Adrian Peterson says Saints went too far taking shots at his ankle

Saints Vikings Football AP

Adrian Peterson says he can accept the fact that when you’re an NFL running back and your name is listed on the injury report, teams are going to take shots at your injury. But even accepting that, Peterson thinks the Saints went too far on Sunday.

After the Vikings’ loss to New Orleans, Peterson said Saints cornerback Jabari Greer twisted his ankle in a pile.

I came into the game kind of expecting that coming back from a high ankle sprain,” Peterson said, via the Times-Picayune. “Guys are going to try to take their shots when we’re on the pile and try to twist it up and things like that. I felt like it kind of got overboard. I got up and kind of got in his face. Thank God I was able to keep my composure.”

But Peterson says the Saints didn’t slow him down: On the play after the incident with Greer, Peterson broke off a 39-yard run.

Saints are a dirty team. They were dirty in the NFC Championship Game versus the Vikes — and were officially fined for it (albeit the ref missed the calls).

    Well, they did.

  6. zappa69 says: Dec 19, 2011 12:06 PM

This happens all the time. The only reason it is posted on PFT is because it’s the Vikings and Saints. If the Vikings could tackle they would be doing it too. Shut up and move on. Vikes fan here.

  8. farmmbig says: Dec 19, 2011 12:10 PM

Greer did it— Saw it on the TV broadcast…

Worst part is how the Viking teammates didn’t seem to have AD’s back and deliver any type of payback.

Been the Vikings (and Frazier’s) mode of operation ALL year— Let the opponent knock your ass around.

  9. snarkzilla says: Dec 19, 2011 12:11 PM

The Saints are as dirty as any team in football but are more skilled at keeping it stealthy.

  10. Deb says: Dec 19, 2011 12:13 PM

You can say the Vikes are whiners, but they’re not the only team that’s told stories about the Saints playing dirty when no one’s looking. Sounds like they’re the new Titans.

  11. nflfollower says: Dec 19, 2011 12:13 PM

Now that’s dirty. Accidentally hitting helmet to helmet at full speed is not dirty. Anybody who has played football at a high level and is not sucking Goodell’s power teet understands this.

Well, i am a lions fan but i still dont blame AP. Football is an agressive sport yes, but doesnt mean u have to be dirty and try to physically break someones bones after the whistle blows to be a good team. Just play hard on each play and thats it.

  15. goodluckking says: Dec 19, 2011 12:16 PM

Funny, seems like every week there is some player complaining about the Saints being cheap and I don’t see the masses writing about how dirty they are I guess they are still beloved at this point.

  16. ericbruning says: Dec 19, 2011 12:16 PM

  17. thejuddstir says: Dec 19, 2011 12:17 PM

I happened to watch that game and I thought the same thing on many of Peterson’s runs and even commented to a couple of my buddies who were watching with me. I specifically remember seeing the one with Greer. Peterson wasn’t going to be able to beat the Saints with that trainwreck of a team he is on but there shouldn’t be any place in the game for the dirty crap that some teams pull.

  18. ilovefoolsball says: Dec 19, 2011 12:17 PM

BTW Where has Pervy Harvin been? I almost forgot about his existence until midway into the 3rd quarter of that annihilation yesterday.

I understand his hiding though. Not much you can say when your team gets humiliated week after week. Have fun fishing Pervy!

Everyone loves on the Saints, but they are dirty. Let’s just say if a certain team in New England had run up a 62-7 score on a team, there would be no end to the outrage. If a certain QB in that same area had been throwing 40+ times in a blowout, there would be cries for bad sportmanship and stat padding.

Either way, the Saints are going to have to go on the road at some point in the playoffs and I think they lay a big egg. I read one report calling this a big road win. Really? Against the Vikes? Ummmm….no.

Wha Wha Wah. Saints must be doing something right after all these years. Ha ha. Funny that AP is complaining and whining about their loss to the next SB Champions and Jared Allen the Vikings great pass rusher said the saints played an awesome game and that not once did the Saints hold him. If AP don’t like his legs and ankles getting twisted he has 2 choices, quit the NFL or just don’t get takled any more. Ha Ha. Either way he is in control of the situation. And ha ha to the Vikings loud mouths that said the Vikings were gonna win this one. That’s funny! Geaux Saints! And go steelers 2nite so the Saints can secure the #2 seed! Ain’t life great!

  28. FinFan68 says: Dec 19, 2011 12:39 PM

All teams have players that do that sort of thing. It’s wrong and there is no defending it. The “it’s just football” argument is weak. Play clean between the whistles. Targeting a player is fine. Targeting a player’s injury is not, especially after the whistle. The Saints are not alone in this and those fans that think their team doesn’t do it are naive.

  29. deconjonesbitchslap says: Dec 19, 2011 12:41 PM

These types of plays have happened over and over again over the last few years. Where is Roger Goodell and his iron fist? Oh wait, he is too busy worrying about creating revenue for the league through James Harrison. James Harrison may push the play to the whistle and at some points hit illegally, he has never been out to hurt another player after the play is finished.

The fact that the Saints are still getting away with stuff like that after the whole world saw what they did to Farve in the NFC title game is absurd.

I mean its like running to your dad and saying the guys are playing to rough.
He wasn’t out there playing for his fantasy team any more than I was lifting the front end of a 56 Buick.
Me thinks he has a yardage incentive in his contract and he needs to obtain more yards to reach it.
PS: Adrian you of all people should know when the team is down big time, they don’t run the ball to catch up.

  38. goawayeverybody says: Dec 19, 2011 1:11 PM

  39. Derty Ernie says: Dec 19, 2011 1:14 PM

Peterson will be complaining big time in the off season: the vikes need: defensive backs, receivers, QB’s that can throw, and linebackers.
Good luck getting all those needs filled in the off season.
Its going to be several years before this team is competitive again and AP will be at the end of his career by then. He will realize that soon enough then the bitching to be traded will start up.

  40. stadanko says: Dec 19, 2011 1:16 PM

The Vikings are just going to cry their way to a Lombardi trophy. I’m sure Vince Lombardi cried with his players when people were mean to him.

I guess I wouldn’t expect any less from Vikings fans. The few that are left are just going to make excuses for their team. Meanwhile the “overrated” Saints proved just how overrated Jared Allen and Adrian Peterson really are.

  41. goawayeverybody says: Dec 19, 2011 1:19 PM

joesuhunka, do you think you could learn how to spell “arrogant”?

In any case, actually, it’s the other way around. Drew Brees wasn’t much until he hooked up with Sean Payton. Payton is easily the best coach in the NFL.

And I’d rather be rooting for the “dirty” team that won. Not the whiny team that lost.

  42. cowhawkfan says: Dec 19, 2011 1:20 PM

    ————————–

What’s wrong with an onside kick (the Saints were only up 14-6, by the way)? And how could Payton have known the Saints were on their way to scoring 40+? The fact is that the Saints should have recovered the onside. Two different players had it and were unable to secure the ball. I’m sure the plan was to recover the kick and score, which would’ve been a punch to the Vikings’ gut and might have taken the fight out of a bad team. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Luckily this time it didn’t matter.

  47. eballa1 says: Dec 19, 2011 1:38 PM

Good thing the Saints couldn’t slow him down. Wait, what was the score again?

These two teams have played three times in the past three years, who won those games?

Sour grapes if you ask me. We hear about the Saints being a dirty team now that they are on their way to the playoffs again. You don’t like the way the Saints play? Beat them then.

  48. franktherat96 says: Dec 19, 2011 1:45 PM

Every team in the league does this. I have seen times where players have taken those kinds of shots on Saints players. it happens.

  49. purpleguy says: Dec 19, 2011 2:01 PM

So just becasue my team sucks, I’m not allowed to comment on bush-league dirty play by another team? A team that every team that’s played them before this past year has also done the same thing? I can’t believe I’m saying this, but the Saints ought to look at Green Bay as an example of a team that for the most part wins with clean and respectful play.

  50. asurtain says: Dec 19, 2011 2:05 PM

I’m not sure if some of you realize this, but this is the league that allowed clothesline tackles, helmet first hits, head slaps, etc. I’m trying to figure out why a twisted ankle is bad. Sure, it is dirty. Guess what, last time I checked, every team has done something dirty. Do you realize what happens in the pile up for a fumble? It ain’t handshakes and pleasantries. This is football. Greer twisting his ankle is nothing in the scheme of things. AP said that he expected players to go after his ankle. It happens. How can he whine about it when he knows it will happen? He is my favorite back, but just hush.

Sure the Saints are dirty. So are the Packers, Giants, Broncos, Seahawks, Dolphins, and every other team. So, they kept trying to score for a while. There was no outrage. Ok. I don’t remember too much outrage when the Patriots were scoring 50 during the 18-1 season. You can’t even say they tried to run up the score after a while, bedside they took Brees out. Stop whining. This is football. Players are going to hit you and maybe give a little extra. Also, if you’re tired of a team scoring on you, STOP THEM!!!

  51. glink123 says: Dec 19, 2011 2:21 PM

brilliant idea. sounds like the NHL and Sid Crosby. intentionally try to injure the league’s premier player. heck, go ahead and injure all of them. Rodgers, Brady, Brees… Put the top 25 NFL players on IR. Brilliant marketing move. Then sit back and watch the television ratings plummet to all-time lows. then watch your salaries plummet to all-time lows. freaking morons. someday you’ll figure out that these superstars are the reason why the rest of you bottom-feeder players are making $1 million salaries.

  53. chmba says: Dec 19, 2011 2:28 PM

The league suspends Suh 2 games for a kick which did NOT result in injury (no problem from me that they did it) and only 1 game for severe helmet-helmet from chronic offender Harrison which resulted in concussion.

When are they going to take action against coaches who COACH this type of behavior! Gunther Cunningham, Greg Robinson, etc.

I am long time Saints and Packers fan but this stuff will not stop as long as teams are able to coach it and get away with it. Bet you that all of these players somehow get contract modification, etc. to get their money back from the teams!

I see why other NFC North teams laugh at Vikings fans. They’re pathetic. Whine and cry, cry and whine. Guess that’s how they got so many lakes. But that class is showing through. Here’s a newsflash: Our entire city was wiped off the map by Katrina and we STILL won a Superbowl before the crying Vikings and their whiney fanbase. Ouch.

  77. kake1972 says: Dec 20, 2011 12:37 AM

I believe Peterson had a legitimate complaint. When the whistle is blown, end of play! Until then, what happens, happens. Every team is guilty of playing dirty at some point (Robison’s kick to the crotch!) but the Saints have been called a dirty team for a long time. For those of you who think Vikings fans are whining, you’ve obviously never dealt with a real Vikings fan. They get screwed by the refs quite a bit, to the point where commentators have complained. It’s not just the Vikings it happens to plenty of other teams have been screwed too. The refereeing has been questionable and crappy for quite a few seasons now. Or maybe it’s just becoming more blatant. Regardless, the Vikings really have no one to blame for this miserable freaking season but themselves. And that is coming from a die-hard. Does that sound like whining? No? Didn’t think so.

  78. akasaintsbaby says: Dec 20, 2011 12:46 AM

ratedgap: Yeah, you won the SB because we handed you the NFC championship game on a platter. The Vikings lost that game more than the Saints won it.

The Saints have been a dirty team for years but have been under the radar because they’ve become the darlings of the media since Katrina. Yes, it was disastrous and tragic and congrats on cleaning up and rebuilding (with a whole lot of help from the rest of the country). And I think anyone who wishes for another Katrina, or any other disaster, is a moron.

The thing is, I can’t even blame NO for the media love affair. The media itself is to blame; it seems they can’t just let go and move on. In the years since Katrina (and it has been years), the world has continued to turn on its axis and life has continued to go on. It’s time for the media to do the same and stop handling NO with kid gloves, in and outside of football.

jerrykill4pres, you must be braindead. If McCarthy is such a great coach, why did you guys look so clueless just because one player was missing from your offense? How can you justify losing to the feckless Chiefs?

And by the way, the phrase Geaux Saints is a play on words and a reference to the heritage of New Orleans. Something that is clearly lost on you. I was under the impression that the Packers fans were a cut above most others, but you are proving me wrong and your vituperative reaction clearly shows just how scared you are of facing the Saints again. If the Saints face the Packers again, it will be Saints 56, Packers 31. You can write it down.

The Packers defense is awful and getting worse every week, not better. And you know it.

ratedgap: Yeah, you won the SB because we handed you the NFC championship game on a platter. The Vikings lost that game more than the Saints won it.

Tad bit delusional, no? Saints FORCED turnovers. Well, except the one where Harvin was all by himself and fumbled the ball. Maybe he was scared to get hit again. That season, the Saints were among the league leaders in forcing turnovers, it was the basis for our defensive success, so, I don’t think, well, I know the Vikes didn’t hand us anything. Like the honey badger, we took what we wanted. This is the difference between Saints and Vikes fans. We went to a terrible Seattle team in the playoffs last year and got whupped. We don’t say we handed anything to Seattle. They beat us. Even though we were down to signing RBs two days before the game because we had 6 on IR, Malcolm Jenkins was out, etc. They beat us. End of story. Sooner Vikes fans can get to that point in their lives, the sooner they can come closer to not being laughingstocks.

And please, it’s patently false the Saints have been “dirty for years.” Got any proof besides us constantly whipping the Vikings? Didn’t Brian Robison nutshot somebody? Vikings been dirty for years. See how that works? There is no media love still coming from Katrina. Get over it. At some point y’all gotta stop being victims. But probably not. Gotta be pretty depressing to live in Minnesota.

    NFC Championship Game record:

Please don’t blame your problems on the Saints.

The Saints won the sb because they went to Miami and took it from the unbeatable Colts. The vikings gave them nothing.

Please stop posting any viking related story in the Saints section. I am sick of hearing the whining and excuses from this pathetic fan base. There is no end to their moronic statements. Wishing for another Katrina, etc.
These idiots even show up in an article about the Saints giving a sb ring to Steve Gleason . The guy has als and everyone posting was wishing him and his family well. But even is this context a whining viking fan has to spew his vomit in the story.

I didn’t see anything about this being a Saints site for one. For two there is just as much crap from other people. I saw this article thru Vikings Edition of the bleacher report. Are you maybe in the wrong section? By the way, not all of us are ignorant or into whining. As far as being a Viking fan, I am NOT pathetic! I happen to be loyal to me team whatever the circumstances. I don’t remember too many Saints fans like that. Seems there was a lot jumping on the old band wagon once they started doing something.

Well, there’s a persuasive argument. Can you elaborate?

  87. ratedgap says: Dec 21, 2011 8:29 AM

A more elaborate response to your ill informed clearly biased statement about Saints fans definitely isn’t warranted.

  88. kake1972 says: Dec 21, 2011 3:40 PM

You can rant about Vikings fans and it’s ok. So you can dish it but not take it. I didn’t say anything demeaning, just expressing an opinion. However reading your posts you obviously think it’s fine for you to be” ill informed and clearly biased”.

  89. ratedgap says: Dec 21, 2011 7:56 PM

The comments of your Vikings fans here give me all the ammo needed to rant. They make it easy to be very informed without bias on the standard Vikings fan. I doubt you’ve ever been to New Orleans at any point to quantify who was and wasn’t jumping on the bandwagon. So, you can continue to try, or reprimand the “I hope there’s another Katrina” portion of your fanbase. By far not the first time it’s been said since and even before the NFC Champ game two years ago by a Vikes fan. See what I did there? Actual accounts from Vikings fans as opposed to wanton ignorance. Give it a try.

Good point, but, shouldn’t the number of SB appearances be equal to the NFCCG wins

    prove it.

i dont label teams as ‘dirty’ because of accusations that may or may not be true.

just a bunch of media hype and bandwagon haters, in my eyes.

    oh and…. 42-20 WHODAT
