Giants’ Victor Cruz: We’re going to throw the ball at Darrelle Revis

New York Jets v New York Giants Getty Images

Giants receiver Victor Cruz thinks he’s going to have a good time visiting Revis Island on Saturday.

Cruz said today that when the Giants play the Jets, he expects to get plenty of balls thrown his way, even if Darrelle Revis is covering him.

Teams aren’t really scared [of Revis] anymore,” Cruz said, via the New York Daily News. “He’s got to earn his money this year. Teams aren’t really backing down. I feel like we’re going to do the same thing. We’re going to go out. Until he physically stops us we’re going to throw the ball on him.”

Giants receiver Hakeem Nicks was asked if Revis is the best cornerback in the NFL, and he paused before answering, “He’s decent.” Nicks apparently changed his mind later and called Revis “great,” but even then he said he thought his own matchup with Revis would be “even.”

So the Giants won’t hesitate to have Eli Manning air it out and throw it to whatever receiver Revis is covering. We’ll see Saturday if that’s a decision that comes back to haunt them.

    WHY?!?!

  5. easyisle says: Dec 21, 2011 4:56 PM

I’d think you may want to throw at the receiver covered by Revis, not at Revis. Otherwise, we won’t be able to tell the NY QBs apart.

  6. howley1 says: Dec 21, 2011 4:57 PM

I wouldn’t advise it. Eli is a pick machine.

  7. earthtopft says: Dec 21, 2011 4:57 PM

Sunday drive in the park for Revis. He just switches on Cruz Control and plugs in his Ipod.

  8. tfbuckfutter says: Dec 21, 2011 4:57 PM

It’s a good idea for Eli to throw at whoever Revis is covering.

At least, it’s a better idea than his usual “throw into three defenders” strategy.

  9. ny82jy says: Dec 21, 2011 4:58 PM

As a jet fan i say i hope they throw it at revis all day. I dont know what Cruz is talking about, there have been two receivers all year that have had good games vs Revis. Stevie Johnson and Brandon Marshall. Johnson and the bills ran a million slants at him and had sucess, The Dolphins hit a few big plays with Marshall. Besides that Revis has shut down everyone as usual. Look up the numbers nobody has put up anything on him. Cruz can say what he wants but as Antrel Rolle would say ” at the end of the day” the giants will be throwing at Cro or to whoever is playing TE for them all day. If they throw at Revis all day you can count on at least one maybe two ints.

  10. austskate says: Dec 21, 2011 4:58 PM

LOVE IT. Please throw the ball at him. In fact, as a Jets fan, I am begging you to throw it at him. Throwing at Revis rather than taking advantage of our lack of depth at CB and Safety is clearly the best approach for the Giants

Revis is the most overrated player EVER.

  12. caseyanthonymunoz says: Dec 21, 2011 4:58 PM

Why not? The Bills and Stevie Johnson lit him up. Regardless, he’s not in the company of Charles Woodson when it comes to making an impact on the defensive side of the ball.

  13. Manbearpig says: Dec 21, 2011 4:58 PM

And Cruz needs to can it. His poor output in last weekend’s game cost me my semifinal matchup.

  15. jdandcoke says: Dec 21, 2011 4:59 PM

these two guys better back up their words. regardless, if gillbride doesnt come out with at least a hurry-up, hes a fool. personally….id go nu-huddle right from the get go….eli will crush them if he’s allowed to keep throwing downfield….even if he throws a pick or two. attack the jets through the air non-stop and the giants win this game. waste two+ quarters trying to establish the run….and lose. its very simple.

  16. waxdaclam says: Dec 21, 2011 5:02 PM

Wow…too many haters on here. In response to the first post on this thread…how many balls did Desean Jackson catch last week? Exactly. As far as the Tebow play goes, Revis made the tackle. He is known for his tackling as well as his coverage skills. Stevie Johnson caught 8 short passes on him. He had two picks against Brandon Marshall. ANY one of you would sign up to have your CBs WORST game be letting up 75 yds. Overrated? Statistically he has had two of the best seasons a defender has EVER had in NFL history. He is the best CB in the game and he is the best defender in the game. Anyone who says he is overrated or cant play or holds obviously doesnt watch Jet games, or your just jealous you dont have him. Cant wait to see the “Revis was holding all game” posts when he shuts down Nicks.

Both moments are amazing! He really is totally overrated. He is a one dimensional cover only corner. He has trouble when he is outsized and he CANNOT tackle. If he could, why does he NEVER blitz?

here come some comments about how he’s so good at covering that they don’t need him to. I will never buy that. Did Deion blitz? Woodson?

    OVERRATED!

  30. wikidpissah says: Dec 21, 2011 5:22 PM

Anybody look at Revis stats in depth and any idiot can see hes one of the most dominant defenders in the game and he has been for years. He has no holes or weaknesses anyone who has the nerve to say hes overated is such a moron and cant possible watch him and his games.

  37. carterious1 says: Dec 21, 2011 5:29 PM

I didn’t realize stevie johnson catching 8 balls for 75 yards against revis accounts for “lighting him up.” Revis simply gave him cushion and came up and made tackles. His standard is just so high that people lose perspective, especially people who only look at stat sheets

  38. jakek2 says: Dec 21, 2011 5:29 PM

how on Earth do you see your computer screen to post with Revis’ balls so firmly planted in your mouth?

  39. ttommytom says: Dec 21, 2011 5:31 PM

Jets have a minimal pash rush. Their LB’s are not good cover guys and without Leonard, they have NO safeties that can cover. They have ONE DB. Don’t throw at the ONE DB.

Did Miami or the Bills beat the Jets throwing at Revis? I wouldn’t call what Marshall or Johnson did in 1 game out of 2 meetings a big deal, considering the Jets won both games.

I’m a Giants fan but I certainly don’t hate my step child Jets. Leave the kid from Aliquippa alone. Revis IS great and Cruz is either throwing a curveball or being stupid. No need to talk.

  40. zonedogz says: Dec 21, 2011 5:33 PM

And the result of that strategy will be….Jets Win! Memo to Victor Cruz – Best to shut your pie-hole before playing against a pro bowler in the biggest game of your season. The Giants don’t need extra motivation.

  41. hiyamaya00 says: Dec 21, 2011 5:36 PM

I hope that hick QB tries to throw at Revis. Even his brother(and I’m not talking about Cooper), is smart enough to not step foot on Revis Island.

  42. tharoostah says: Dec 21, 2011 5:37 PM

This is actually brilliant for Cruz to come out and talk about going at Revis. The Jets and Rex Ryan are so egotistical that they would put Revis on Cruz just to make a point. This would leave a lesser corner (likely Cro) guarding the Giants best receiver in Hakeem Nicks. Brilliant….. they just need to take this further and have Cruz come out and say something like ” I can be Revis one on one on every play… hes not even that good”.

  43. We'reFineThere says: Dec 21, 2011 5:38 PM

  44. lott42 says: Dec 21, 2011 5:39 PM

Revis the Dwayne Wade of football. Gets away with everything and when called on anything becomes mr passive-aggressive. Welker abused him this year when Revis ether tried looking into the backfield, wasn’t ready for the play or was trying to get other db’s in position. We’ll never know because he always has someone making excuses for him. Good player made great by getting Jordan like treatment.

Nicks is a pretty damn good WR, and I dont know why people dont talk about him more, but Nicks is in for trouble Saturday.

  48. lobacz87 says: Dec 21, 2011 5:48 PM

Revis vs. Welker…did you even watch those games?!?!?!?!?! He was the ONLY CB to shut down Wes. Talk about cheating, Wes dove at defenders legs on every play he wasnt running a route…please. Give him his credit. Im sure he is the ONLY in the corner that holds on every play but doesnt get the call. You guys are reaching because you want to hate on a guy who is going to be a Hall of Famer.

  49. nightwalker43 says: Dec 21, 2011 5:49 PM

  50. ny82jy says: Dec 21, 2011 5:55 PM

    @Bowens3181

And its obvious u dont watch any jets games at all. This year in pretty much every game u listed Revis wasnt exclusivly on that one guy, they moved him around. He didnt cover those guys the whole game. Most of those catches sadly are off cromartie and even wilson sometimes. Like i said i watch every game, i know u dont Johnson and Marshall the only two that have had good games on him all year. Look at the in depth stats hes allowed basically nothing all year no matter who hes been covering.

revis= overrated. good? yes. great. no

and for people talking about the johnson game where he only had 75 yds, if he didnt freaking drop that ball in the 4th qtr on the final drive, he has over 100 yds and 2 tds. that drop has nothing to do with revis. revis was owned that game jet fans, dont try to make it seem otherwise.

  64. gronktimusprime says: Dec 21, 2011 6:25 PM

Revis is way overrated, he is decent, sucks at tackling. He had a few good years mainly due to the D line they had which allowed him to cover one on one and he did well, once that D line and overall D got weak like this year, the truth comes out, he has been lit up several times this year, and lives off of the fact that some QB’s in the league are scared to throw in his direction. That will soon change and he will be exposed even more.

  65. eaglesandravens says: Dec 21, 2011 6:28 PM

  67. Kya_Tropic_Fan says: Dec 21, 2011 6:37 PM

Love how Jets fans set themselves up for a win/win argument. When some player gets 100+ yards, it is because they mixed up the coverages. But when some player gets 30 yards, its because Revis shut him down…

  68. johntonioholmes says: Dec 21, 2011 6:46 PM

Revis is the best in the league…at committing pass interference and getting away with it.

I was a Revis fan when he came out of college, but I’ve seen nothing from him that warrants all of the talk.

In fact, Leon Hall was the best corner in the NFL this year, before he got hurt. Since then, it has probably been Ike Taylor.

Revis had one good year; people need to give it a rest.

  69. yankeesjetsknicksrangers says: Dec 21, 2011 6:47 PM

And off course Mr. “At da end of da day” Rolle throwing teammates under the bus every week.

The Giants are a joke organization.

  70. johntonioholmes says: Dec 21, 2011 6:55 PM

He was the only corner to shut down Welker???

Against Ike Taylor, Welker had 6 catches for 39 yards.

In week five against the Jets, he had 5 catches for 134 yards. I saw that game. Revis was covering him for a lot of those yards.

In week 10, Welker had 6 catches for 46 yards. Even if Revis was on him all game, Ike Taylor still did a better job of keeping Welker in check than did Revis.

Don’t even try to say he’s the only corner to shut Welker down because A) Other corners have done it and B) Welker has had good games against the Jets.

I almost forgot KC held him to 2 catches. They probably had Brandon Flowers on him.

Don’t get me wrong; Revis is good. But if he gets away with WAY too much PI. If the officials ever decide to start calling it on him, he’ll probably get benched.

There are a bunch of corners that I would take before him, simply because they shut receivers down without help from the officials.

And I despise the Pats, so I root for the Jets in the AFC East.

  81. dlmcc1010 says: Dec 21, 2011 8:50 PM

Anyone doubting just how good Revis is probably doesnt watch football. Revis has as many plays on the ball (INT’s and batted down passes) as he does receptions given up. No one in the game comes close to shutting a WR down the way he does. Rex Ryan is definitely annoying, but that doesnt mean Revis isnt the best in the business.

Way to keep that a secret! You dumb ass

  83. mikeyveli says: Dec 21, 2011 9:08 PM

Why PASS it towards Revis when you can RUN it at Revis for a TD everytime???

If Steve johnson had a great game on revis I’m sure nicks can do it too. Revis=overrated

  86. mattlion says: Dec 21, 2011 10:02 PM

i’m a pats fan…. and Revis is NOT overrated.

In this day and age of passing offenses and rules benefitting receivers, he’s one of the few true coverage guys out there. He’s beatable, but you’re a lot better off if you’re the Giants working one of your other big guns against Cromartie or trying to attack the Jets’ slow linebackers and safeties.

Asomugha and Samuel have been exposed in Philly. Revis is the best corner in the game, followed closely now by Brandon Flowers in KC.

    frankdatank23 :

Have you been watching football at all the last 3 years? Revis has completely annihilated and removed from games the best receivers in the game, a lot of times without any help. Unless you are telling me Calvin Johnson (1 catch, 14 yards) Vincent Jackson (1 catch, 15 yards), Andre Johnson (50 yards receiving in 2 games combined), Reggie Wayne (1 catch, 1 yard), Steve Smith (1 catch, 5 yards), Roddy White (2 catches, 25 yards), Marques Colston (3 catches, 33 yards), Wes Welker (1 catch for 3 yards, yes everyone with eyes know eric smith blew the coverage) aren’t great receivers then maybe you have a point.

Then you have to factor in that he plays the biggest in the biggest games, playoff games, which includes some from the above Wayne (1 catch for 1 yard, and 5 catches for 55 yards ), Ocho Cinco 2 catches for 22 yards), Hines Ward (2 catches for 33 yards) and arguably his best game against the chargers where they mixed and matched him against Floyd, Jackson, and even Gates and gave up 0 catches for 0 yards, including an INT where he was lying on the ground.

How do you like them apples? Kind of hard to call a guy overrated who everyone other than people who hate the Jets know he is the best in the business, all pro selections and being by far the higest rated corner in the poll of top 100 players voted by the players. The only other guy who is close is Woodson, who makes more impact plays but is less of a true shutdown corner. Nnamdi has been exposed as a joke this year, after going his whole career in Oakland being the best 2nd string wide receiver shut down corner in football (you can call him mr. I only cover one side of the field).

You can look at box scores all you want, but apparently you dont watch the games or bother to find out about them. Yes, anyone can say without a doubt Welker was shut down by far the most by Revis in week 5. 1 catch for 3 yards, thats it! If you dont believe me go back and watch the game or go to the pro football focus website where they analyze this stuff every week.

All I could say is maybe you should try following another sport, like maybe basketball? Your comment doesnt even seem like a lack of football intelligence issue, it seems more like a lack of common sense issue. You listed receivers against the Jets this year that Revis covered for parts of the game. So just because Revis covered these guys for parts of the game you automatically blame him for every single 1 of those catches and yards, regardless of who was defending the receiver on those plays? Hmm, makes a lot of sense to me. Especially those Austin yards on a play that was a TD with 1 on 1 coverage against Cromartie. Or maybe that long pass to Welker in zone coverage where the safety Smith had him deep.

By your idiotic reasoning, each cornerback on a team is responsible for for all the opposing receivers yards in a game as long as he covered him for at least 1 play. So if the Cowboys have 200 yards passing and the jets used 4 DB’s who all at one point covered each receiver, they are responsible as a group for 800 yards passing? Seems like intelligence and math aren’t your strong points!

  90. altoon88 says: Dec 21, 2011 10:30 PM

All the holes in the Jets defense you can exploit, but you choose the greatest DB of all time? Shows how stupid the Giants are, and why you will probably miss the playoffs (again) instead of making noise in it.

Revis can shut Cruz down cause we will let “the sun” shut down Nicks. If you were smart, you would use your “not Kevin Boss” TE to beat us, but he sucks and I think he’s not playing anyway.

Giants fans, get ready for your re tarded QB to have that stupid, disappointed look on his face.

  91. buzzbissinger says: Dec 21, 2011 10:37 PM

You gotta love the Giants, I cannot recall a more obnoxious, arrogant, look-at-me, 7-7 team.

I guess in the NFC East that’s something to be proud of.

  92. nyfan63 says: Dec 21, 2011 11:00 PM

Victor Cruz is a great story this year, and is a legitimate NFL receiver, but he doesn’t yet have the pelts on his pony to be talking smack at a Darelle Revis.

  93. brian2590 says: Dec 22, 2011 12:39 AM

Funny thing is Cruz isn’t even worthy of being covered by Revis. He’ll be on Nicks for the majority of the plays.

  94. yevrag3535 says: Dec 22, 2011 12:43 AM

Cruz is a wimp. He is nothing but talk…..

  97. jetsfan136 says: Dec 22, 2011 8:12 AM

Lot of juice for this game. You can’t ask for anything more than both teams being in it and it being a meaningful game. If you commented specifically to say Revis is overrated, ur kinda dumb…..Plain and simple. Now, the Jets defense as a whole IS overrated this year. Cruz is a fine receiver. Fast and a good route runner. Came out of nowhere too. A far as the smack talk coming from both sides, it makes it fun. Don’t get insulted by it. They say much worse to each other during the game. Physical game like football has some crazy bastards out there and that’s how they get their edge.

    Here’s to a good game.

  98. byrds71 says: Dec 22, 2011 10:29 AM

What happened the last game with the Jets and da byrds? The game plan was to attack the LB’s and safeties, and run the football. Stay away from Revis. What did the Jets Wr’s do against Nhamdi and Asante, other than the one acrobatic catch for a TD by Plax? The Giants would be idiots to attack Revis, just as the best way to attack the byrds is the LB’s and safeties, who are imrovinga long with all the defensive players. So you idiots who think you can attack Revis, or the Eagles corners consistently, go ahead and try it. See if you can throw the ball all game on these guys. Attack the weakneeses until they stop you, that is what you do, Eli will throw picks under pressure, against a good secondary, and without throwing to RB or TE underneath, and running the ball, they will lose.

  99. habsman says: Dec 22, 2011 10:47 AM

Jets fans complaining because another team is talking smack?

    Thats really funny.

  100. bigbluelou says: Dec 22, 2011 12:42 PM

Yeah, I’m sure that’s what they want the Jets to think you know telling the opposing team the game plan. Ok. Giants will run the ball. With Boothe and Petrus in there both RB’s have averaged 5.1 yards per carry in the last 2 games. We will see more of that. Run first.
