Giants will play for division title in Week 17

The Giants were obviously tired of hearing that they were the little brother in New York.

They took out those frustrations on the Jets at the Meadowlands on Saturday afternoon. Buoyed by a pass rush that made Mark Sanchez look even more skittish than usual and a renewed running game in the second half, the Giants took the Battle of New York 29-14 and set up a Week 17 brawl with the Cowboys for the NFC East crown.

It wasn’t a particularly attractive game to watch and the Giants made it much harder on themselves than they needed to by throwing the ball up 13 in the fourth quarter after the Jets fumbled away a chance to get closer on a snap from the goal line. David Harris picked off an Eli Manning pass and the Jets scored a touchdown, but they couldn’t get any closer with Sanchez misfiring before a sack and safety by Chris Canty took the game out of reach.

Tom Coughlin, who preaches toughness to his players at every turn, showed some of it himself after he took a Sean Payton-esque shot to the knee from running back D.J. Ware on the sideline. Coughlin stayed on the sideline to the end and then trotted to midfield for what must have been an awfully satisfying handshake with Rex Ryan.

The Jets are going to have a hard time making the playoffs and, frankly, haven’t done much of anything this season to lay claim to a spot in the postseason. They need to win in Miami and get a bunch of help from outside to mount a third straight run to the AFC Championship Game. If they can’t pull it off, it will be interesting to see what, if anything, it does to change Ryan’s approach in years to come.

After two years ruling the town, he’ll have to figure out how to move forward after the Giants made it clear that they aren’t taking a backseat to the Jets any longer.

As a Bills fan, I pray the Jets keep Sanchez and Schottenheimer

The Jets once again show they are the red headed stepchildren in the NY/NJ market. Sanchez looks awful and this team is regressing under a coach that cannot cash the checks.

Maybe the jets will back into the playoffs AGAIN but this team doesn’t scare anyone.

“after the Giants made it clear that they aren’t taking a backseat to the Jets any longer.”

They never were in the backseat. Seven Championships vs. one, which happened over four decades ago. No contest.

There are many reasons that the futile jets…are celebrating their 43rd anniversary w/o winning everything…No matter how hard rexy has tried to TALK the jets out of their little brother/loser syndrome,,but it didn’t last long.

jets, their coaches, players & fans…all try to attract attention to themselves w/their mouths..Guess that comes from years & years of losing…Always someones wimpy little brother…Now it’s the Patriots, but 20 years ago was the Bills, 30-40 years ago, Dolphins

But jet fans…April is coming soon, and thats when you guys all win your SuperBowls,,with you mouths.

    Anyways….happy 43rd anniversary!!!…losers

Tear all the green down at metlife, because it’s a Blue Christmas in New York!

Interesting I keep hearing how much Sam Bradford sucks and is just another bust, yet Sanchez is “learning the offense.” Maybe the Jets should look at Kellen moore in the second round next year…

Santonio Holmes and the Jets are terrible. As an Eagles fan, it stings a little, but we are ending the season on a great note. Sweeping Dallas is always plus!!

Does Rex ever shut up or at least say anything intelligent? In the press conference he just said that he wanted to “play again”. Guess what, you just did play and you lost. On top of that you’re not making the playoffs. This will make it pretty hard for you to win the super bowl. Good thing you won it the last two years. Oh, wait……..

maybe rob can be the jet’s head coach next year?

  10. titosanoxy says: Dec 24, 2011 5:45 PM

Rex guaranteed a SB trophy 3 years in a row…. Haha congratulations on your trophy Jets! Too bad its Snoopy instead of a Lombardi and a preseason game instead of a Superbowl.

    What a joke. All talk

What a shocking day in the NFL. First, the divinely blessed Broncos and Tebow get T-boned as God inexplicably decides he hates them after all. Then the Giants Cruz to victory (now whose job will he help lose?) upending the two-time SB defending champion Jets. And now the Eagles are laying a beating (again) on the world’s best defence.

    Quite unbelievable.

Well, not really, only to those whose ability to flap their gums is greater than their ability to play football.

I’m pulling for the Giants. Any team that knocks the Dream Team from playoff contention in A-OK in my book. Thanks for the early Christmas present Eli and crew. Couple that with keeping the Cowgirls from the playoffs next week and my 2012 is off to a wonderful start.

First of all Merry Christmas to all my fellow GMEN fans. The best way to shut the yappers of the Jets organization is to flat out beat them. I still don’t know why Jets fans never blame Sanchez. It’s always the 0-line or some other excuse. Time to wake up and realize your quarterback is garbage.

This Giants victory goes to Coughlin. He saw how poorly Eli was playing, was horrified with the interception with about 7 minutes left, and never let Eli do anything with the ball for the rest of the game but hand it to someone. He took no chances at all. And the Giants offensive line did the rest.

The giants are obvi the class of NY. Not that it was ever really up for debate outside of the jets locker room. Whoever commented that the jets should look at kellen moore in the second round is absolutely correct. I think the guy has a chance to be the next drew brees (very accurate, mobile enough, great work ethic, and shorter than a prototypical NFL QB).

    Flex this game now!

  18. grogansheroes says: Dec 24, 2011 6:35 PM

    Yea Giants!!!!
Thumbs up if you want the Jets to miss the playoffs, thumbs down if you want them to make it

  19. bsizemore68 says: Dec 24, 2011 9:04 PM

The best team in New York is the Bills, in Jersey it is the Giants, where does that leave the jets? Some would say the toilet. Bill

  20. bsizemore68 says: Dec 24, 2011 9:06 PM

I say pull for the fish next Sunday, so we can have a break from all of the big mouth jets, at least until one of them sees a camera. Bill

  21. nyg73 says: Dec 25, 2011 11:58 AM

How is it that the g men r the little brother in NY when the jets have not been to let alone won a superbowl since broadway joe. The giants have clearly been the best in NY 4 the past 10yrs @ least.
