Visanthe Shiancoe: When Vikings fell behind, “Some guys hung it up”

Minnesota Vikings v Washington Redskins Getty Images

Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe says some of his teammates didn’t give enough effort in Sunday’s loss to the Saints.

I would say, you could see some guys hung it up,” Shiancoe said, via 1500ESPN.com. “Not a lot though. Like a very small handful of guys.”

Shiancoe called that lack of hustle on the part of some of his teammates “very, very disappointing.” He did not name names, but he said he will address it with those players personally.

“No doubt,” he said. “You have to somehow influence that. And I will do that. Ain’t no games around here. We’re grown men around here. . . . Can’t see nobody slacking off, especially when you give all your effort. That’s not right, and that’s not going to be accepted.”

Refusing to accept a lack of effort in the future would be wise if the Vikings want to avoid another two-win season.

Is he talking about Frazier, Musgrave, and Pagac? Theres no way this group can be trying with their poor performances week in and week out.

The interviewer should have asked Shiancoe if one of those guys was coach Fraizer.

  10. thankheavenfornumberseven says: Dec 19, 2011 5:50 PM

You can rip Frazier, but how many 2-12 teams only have a handful of guys giving up in the middle of a blowout loss? The guys who don’t care will be gone next season anyway, so I think Frazier has been holding things together pretty well.

  11. pack13queens0 says: Dec 19, 2011 5:53 PM

They’re hanging it up for the season because they’re tired of being in the worst city in the world in Minneapolis & want to look forward to the Los Angeles lifestyle.

Visanthe and hung in the same sentence huh? I do agree with him though.

  13. tjacks7 says: Dec 19, 2011 5:59 PM

How can you tell? They looked like they have all year; horrible.

Sanford shouldn’t be in the NFL. I can’t even name the other safety because he’s usually so lost and out of position he’s not even on the TV.

The O-line cant stop the pass rush if their lives depended on it. Coordinators should blitz every play because at least 3 guys will get through. And if Ponder somehow gets a pass off, it will be intercepted or dropped by the no name receiving core (other than Harvin).

EJ Henderson looks like one of our safety’s out there with his inability to defend the pass. You think after all these years these coaches would realize he shouldn’t be a MLB in a cover 2. BTW, the cover 2 is a joke; change it already.

Decide if Joe Webb is a QB or a WR already. Quit stunting his growth.

The head coach, and both coordinators should be fired ASAP. Along with the GM.

  14. kscogg says: Dec 19, 2011 5:59 PM

They have talent on both sides of the ball but everything revolves around the quarterback position and Ponder is still figuring it out. Maybe its coaching or maybe they did give up but its clear they are pretty far removed from 2 years ago.

  15. donz0 says: Dec 19, 2011 6:13 PM

Randy Moss used to give up. It’s a Viking tradition.

  16. wilnel1984 says: Dec 19, 2011 6:13 PM

Jared Allen was saying pretty much the same thing in an interview for a local station right after the game.

He basically said, “People are going to get fired. If you don’t want to get fired, play like you want it.” or something like that.

For the first time this year, he seemed really upset. He’s been trying to be positive all year, but I think this game just got to him.

I can’t blame him. New Orleans took pity on this team in the 4th quarter. They could have easily scored 60 on Sunday. Hell, Brees would probably have just 150 yards to beat Marino’s record if they would have kept playing him in the 4th quarter.

  17. gottapoop says: Dec 19, 2011 6:14 PM

Who cares? Go address the players then and stop whining to the media.. Vikings as a whole blow.. the last decade I don’t know who is a bigger joke of a team, raiders or vikes

  18. packfaninvikeland says: Dec 19, 2011 6:23 PM

Percy Harvin said a few weeks ago if football was judged on talent alone, the Vikings would be undefeated..lol just sayin

  19. Derty Ernie says: Dec 19, 2011 7:01 PM

I’m not a vikes fan and even I feel somewhat sorry for them. They need a lot: new QB has a questionable arm, no recieveing core, linebackers got old and lost a few steps for sure and the DB’s, clean house time.
Can’t replace all of them in one draft so this team is definitely a rebuilding mode in two weeks.

  20. cags777 says: Dec 19, 2011 7:28 PM

As a Vikings fan, I can’t blame Jared Allen and Visanthe Shaincoe feeling the way they do. Some guys just aren’t trying on this team. With comments like this, it does make me wonder if a complete house-cleaning might do the organization some good? If not Frazier, then fire Rick Speilman and hire a smart, competent general manager who cares about building from within and expecting results.

  21. jollyjoker2 says: Dec 19, 2011 7:31 PM

they won two games at this point, therefore, who cares. I would rather see some good hight quality draft picks. They need a lot of positions as the talent level is really low on the defensive side of the ball. The DB’s are waving at the receivers and the LB aren’t even close to keeping up or stopping the backs. Also, Shiancoe isnt that good of a player so I don’t know why he is acting like some broody righteous dude. He acts like he is better than the rest because “he cares”. Yo Shiancoe!!!! Applied talent whens games, not some mad hadder. Otherwise, I would hire some b squad guys with tempors. If I had my druthers, I would cut him or trade and go with the 1st round draft pick rookie te who has a lot more talent. He gets open and doesn’t drop balls.

First of all, your grammar is disgusting. Next, the second you start discussing the benefits of losing, you simply cannot win. Fortunately, for the Minnesota Vikings, they still have people on their payroll that care about winning.

Kabul? Tehran? Ibadan? Marabi? Chittagong? Phnom Penh? Benghazi? Havana? Managua?

I know you have serious mental issues with the Vikings and their fans, but putting forth opinions like this just makes you look stupid and biased.

But just to give a little credibility to opinions here…. The cities that make up the Twin Cities metro area have been names All-America cities ten times, including three times for St Paul and twice for Minneapolis. The entire state of Wisconsin has seven, and only two in the last 25 years.

But then again, Billy Bob and his sister/wife aren’t comfortable around paved roads, so I guess it’s all in the eye of the beholder.

This is turning into one of the biggest joke performances all-time for a NFL franchise. They need to do the following:

    1) Get rid of their personnel team and hire a real GM.

    2) Fire Leslie Frazier.

    3) Trade AP for some picks. Cue the haters.

    4) Draft Matt Barkley or RG3. Christian Ponder is clearly a crappy QB who will never be the real deal. The Vikes will never make the playoffs with him when they have to go up against Rodgers, Cutler and Stafford.

    5) Pull their head out of their rear and realize that this is a passing league……draft a bunch of WRs and DBs.

    6) Pray.

This is a four year rebuilding project at a minimum. Get used to losing Queen fans…..it’s going to be that way for a while. But at least it suits you. LMAO.

This place is crowded with a bunch of teenage trash talkers which is ridiculous and have no sense of history. I have been a Vikings fan for 40 years and seen the good, the great and the seldom miserable.

1984 3-13 season I saw the Vikings looked pathetic and heartless because they hated Steckel. This year is a simple problem of a weak offensive line and the defense being on the field too long. They did not give up against the Saints, they were just plain out of gas facing one of the NFL’s elite offenses

When you look bigger picture, 2 horrible seasons in 40 years and 38 competitive ones is an NFL fan’s dream come true. Ask any Lions fan who enjoys a winning season this year after how many other putrid seasons.

I’m a Packer fan and I don’t understand these dbags rooting for the Vikings to go to LA.

You want to replace a long-time rival with the Rams? Nothing against them, but can you name a great Packers v. Rams game? Let’s see there’s a playoff game where Favre threw a ton of picks, Andre Rison’s first game with the Packers, that one game where James Lofton played defense, and the 1967 Championship game. They’ve played ~25 times in the last 30-35 years, and you can count on one hand the amount of times when both teams were any good when they played each other.

First off, the 2nd game of the ’09′ season was on 11/01/09. Thats 25 months ago since the last time the POS lavender Larry’s beat the Pack and they had to use one of the Pack’s greatest players(Favre) to accomplish that.

Since then the Pack have totally embarrassed the vikequeens 4 straight times. Plus since 11/01/09 the vikes number of total wins, including playoffs is 14 while the 4 time SB and defending Champs have won 34 including their 4th SB.

Don’t you realize how piteous it is that to escape the pain of your current inadequacies you’re left with resorting to a few paltry, inconsequential moral victories that happened over 2 years ago?

The difference between Vikings fans and Packers fans is that the Packers fans have nowhere to go except to bother Vikings fans…because the rest of the country could care less whether the Packers or the Vikings win or lose…

and…the Vikings fans have at least shown that their team can go 15-1 and get beat by a playoff team that year whereas the Packers fans team have gotten beat by a Kansas City team that didn’t have anything really to play for.

The only reason the Vikings will never win a Super Bowl is because the NFL couldn’t sell enough TV rights and tickets to see the Vikings play in one…so they have the refs take it away.

  50. pack13queens0 says: Dec 20, 2011 9:57 PM

I want to see the Vikings leave because Minnesota doesn’t deserve a team. They are the only team in the NFL that can’t sell out their home games and thus get blacked out. The other 31 teams all have season ticket waiting lists. In LA, they will get sellouts for every home game even if they’re 0-16. And besides, over 40% of NFL fans in Minnesota are Packer fans anyway.
