he was constantly willing to throw into coverage. It’s also worth pointing out that Cam has an All-Pro caliber receiver and a quality pair of TEs, while Tim has a pair of second-year wideouts (who dropped at least five passes between them in the first three quarters against Chicago), and a bunch of rookies and warm bodies.

  59. qdog112 says: Dec 15, 2011 4:57 PM

    It’s not even fair.

  60. anonymous135 says: Dec 15, 2011 4:58 PM

Cam Newton IS vastly superior to Tim in every sense as a quarter back or runner – there shouldn’t even be a debate on it… as a rookier vs. Tim Tebow as a rookie or second year player or whatever. Period

    Difference here…

Tewbow does what he does inspiring and wills his team to greatness when they need it most. They’ve bought in to meet that expectation now on a weekly basis with win to win and obstacles to get over or around.

Cam hasn’t done that with his team at all, minus his recent shout out to the organization needing to get to where he thinks he is (which is pretty damn amazing)!

Who do you like to see and cheer for or against more than Tim Tewbow??!! :)

I love seeing Tebow when the team is being succesful and hi5’ing teamates, coaches and his spiritual beliefs up top…

I can’t stand that ‘superman’ ish crap celebration that these clowns peform. How utterly retarded these guys come across that perform this each time they score is beyond me why that’s as clever they can get… Sooooooooooo yearning for the good ol’ TO performances.

We all want to see if the Broncos can pull it off or not and come away in disbelief with a dash of amazement when they do – and we ALL love the 4th quarter pan shots of Elway looking like he is about to vomit every week!

  67. 20bust11 says: Dec 15, 2011 5:12 PM

Tebow doesn’t have any receivers to throw to, and Newton does. A few days before Tebow took the helm, Denver’s top receiver was traded for a seventh round draft pick. Thomas has caught some great passes, from Tebow, but has dropped more than he has caught. Has anyone counted the great passes Tebow has thrown, that were dropped? The media certainly doesn’t ever mention them. Tebow was ripped for only completing two passes, out of eight, in one game, but three perfect passes were dropped, in that game. More importantly, Tebow doesn’t handle the play calling. Did the Denver offensive coordinator really call eight passing plays, in a sixty minute game? I’d expect an explanation for that, but I’d probably have to ask John Elway that question. Cam Newton might be a great QB, in the future, but based on wins, Tim Tebow is a great QB. And really, aren’t wins the only thing that counts in the NFL? That’s all.

    ================================

Are you kidding me? (Another Teblow fan caught blind faith worshiping…again)

    Tebow’s passing yardage ranking: 32nd

But per your argument: Tebow has an 83.9 passer rating and Cam an 81.1 rating. However, if you actually LOOK at another statistic, you would realize that the passer rating difference is actually skewed.

Tebow has only thrown the ball 198 times and completed 98 of them. Completion rate of 48.5%.

Newton attempted 452 passes and completed 270 for a 59.7% completion rate. Can Newton COMPLETES a little over 30% MORE passes than Tebow ATTEMPTS!!!

    Nice try Tebowmaniac.

  69. mrplow3 says: Dec 15, 2011 5:17 PM

    He’s absolutely right.

Newton is on pace to match Tebow’s total number of win in about 3 seasons from now. Meanwhile, Tebow is on pace to match Newton’s interception total in about 6 seasons from now.

So ya, I’d say there is no comparisn whatsoever.

  70. tdrizzle74 says: Dec 15, 2011 5:18 PM

Carolina has led in 12/13 games. Yet they are 4-9. Their team defense is 25th, Denver’s is 19th, allowing 8yds less per game than Carolina. The better question for Steve Smith should be: “All things being pretty equal why is your team losing games with a more versatile quarterback?”

I think that your coach has the same concern.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/12/13/ron-rivera-is-running-out-of-patience/

If it makes you feel better your quarterback is better….but your teams ability to win games sucks.

Ps Rosenthal… There are 8 teams with losing records who have better Defenses than Denver, Michael Vick plays for one of the teams and Phillip Rivers plays for the other.

  74. playitfunky says: Dec 15, 2011 5:39 PM

He’s 100% correct. You can’t compare someone who turns ball over 18 times, loses more games then he wins, to someone like Tebow who is playing good football. Tebow doesn’t care about stats, only winning and serving the lord. Broncos defense was near last in the NFL with Orton turning ball over. It would be bad under Newton as well because he is an int machine. He’s on pace for 20 plus interception which is absolutely horrid. Also though Steve Smith would not be wanted on Denver. They are a team and Smith has always been a me type player, as evidenced by actually getting violent with his teammates.

  75. frankdatank23 says: Dec 15, 2011 5:39 PM

  76. playitfunky says: Dec 15, 2011 5:41 PM

Broncos defense isn’t even that good look at the stats. It wasn’t until Tebow left them in good field position, stopped turning ball over, that things turned around. If QBS would just learn that turnovers are what win in the NFL maybe they would not throw into double coverage so much.

  77. bossplayer213 says: Dec 15, 2011 5:46 PM

In the next 8 games they went 7-1.
    The only variable?
    Tim Tebow.
Newton will be arrested at least three times in his NFL career. Tebow will build three hospitals.

  90. titansrbeast says: Dec 15, 2011 6:12 PM

It’s pathetic how much publicity this dude gets. Denver’s D deserves all the credit in the world. Tebow, however, is a good player, just not as good as everyone is hyping him up to be. To disagree that Cam is on another level than Tebow is just being biased to Tebow imo. Cam is a far better passer and can still make it happen with his legs. If Cam had the defense that Tebow does, Carolina would be elite, because they’re offense actually knows how to put up points consistently.

  91. toad8572 says: Dec 15, 2011 6:14 PM

Before Tebow became a starter, the Bronco defense was bad. Without any changes, other than Tebow leading the team, they’ve become an excellent defense. Tebow may not have the throwing skills of other NFL QB’s, but he can lead like few others. A great leader makes everyone’s game elevate, as evidenced by the Bronco’s D. Like it or not, that intangible of leadership is the gas that’s driving the Bronco engine this season. Great leaders find a way to lead their teams to wins.

  92. cassiusclaymatthews says: Dec 15, 2011 6:16 PM

    ———————————————————-

I agree and disagree with you. If you look at Dan Marino, he has broken every passing record and it has taken tweaking of the rules for present QBs to even come close to his records yet I have seen sports writers not even rank him in the top ten of all time. His biggest hang up is that he never won a SB. So if that is the case winning does come into play at some point. I personally would prefer Newton but at the same time I know its like comparing Picasso to Micheal Angelo. Two different artist with two different styles.

Question: What are the rankings of the defense and rushing for both teams and the rushing-to-passing ratio?

  96. savagenation2011 says: Dec 15, 2011 6:20 PM

    …….Statististics are for losers.

    Tebow all day

  97. raideralex99 says: Dec 15, 2011 6:20 PM

The fact that Smith is talking about Tebow proves Tebow is doing a better job at qb than Cam. I don’t hear the Broncos players or any other team talking about Newton.

  98. earthtopft says: Dec 15, 2011 6:24 PM

@wetpaperbag – Cut yourself some eye holes. Obviously Newton has thrown a lot more passes than Tebow, he has started 5 more games this year. That is why they use passer rating as the overall check of efficiency. It removes all the other variables. Tebow has a higher rating this year, and had a higher rating last year when he was a rookie in the league like Iconic Man is today. Tim also gets more yards per rush when he carries the ball. Even if you discount the wins, for whatever lame reason you want to, you’re still faced with the fact that Tebow beats Newt statistically in other departments as a passer and runner. Even though he is working with a group of young, raw, receivers.

  101. mmcdan133 says: Dec 15, 2011 6:31 PM

If every player in the league were put in an open draft today, Cam Newton would be one of the top 3 picks. His ceiling…well, there isn’t one. He is that rare specimen that can literally be as good as he wants to be.

I like Tebow a lot. I think he’s going to make it. He’s got guts, and he can date my daughter any time. But if you’re seriously arguing that Tebow is a better prospect than Cam Newton, you need to take a breath. The past 8 weeks have been a whirlwind, and it’s easy to get caught up in all things Tebow.

The bottom line is this, Tebow will level off and then get better in moderation. Cam Newton, from this point forward, will take off like a rocket and be an annual MVP threat. There is no comparison.

  102. frankiefiveangels says: Dec 15, 2011 6:32 PM

Why does Steve Smith feel the need to run his mouth about Tebow? Because Tebow brings out the envy and insecurities in a lot of people like Smith. Someone they don’t identify with is now the biggest star (for good or bad) in the game and they can’t deal with it. Get over it Smith and the rest of the haters.

  103. toad8572 says: Dec 15, 2011 6:56 PM

It seems that the “leaders” from other teams (Urlacher, Smith) who disparage Tebow are probably frustrated because he genuinely is what they’re not, a real LEADER. If you’re really a team leader, get busy and elevate the level of your team’s play. Can’t? Didn’t think so…

Yes yess… tebow’s winning games and yes yes newton throws the interceptions and turns the ball over, but to compare them talent wise makes zero sense. Let Newton grow as a player and give him a few seasons to learn how to be an NFL quarterback and then we’ll see. the carolina panthers are the youngest team in the NFL and that’s why were not winning games, cuz we dont know how yet. 109. nightwalker43 says: Dec 15, 2011 7:14 PM

Your right, Tebow WINS. Plus, Smith says that great defense. Where was that great defense last year when they went 4-12, even when Brandon Lloyd and Kyle Orton had very good years on the offensive side of the ball. You can make an argument that the Broncos style of offensive today, while limiting their possessions, keeps their defense fresh by eating up the clock. That means less 3 and outs and more prolonged drives, enabling the defense to catch their breathe. NEWTON has yet to prove that he is either a potential Super Bowl winning QB (he very well could, skies the limit for him) or he is just MICHAEL VICK. Great individual stats, yet doesn’t translate in wins.

  110. gatorfan1 says: Dec 15, 2011 7:14 PM

Well…umm… let’s see here. Both have dad’s that are minister’s…oops, there’s ONE big difference, Cam’s dad tried to sell his son to the highest bidder!! Funny how outraged people get about Tebow’s display of religion BUT are not outraged about a minister selling his son. Strange.

One throws his stolen computer out the window & CALLS his lawyer in another bedroom while the campus police are in his apartment investigating. There’s someone who knows how to play the system!!! Odd for a preacher’s son.

One throws his teammates under the bus saying “he’s a lion in a safari”???? and accuses them of having a “losing” mentality. Nice way to win over teammates!!!

Yeah…let’s wait a couple of seasons and see who turns out to be the winner of a QB. We already know who won the “being a decent human being” trophy between the two. Just saying…

  111. stz99 says: Dec 15, 2011 7:29 PM

First of all, Tebow winning games has nothing to do with faith! C’mon! The guy throws for less than 100 yards a game and he’s the best thing since sliced bread? God has no place in sports! You can have faith all you want, but talent, hard work and some luck win you games. I admit he’s been very lucky so far this season, but his career is still very very young and he hasn’t proven anything yet! Having said that, the Pats will crush the Broncos this week! Brady is far too superior to let a flukie, 4th quarter QB beat him…Brady can score at will! Pats haven’t won too many games in the past against the Broncos and I think that will motivate them to kick some a**….

  112. olskool711 says: Dec 15, 2011 7:35 PM

Denver has been playing great defense annd though outplayed by NYJ, and Chi they managed to get a couple wins. All who have spent a good amount of Sundays watching NFL know Tebow has bottom 3rd of the league talent so yes, Steve Smith is correct- next story?

    “Tebowmaniacs”?

Why take such a dismissive tone, when people on the other side of the debate are usually just as passionate?

This blog just gets snarkier by the minute. I’m sure most of NFL agrees with Steve Smith, and he has a right to his opinion. But you wouldn’t (seriously) call him a ‘hater’ for stating it, so why are people who disagree ‘maniacs’?

  120. chargers12345 says: Dec 15, 2011 8:53 PM

Ok this is what I think. Tebow might be great now but in the long run teams are going to start figuring him out. They know that he doesnt have the greatest arm already so teams will start playing man to man making it alot harder for Tebow to run. Cam newton has a better arm than Tebow and he can run the ball at the same time, making him better in the long run(unless he gets injured) and it also makes it harder for teams to come up with gameplan to stopping Newton. Thats just my opinion.

  121. timmihendrix says: Dec 15, 2011 9:27 PM

Steve Smith is a “butthole” who sucker punched his teammate so I wouldn’t expect him to realize the importance of leadership. I won’t argue that cam is putting on a show now but flashy plays and big stats can be outweighed by a me first attitude and disrespecting your veteran teammates. Time will tell, maybe cam will grow up, and maybe Tim will have a coach who help him to fix his footwork that Urban Meyer somehow thought was acceptable.I for one wish them both the best.

You Tebow fans are cracking me up. I can’t tell if you’re serious or not. “He just wins”? C’mon – the guys going 8 for 15 every game and playing against the frikkin’ AFC West, which could be the worst division in football. He looks like he’s chucking a shotput when he throws the ball. Cam’s already broken the rushing TD record for a QB and he’s going to break Manning’s rookie QB passing record. How is this even a conversation?

The Broncos are going to win their terrible division, get stomped in the 1st round of the playoffs and then get stuck with a mid-round pick next April – which means once again they’ll have no QB of the future. Tebow has heart, but he ain’t leading his team to a Super Bowl – ever.

  124. jaypace says: Dec 16, 2011 1:10 AM

Why do some of you think tebow is just running all game. Fact is he is improving as a passer. The Denver d has played well, but this is the same d that started the year1-4. While the d keeps it close you have to give credit to tebow for putting points on the board when his team needs them. I don’t think some of you watch the games and are still trying to formulate an opinion based on outdated info. He’s not as good as some make him but he’s not nearly as bad as detractors make him either.

Tebow has only beaten one team with a record that has 2 more wins than losses. the rest winning records of the teams he beat are 7-6. barely above 500. Look at the schedule for the Panthers I think it was rated as the second hardest in the NFL. Still don’t get why, them being last in the league a year ago.

I was a huge doubter of Cam Newton’s.

WOW, was I ever wrong. He really is a once-in-a-generation type of offensive talent.

Cam seems to be not only a stand-up leader, but he’s so much more than the real deal under center. Tebow’s “improvement under center” is kind of hilarious considering that he’s not done half of what Cam did in his *first game* as an NFL quarterback.
