People were expecting a big “impact” type player, but what they’ve seen is just a solid linebacker. I think that it probably says a lot more about the people around Mayo than it does about Jerod. Belichick can’t use him the way he’d probably like to because if Jerod isn’t there to make the play 3 to 7 yards down the field you might be looking at a touchdown. The risk/reward is just not conducive for letting this guy loose to wreak havoc.

If you have watched every play you would have noticed that due to the lack of additional LB or Safety help, Mayo has to play an increased role/area. Playing the position closer to the line would make the middle of the field even more vulnerable than it is. Mayo “does his job” and makes it easier for others to do theirs. If the pats find a decent safety and another smart LB………

If u actually watch every Pats game and you honestly think Jerod Mayo is an average linebacker you don’t know football. Mayo is one of the better inside linebackers in the league. He’s always around the ball and he often makes touchdown saving tackles that few other linebackers could make. If you rely solely on statistics to tell you the value of defensive players then you must also think guys like Revis or Asomugha or average players also.

He makes lots of tackles, but a lot of them are 3-7 yards from the line of scrimmage. He has two interceptions the last two weeks, the first two in his career! He is not a playmaker, he is well, average. I just hope they paid him as such.

The last two weeks aside, he hasn’t been much of a playmaker, which is what the Pats desperately need. I think that guy down in Tennessee had the same stats in three and a half games (save for number of tackles) as Mayo did in almost four years.

But nonetheless, I’m glad they’ll be some stability on that defense. Mayo is a solid teammate and seems like a top quality guy to have in the locker room. You can’t have enough of those type of guys. Hope he keeps improving and stays healthy.
