Eagles handle Cowboys in anticlimactic game

Eagles Maclin and Jackson celebrate Maclin's touchdown against the Cowboys in Arlington, Texas Reuters

The Eagles were eliminated from playoff contention shortly their game kicked off Saturday because the Giants won.

Dallas’ slight chance at staying alive for a Wild Card spot ended because of the other results Saturday. We knew early that next Sunday’s Cowboys-Giants game would decide the NFC East champion.

In short, Saturday’s Cowboys-Eagles game meant very little.  And it played out that way.

Tony Romo left the game early with a hand injury, and never returned. Felix Jones barely played.

The Eagles won 20-7 in Dallas, finishing off a meaningless sweep of the Cowboys to push the Eagles’ record to 7-8.  The Cowboys didn’t score until a blocked punt and a garbage time score with under a minute left.

Steven McGee replaced Romo and looked like you expect a backup to look. He completed 24-of-38 passes for only 182 yards.

For Dallas, this week is all about Romo’s health. He was seen telling teammates he’d be fine on the sideline during the game, but the team needs the swelling in his hand to go down.

For the Eagles, this late run of convincing wins should only add to the frustration of this season. It points out what an underachieving team they were for the first 12 weeks of the year.

The Eagles had the talent to be a Super Bowl contender, but they are only earning moral victories now.

Eagles fans won’t be finding a playoff appearance in their stockings this year.

  2. blackqbwhiterb says: Dec 24, 2011 7:39 PM

Dallas showed once the game was meaningless the type of character they have-none. Half hearted played like they didn’t care. Next week when it matters I hope the Giants crush them.

  3. rollinghighwayblues says: Dec 24, 2011 7:39 PM

I know a lot of people are going to say the Cowboys lost this game due to Romo being out by my understanding is the sorry excuse for a defense. Go ahead and tell Rob Ryan to go to hell, he is a total asshat and bag of hot air. Highly touted defense my ass.
The defense was poor in every meaning of the word. Almost zero pressure all day (reminded me of the Giants loss two weeks ago) and sorry coverages. The Cowboys D let the Eagles recievers run rampant in the middle of the field all day and it was sickening.
Also, where in God’s name was the Cowboys offensive lineman that are supposed to be grown men? They got shoved around all day like a bunch of soft women.
This team makes me want to throw my television in the fireplace and never watch them again.

Any sport journalists who waste time writing stories about this so-called game are wasting their time. Instead, simply write, “The Cowboys are Frauds.” Nothing else. That sums up their play today and the team as a whole.

  4. 49er33 says: Dec 24, 2011 7:41 PM

Typical Romo, if the game hadn’t been meaningless he would’ve choked and the injury to blame. And had he won would’ve been “elite”. He’s overrated, Giants should win next week unless Eli receivers start dropping footballs like hot potatoes again.

  5. KIR says: Dec 24, 2011 7:48 PM

The eagles are a completely different team when Desean brings the energy and enthusiasm. Pay the man! If they don’t, I’m sure there are at least 20 to 30 teams who will.

  6. KIR says: Dec 24, 2011 7:48 PM

Thumbs of if you’d prefer to see Vick instead of Eli or Romo in the playoffs.

How many Superb Owls have the eggles won?

  8. mikehockhurtz says: Dec 24, 2011 7:48 PM

The silver lining for the Cowboys fans everywhere is that the Dream Team’s season is over while the Cowboys still have life left.

And if the Eagles go into the offseason thinking they have something going for next year, I got two words for you

    Fools gold

  10. howley1 says: Dec 24, 2011 7:51 PM

Realistically the Eagles were eliminated from the playoffs in November. All of that “mathematically” stuff was just too far-fetched to even mention.

  11. eaglesfan94 says: Dec 24, 2011 7:52 PM

It’s always nice to take down a division rival, regardless of whether or not playoffs are an option. Cowboys fans should be concerned with the lack of heart their team showed today.

  12. srg608 says: Dec 24, 2011 7:52 PM

    Hey Rosenthal,

As a pseudo journalist maybe you should at least make a minor effort to hide the fact that you’re loser a$$ Giants fan – it bleeds through every word you write.

  13. gcsuk says: Dec 24, 2011 7:54 PM

I really want the Giants to win next week, but whatever happens, happens. I got my Christmas present of Silent Eagles fans!

See you next year, Mad55555, Graymares, and 7to10for6allday. Maybe next year, your team will win the off-season again!

If that was true, they would be. You are what your record says you are.

    Congratulations Dream Team…

You just won your Super Bowl

  16. mnlittle says: Dec 24, 2011 8:02 PM

Eagles may have won the Meaningless Bowl today but next week they’ll watch the Cowboys play a game that does mean something while they’ll be playing for nothing. Why? Because they couldn’t take care of their business. Makes me laugh! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!

  17. jodave5 says: Dec 24, 2011 8:03 PM

NFL should give refunds for this week 16 BS. How pathetic. $100+ ticket prices for August play. Tired of that shiat!!!!

  18. sinister23 says: Dec 24, 2011 8:04 PM

McGee puts up 180 yards and its typical non starter play, but tebow never reaches those numbers and hes a beast?????

  19. dallassux says: Dec 24, 2011 8:08 PM

Wow so many bitter haters tonight.

  20. srg608 says: Dec 24, 2011 8:09 PM

Superb Owls?? Everyone’s a comedian! Not.

And the Eagles Haters on here, blow it out your ear hole. A sweep of the Cowgirls is always a good consolation prize! Granted, the Birds made too many mistakes earlier in the season to make the playoffs – obviously! But they had the character to finish strong and have looked pretty damn good these last few weeks. Every team but one ends up with the same year end statement – “Wait til next year”!!

  21. georgiaeaglefan says: Dec 24, 2011 8:10 PM

Seems as though Rob has a MOUTH as BIG as his brother Sexy Rexy, both of them are losers. I just wish that the Ryan SISTER’S would shut their mouth, and learn that they are perennial losers, just like Pops Buddy was. They would be good at best as position coaches, but as a Head Coach/Offense/Defense Coordinators they suck.

Robby Boy just got another Beat Down today from the Eagles, that he guaranteed he was going to make them his BITCH at the start of the season. Let’s Go J.J., keep Loser Jason and Hot Rob as your team leaders and also the AWESOME G.M. that the CowGurl’s have on their staff. That way we will always be a loser and a TAX WRITE OFF for you and a stick it to the working class people.

  23. dallassux says: Dec 24, 2011 8:11 PM

Giants fans should be happy. They have one more week to flip flop on their team. This week, Brandon Jacobs is the man and they are winning the super bowl. Next week (when they lose) it will be killdrives fault and whoever else they can blame. Too funny.

The Eagles have won Three NFL Titles. 1947 and 1948 – both by shutouts, and again in 1960. They count just as much as Super Bowls. The first two AFL-NFL championships weren’t even called “Super Bowls” until later; should we take two away from the Packers?

Yep, too funny. At least we have another week. Eagles fans, on the other hand…

Sorry, but Giants fans have been listening to Eagles fans carp for 3 years straight. Talk about “can dish it out but can’t take it”. Sore loser.

  27. bleedgreen4life says: Dec 24, 2011 8:32 PM

Eagles fan here. I just think back and shake my head thinking of the 1-3 record against the NFC West that cost my birds a playoff berth. I got New Orleans winning it all.

  28. phillyphever says: Dec 24, 2011 8:34 PM

Sigh, all this did was saved Reid and Castillo’s jobs for next season. Guess I better find another team to root for since this team isn’t going anywhere next season with those two along with Roseman and Banner are there. And I pity any Eagles fan who thinks this team is gonna make noise next year because as history shows us, they just pull you in when something goes well only to break you heart in the end as they always do.

  29. kdish87 says: Dec 24, 2011 8:36 PM

Does Rosenthal still think the Eagles can win the division at 8-8 if the Giants/Cowboys tie?

  30. mikehockhurtz says: Dec 24, 2011 8:45 PM

Reid keeps his job, they miss the playoffs next year after Vick goes down for a few weeks like every year, and the Eagles fans will be pissed….

    Call me Nostradamus

Nobody asked how many football championships the eagles have won, they said Super Bowls. The answer is zero. Nobody cares how many afl championships the Gurnee Tripplehorns won before the invention of the forward pass. Face it, the philly eagles are a bum team. Dealwithit.jpg

I have to disagree to a certain extent. A lot of people are under the mistaken notion that the Eagles acquisitions set the up for a one shot deal, but that is simply not the case. The Eagles can afford to hold on to almost all of these players for at least another year, maybe two. This strong finish shows the front office that most of the acquisitions were good ones in the long run, and will keep the from shedding some good players. It sucks they won’t make the playoffs this year, but it at least gives us Eagles fans some hope for next year. Besides, it’s never a waste to sweep the Cowboys, given all the trash talk that goes back and forth between Eagles and Cowboys fans.

Every playoff team just let out a sigh of relief when the Eagles were eliminated. No doubt they were disappointing this year but if they got in the playoffs they could’ve been the Packers of last year. Their defense is downright shutting teams down, their oline is really playing well and that high powered offense is finally not turning the.ball over. If anyone could’ve beat the Packers it d be them with there 3 pro bowl cb s, nd great pass rush. All could’ve should’ve would’ve now tho. Hope the front office realizes what they have and don’t make changes. These kids just needed time together.
