Rex Ryan: There will be extra incentive for New York “war”

R. Ryansad

The Jets and Giants are both hurting after suffering beatdowns on Sunday.

With both teams on the edge of the playoffs, you wouldn’t think there could be any extra motivation for their matchup Saturday, but Rex Ryan says that isn’t true.

It’s almost like Ryan is a hype man looking to sell tickets.

“It’s going to be ridiculous. You know it’s going to bet . . . that’s a war,” Ryan said after the Jets’ loss. “Whoever loses is probably out, and the fact is that we’re both fighting for our playoff lives. But to say that there won’t be any extra incentive is not right.”

“I mean obviously, there’s going to be extra incentive, extra motivation. You go to the same restaurants, you go to the . . . whatever, guys date the same girls, I don’t know.”

Yes. Whoever wins Saturday gets the girl. We’re not so sure about the playoff spot. It’s very conceivable to imagine the Jets or Giants losing on Saturday, and still having a chance to make the playoffs in the final week.

But don’t tell that to Ryan, who has never been great on playoff scenarios. To Ryan, this week is as much about the playoffs as owning the back page of the paper.

“You want to own your town, you got to win that game,” Ryan said.

The Jets’ first goal this year was owning the AFC East. For now, he’s aiming lower again.

Rex just be quiet. The Jets can win 3 Super Bowls in 10 years and this still and always WILL BE Giants Country. Spoken like a true outta towner.

He forgot to mention that both teams sucked the big one to the point that they were embarassing yesterday.
Even if you “own the town” Rex you’re going no where and this year has to be seen as an incredible failure, the likes of which often cost head coaches their job.

  6. vegaskid21 says: Dec 19, 2011 9:23 AM

Jets are still in the playoff hunt???

  7. hardpeaches says: Dec 19, 2011 9:28 AM

The Jets just need to bring in a hypnotist to convince Rex that he’ll get free BBQ ribs for life if the Jets win.

Alas, the Jets mojo always catches up with them…

  8. grpatriot says: Dec 19, 2011 9:29 AM

Well if it’s a war, New yawkers got spanked yesterday!

  9. thereisalwaysnextyear says: Dec 19, 2011 9:31 AM

““It’s going to be ridiculous. You know it’s going to bet . . . ”

Did he really say it’s going to bet, or maybe that should say be? Another non-proofread post. SHOCKER

  10. thejuddstir says: Dec 19, 2011 9:32 AM

Damn, we only made it about 12 hrs witout hearing 1)about Packers undefeated season 2) a tebow miracle comeback and 3) Rex open his yap…………………….I’m not even a NY fan but something tells me that it would take several winning seasons and SB’s for the Jets to ever “own NY”. It’s a blue city, always has been and always will be. Guess Rex couldn’t convince his team of any extra incentive yesterday in their beatdown.

  11. ampats says: Dec 19, 2011 9:32 AM

You would think after getting SPANKED by the Eagles Rex would turn it down a notch. But NO , lets watch the Paper Lombardi team lose the battle of NY.

Happy 43rd jets fans. Rex’s guarantees get funnier every week !

PS Very classy move by Captain Bluntonio Holmes celebrating that TD resulting in a 15 yd penalty.. No class from the top to the bottom of the red headed stepchild football team from Florham Park.

Isn’t it time this blowhard wins something? YAWN.

  13. andyreidcarboload says: Dec 19, 2011 9:33 AM

Ryan went on to say that they also shop at the same shoe stores.

  14. xxwhodatxx says: Dec 19, 2011 9:33 AM

He just can’t help himself. I used to find his trash talk amusing cause there was a chance the team might back it up. The Jets are a joke and Ryan and Sanchez are the punch line.

  15. fittytuckin says: Dec 19, 2011 9:35 AM

    Rex, shut the eff up.

  16. jgboys1 says: Dec 19, 2011 9:37 AM

  17. spellingcops says: Dec 19, 2011 9:37 AM

I don’t think there’s many G men clamoring for Sanchez’s high school dates. Go Giants!

Finally, some Rex Ryan comments that mostly make sense.

  19. kacapaco says: Dec 19, 2011 9:40 AM

Rex-big mouth-Ryan is the one to lose and realize talking and playing football r two different things. Go big G.

  20. joerevs300 says: Dec 19, 2011 9:40 AM

    - The Jets will never win a Super Bowl with Sanchez at QB. He is absolutely horrible. If the Jets lose this game, they are done, period. Miami has been one of the best teams in the 2nd half of the season and have played better at home.
    – The Giants, on the other hand, WTH? One week you take it to the Cowboys on the road, the next you complete no-show against a team playing for pride. That sweep at the hands of the Redskins probably means no playoffs.

As much as I would hate the Cowboys to get into the playoffs, it would be very satisfying to see them get beat by either Detroit or Atlanta. Atlanta would almost be a shoo-in to win. The Lions will probably end up taking a costly penalty or two too many and get beat in the postseason.

What is shocking to me is, as bad as KC has lost, they still have a chance to win the AFC West.

And personally, I’m pulling for DEN to win, I think they can upset BAL at home and that would be a freaking easy win for the Steelers, if they can beat SF and win their final 2 games.

  21. wallacejay says: Dec 19, 2011 9:42 AM

    Yawn

  22. jmp527 says: Dec 19, 2011 9:43 AM

Sorry Rex, but “war” is young men and women fighting to protect your freedoms while putting their actual lives on the line.

  23. xtb3 says: Dec 19, 2011 9:43 AM

Neiter deserves to nor will make these playoffs. Goodbye Coughlin and Gilbride. Rex Ryan is repeating how Buddy Ryan flamed out in Philaselphia.

  24. brs027 says: Dec 19, 2011 9:43 AM

    Eli>Sanchez

  25. tonystrong says: Dec 19, 2011 9:44 AM

Typical Rex. Team’s fighting for their playoff life, playing a NY rivalry that only comes to the regular season every 4 years, and he’s worried about who’s going to have bragging rights in their favorite restaurants. Notice he couldn’t even come up with a second “motivation” after restaurant hahaha! “Lay off me I’m starving!!!” hahaha

  26. bellichickshoody says: Dec 19, 2011 9:48 AM

Everyone on the Jets gets a free “creepy foot wash” if they win…hows that incentive

  27. trollhammer20 says: Dec 19, 2011 9:48 AM

His mouth never stops, does it?

  28. vickismydogg says: Dec 19, 2011 9:50 AM

Good. The only time you’ll see me actually wishing Rex Ryan’s sh*t talking is for real.

    Go Birds! Still alive!

  29. Patskrieg dot com says: Dec 19, 2011 9:51 AM

A Namath-esque guarantee of victory would be some real extra incentive.

But brazen off the cuff declarations like that don’t really seem like Coach Ryan’s cup of tea.

  30. musiccitymiracle says: Dec 19, 2011 9:51 AM

“You go to the same restaurants.” Playoff spots are one thing, but when hamburgers are on the line, you know Rex is going to be fired up.

  31. jimr10 says: Dec 19, 2011 9:52 AM

How about that… You can call both NJ teams, The Philadelphia OWNED NJ teams… NJ jits 0-9 and the nj gints are 1-8 against the Philadelphia eaglesin the past 3 years. Wow, just wow. The funny part is that the jits will beat the gints this week and the eagles will win the NFC E. HAHAHAHA

  40. RexCanCoach says: Dec 19, 2011 10:01 AM

The Rex machine is at it again. Despite all of his bluster, you cannot hide the fact that Sanchez looked pathetic vs. Eagles.

  41. mikehockhurtz says: Dec 19, 2011 10:07 AM

Jets win this one, gift wrap the playoffs to the Cowboys, then the Cowboys choke and lose to the Eagles later that day….

Whats funny is the only part of a Superbowl Philthy has owned in the last 30 years is a puddle of Chunky soup. Yet their fans keep acting like they’ve done something.

  46. zaggs says: Dec 19, 2011 10:16 AM

  47. 1972wasalongtimeago says: Dec 19, 2011 10:28 AM

All Jets fans know how this is going to end. With a loss in Miami to knock them out.

  48. mwcarolina says: Dec 19, 2011 10:28 AM

Elite Eli vs. Mark Sanchize, hahaha, ok, bad jokes aside, what’s funny is that the Giants or Jets could lose and still make the playoffs, but would need help. if the Giants lose vs. the Jets and say the Cowboys lose to the Eagles, then all that has to happen is the Eagles lose the next week and then have the Giants beat the Boys and they are in and for the Jets, just have teams like the Bengals and Broncos lose and they are in. but i think this is a big game for both teams. if i HAD to pick now, i think Manning wins.

  49. pigskinswag says: Dec 19, 2011 10:30 AM

The “home team” will defintely win this game….and they’ll definitely lose this game

  50. grilledjesus says: Dec 19, 2011 10:34 AM

After a 45-19 loss Rex wants to battle for “King of NY Restaurants”? Seriously?

Don’t worry Jets fans, I’m sure there’s some way that you can back into the playoffs for a 3rd year.

  51. tshirttom says: Dec 19, 2011 10:39 AM

Doesn’t really matter who wins…both teams are going nowhere post-season. Rex please shut up will ya and just for once get your team ready to play and not disappoint.

  52. cleverbob says: Dec 19, 2011 10:45 AM

Instead of actually playing the game, Rex Ryan and Antrel Rolle should have a debate on which team is better. Winner gets (to sniff) the girl(‘s feet).

    Go Jets.

  53. gcbean says: Dec 19, 2011 10:45 AM

I’m not a fan of either team, but Rex sure keeps it interesting. I don’t know why so many people get butt hurt from his talking. He is entertaining and gives people a reason to watch the Jets whether they like him or not.

“But don’t tell that to Ryan, who has never been great on playoff scenarios.”

And “media” bloggers have the benefit of having a mathematician give them the scenerios before they type anything. I’d like to see these bloggers be at the podium right after a game and have to know the math. To them, 7-3 is four games over .500.

  59. kisstherings says: Dec 19, 2011 11:02 AM

No, his first goal wasn’t winning the AFC East, that would have been smart.

His first goal was winning the Superbowl and telling anyone who would listen about it…forgetting about all the little things that they had to do first.

  64. bigbluelou says: Dec 19, 2011 11:41 AM

Look..both team defenses suck and if any team make the playoffs they will not go far at all. This has become the National Arena Football League. I hope the Giants miss the playoffs they need to clean house. These second half collapse crap has got to stop. Merry Christmas!

  65. bsizemore68 says: Dec 19, 2011 12:31 PM

When will the governor of New Jersey demand that the 2 teams playing in his state start calling themselves the New Jersey Jets and New Jersey Giants, because there is no NEW YORK jets or giants. Bill p.s. the Bills are going to Canada so they don’t count as a New York team.

  66. vincentbojackson says: Dec 19, 2011 12:37 PM

Does Rex Ryan EVER get tired of hearing himself? He just can’t keep his mouth shut and coach his football team. No wonder the Jets are not the team their fans think they should be.
A coach that is full of hot air. A QB that’s is average at best. A wide receiver that has to celebrate a TD and take a penalty when his team is down big.
It’s sad that they still have a decent shot at the playoffs. If a team doesn’t deserve to go it’s the Jets.

  73. bigbluelou says: Dec 19, 2011 5:51 PM

Jets win in pre-season (Snoopy Bowl). Past history shows Giants win in the regular season.

  74. missingtoe says: Dec 19, 2011 8:54 PM

Does anyone really think that a man who spent his entire life in football doesn’t realize what his team is capable of ? Rex knows exactly where the holes are on this team and that he might not to have much of a chance to win even if he does make the playoffs…. But why would he say that…. In business do you tell your competition that you can’t handle that job or we are not ready for that challenge! NO!!! You believe you are the best and you tell people that you are the best….period!! Not to mention the business he is in, is football. And let’s not forget what football is, It’s a game and what is a game ? It’s entertainment so all this hype and crazy outrages talk from our CEO is really good for business… And not just JETS business but NFL business…. I remember the last time the Giants played the Jets back in 2007 there wasn’t all this talk and Fans really didn’t care who won or lost….. But now with the genius that is Rex Ryan we all will be at the edge of our seats and eyes pinned to the tv screens…. And that is all good for business… So love him or hate him Jets fan or Giants fan he has you biting your nails and hoping and praying for a win…. But We as Jets fans love him!! GO GREEN GO JETS !
