Report: Santana Moss owes IRS more than $250,000

Washington Redskins v Carolina Panthers Getty Images

Redskins receiver Santana Moss has made plenty of money during 11 NFL seasons.  The IRS believes that it hasn’t gotten its full cut.

The Detroit News reports, via USA Today, that Moss owes $258,017 in back taxes.  The claim came to light because a tax lien has been filed on Santana’s $5.2 million home in Florida.

The taxes apply to 2006, a year in which Moss made $1.9 million.

Santana should be able to cut a check and make this go away.  At some point, he’ll need to do it — or he could be the one going away.

Dude’s going to end up broke, no way he can afford a 5.2 million dollar house, considering the spend rate of athletes

If he can’t pay it now, the IRS will give him a payment plan. He just needs to call.

NFL player should be required to select accountants from an approved pool.

    Couple of things:

1: Tax information and problems are private, until a lien gets filed. Liens against real estate are public record, show up on credit reports, and should be lest our boy try to sell that property and not pay The Man. And of course, 2 and 2 get put together once the lien holder is…surprise…the gummint…

    2. Unless he committed tax fraud, like Wesley Snipes did, he isn’t going to the can for it. Why? Because its difficult for Uncle to get paid what he’s owed if our boy is mopping prison floors for 10 cents an hour…not to mention the taxpayer having to feed, clothe, and house said individual for the duration.

Santana Moss is definitely not a “bozo”. He’s been solid all around since coming to DC on and off the field.

  20. sikoix says: Dec 17, 2011 3:18 PM

It’s probably being disputed. The IRS is well known for randomly auditing people and sending bills for back taxes. It usually comes as a surprise, to say the least.

  23. j0esixpack says: Dec 17, 2011 4:45 PM

Let’s not assume Moss has the money – maybe he lost it on a wager, taking Rex Ryan’s “guarantee” too literally perhaps?

The IRS is always good for some laughs – it’s not taxes – it’s a “Service” to produce “Internal Revenue”

Nfl players do not fill out w2, I am pretty sure they are independent contractors and thus pay their own taxes.

I get the feeling this is one of those deals where moss Tryed to write things off he couldn’t and is most likely fighting the ruling. Why else would a guy not pay that little amount when he makes so much.

To the ” I hate the IRS ” crowd, ur all morons. Without taxes and the it’s to make sure they are paid you wouldnt have an nfl to watch or anything really. But go ahead and keep up your fox news type talking points, it sure makes you sound smart. * rolls eyes *

I’m with you on that point. Moss has been one of the only bright spots for our skins for several years. Definitely not a bozo…..stand up guy too. He will get this straight. He can wash Snyder’s Escalade for some extra cash.

He should be punished. He is in the 1% who abuse the rest of us. Eventhough I smoke pot all day and decide not to work and most consider me a bum. Santana and his crowd should pay for my existance.

At least that is want Barak told us.

146 years ago today the 13th amendment freed the slaves, just not the semi-slaves. Whats that crap about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness about? Land of the free? Not hardly. And then dimwits like andyreidisfat try telling others they’re dumb. hey andy, when you roll your eyes, does your peabrain roll with them? You would not only still have an NFL without taxes on income, you’d have 40 teams. Life would be so much better without it. The IRS are nazi’s. They could raise taxes with a simply, small VAT tax without the intrusion and bullying that goes on now. Ben Franklin said the man that trades liberty for security deserves neither. I guess eye rollin’ andy is happy being a zoo animal. I’m not. My rights are ” inaleiable” according to the constitution. Keep you hands in your own pockets, theives. Ban the IRS!!!!

Huh??? Glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t understand the point you’re trying to make. What exactly is the “it’s” you’re talking about “to make sure they are paid”???

And what in the wide world of sports is the correlation between taxes and the NFL? If I’m not mistaken, the NFL makes their revenue through advertising, merchandising, ticket sales, stadium revenue, etc. The only tax support they get is when they need their stadiums upgraded or replaced — and even then not always.

Now, if you want to get into a discussion about PUBLIC (ie, government-sponsored) programs like education, welfare, prisons, or public broadcasting (that’s PBS and NPR, not cable, network, or satellite) that our tax money pays for, that’s an entirely different discussion for an entirely different blog.

    *rolls eyes*

I realized I’m coming late to this party but, I wholeheartedly disagree with golonger (and agree with freddavisbong).

Moss is NOT a bozo and I don’t say this just because I’m a Redskins fan. The guy is a hard-working, mature professional who cares about the same things most Americans care about.

If he owes money to the IRS, it’s likely because of something about which we have no idea… a dispute, a mistake on forms, whatever. I’m sure he’s dealing with it. But that part of the story isn’t newsworthy…. only the fact that he owes the taxes is. The fact that he is taking measures to handle it doesn’t make the internet or sport shows.

IRS audits and disputes happen to a lot of normal, hard-working people every single day. It should be treated like a “scarlet letter” anymore. I bet a lot more people have the same type of issue (albeit on a smaller scale than Moss) than you think.

I may be wrong but your comment makes you sound ignorant and jealous. Maybe you have some other reason for saying something that indicates a such a serious lack of thought?
