Antonio Gates wasn’t bothered by the “old and fat” remark

Last month, an unnamed member of the Chargers organization described tight end Antonio Gates as “old and fat.”

On Friday night’s NBC SportsTalk, Peter King, Russ Thaler, and I asked Gates how much motivation he obtained from that remark, along with plenty of other stuff.

Gates, by the way, needs five catches to become the all-time franchise leader in receptions.  After missing this games due to a lingering foot problem, Gates has started eight in a row.  During that stretch, Gates has 45 catches for 527 yards and six touchdowns.

Gates and the Chargers host the Ravens tonight on Sunday Night Football.

Do I need to mention it’s on NBC?

He has definitely gotten a little pudgy compared to 5 years ago. But he still is really good.

The funny thing about Gates is that even though he does look old and fat, HE’S STILL PRODUCING. The beginning of the season was a nightmare but he’s looked solid the past few weeks and is still someone a defense has keep an eye on…even if he is OLD AND FAT!

Rex Ryan can’t believe Gates let himself go like that. He is surprised Gates doesn’t have more pride in his appearance.

Well this just blows. I’m a lot old and a lot fatter… and all for a lot less money.

I’d rather be old and fat breaking records, than young and skinny riding the bench.
