Ravens get the job done

Cleveland Browns v Baltimore Ravens Getty Images

In a day of thrilling finishes and playoff positioning, Baltimore’s 20-14 triumph over Cleveland won’t get a lot of attention.

Baltimore once again underwhelmed against a lackluster opponent, but the win does set up the Ravens to clinch the AFC North and  earn a playoff bye next week.

The Ravens led 20-0 before giving up a touchdown late in the third quarter and another midway through the fourth quarter.

The Browns got the ball back with a chance to win the game after that, but couldn’t advance the ball past midfield.

The biggest concern for the Ravens in this game is that the passing game still isn’t working. Joe Flacco averaged only 5.5 yards-per-attempt and threw for 132 yards on the game.

Still, Baltimore has a lot to be happy about it. If they win next week, they will be no worse than the No. 2 seed in the AFC.

If they suffer another road loss, this time in Cincinnati, the Ravens would risk losing the division to Pittsburgh and starting the playoffs on the road.

Is it just me, or have the Browns scored 14 points in every game this season?

  2. trbowman says: Dec 24, 2011 6:39 PM

Exactly. Flacco needs to be carried by his defense.

    Just like Sanchez.

If either Flacco or Sanchez were drafted by bad teams, they’d have been kicked to the curb already.

The passing game also accounted for the Ravens only 2 tds, way to leave that out.

the ravens (dixon) dropped a few balls. and their was a huge pass interference call on torrey smith which was like a 60 yard penalty, could have easily been a 60 yard td.

    stats are for losers.

Steelers afc north champs after bengals beat this sorry ravens team next week! Uhhhh the sweet smell of home field and a bye week…thank you baltimorons!

  9. terrellpryorstattooartist says: Dec 24, 2011 7:35 PM

The receivers weren’t helping flacco at all. If you would actually watch gametape and not just read box scores you would’ve seen some beautiful throws hit recievers directly in the heads before they hit the ground. Way to many drops but you would leave that out of your article

Should be a good game next week, right now. I would give the advantage to the bengals buy I still think the ravens win the division

Well……steelersownyou…is back on line…I thought you may have done yourself a nasty after your loss last week…..

    well Merry Christmas to you……

  13. reedhof20 says: Dec 24, 2011 8:14 PM

This team looks one and done to me. As it stands right now, no way they get out of Cincinnati with a win. 112 on the ground to the Browns? S.D. could have ran them off the field but instead they threw them off. And we saw what Detroit did to S.D. today – I know you can’t compare like that, but this team has played their best football – 11-5 and 1 and done.

  14. reedhof20 says: Dec 24, 2011 8:16 PM

Flacco can’t complete more than 50% against the Browns??? C’mon man

  15. steelersownyou says: Dec 24, 2011 8:19 PM

Haha merry christmas to you also ravenfan820…And you also had a nasty crushing last week…but such is life in the nfl…see you in the playoffs. 2 trains on 1 track heading towards each other….

  18. ravensfan4life52 says: Dec 24, 2011 8:58 PM

this game showed how valuable Quan and Yanda are and that Cam Cameron needs to be fired. we had the same problems in this game that we had all of last year where we got up early and then let our foot off the peddle and almost let the Browns comeback and win it. All of the games that we’ve lost, minus last week, have been because of Cam Cameron. It’s time for him to go.

  19. coop16 says: Dec 24, 2011 9:06 PM

Another great season to be a Browns fan is finally nearing its conclusion. Kind of like hearing your dentist say that he’s almost finished drilling your tooth.

The Browns were a first-year expansion team in 1999, and they’re apparently still a first-year expansion team 12 years later. That must be some kind of record. At this rate of progress, they might become competitive in about 500 years. Thanks for your efforts, guys, you’re really making us proud.

  21. purpleattack says: Dec 24, 2011 10:12 PM

@coop16, I share your pain man. We’ve got the Orioles in Baltimore so we know how it goes. Sadly This division is only going to get more competitive, Cinci got 2 first round picks next year.

  22. bebopa says: Dec 24, 2011 10:27 PM

Unimpressive, next weekend the Ravens play a good team in the Bengals. The Browns game should have been an easy win , but the Ravens do things the easy way.

  23. coop16 says: Dec 24, 2011 11:03 PM

@Purpleattack, you’re absolutely right, and what you’re saying is what has made football my primary sporting interest. Baseball used to be my favorite sport but I barely pay attention to it now … with no salary cap in baseball, the small-market teams are pretty much screwed. I salute the NFL for allowing teams that are not in huge markets (like the Packers, Steelers, Ravens and Saints) to compete. However, that fact makes it even more infuriating that the Browns are unable to compete, year after year … they have no excuse. In baseball you can make the excuse that the Yankees and Red Sox are buying up all of the talent, but that excuse doesn’t fly in the NFL. And yes, it does appear that there’s little hope for the Browns in the near future. All three of the other AFC North teams are MUCH stronger than the Browns, and the weakest of the three, the Bengals, have two first-round picks and something the Browns haven’t had in decades, a couple of young playmakers (Dalton and Green). I guess we Browns fans may as well pitch a tent in last place for the next few years. Anyway, we’ve been here so long that it feels like home.

  24. stixzidinia says: Dec 24, 2011 11:30 PM

I love the excuses. Flacco is a mid-tier QB at best and always will be. He’s hit his ceiling. This isn’t how “all world” teams perform against the kind of teams Baltimore has struggled with. They blew their wad on the Steelers and can’t get up for any other game. And the funny thing is the regular season sweep will be all for naught when the Steelers beat them when it truly counts………like always.

  25. raqaiw says: Dec 24, 2011 11:41 PM

I feel for the Browns fans, I really do. BUT! Have hope because if the Cardinals,Seahawks,Texans, and Lions can turn things around you too might one day. All of those teams had good QBs(Warner,Hasselbeck,Schaub,Stafford) so that’d probably be a good place to start. Having an elite WR (Fitzgerald,A.Johnson, and C. Johnson) also seems to be a part of a winning formula. Look at what Dalton and Green have done for Cincy! McCoy is not the answer.

  26. steelcurtainn says: Dec 25, 2011 12:34 AM

Baltimore is done in the playoffs. Guaranteed! They werent overly impressive against the lowly browns this weekend. I cant even see this team beating cincy after this weekend.

  27. thebrownswillalwaysloose says: Dec 25, 2011 4:20 AM

Whatever stix! That must be you’re rap” name huh? Flacco beat your team down twice this year and, will do so a third time at the bank. How can you talk when your boys barely beat the Browns, Chiefs, Colts and oh no, wait! Alex Smith tore your D up! Hopefully head and shoulders boy won’t intentionally try and bend Ray Rice’s leg backward after the whistle cause he was getting beat all day again. Then again, look what Harrison needed to do once the Browns started threatening. Head shot to Colt Mccoy? Come on man! My biggest issue with the stools isn’t their dirty players – It’s their legions of phoney fans.

  28. icyhuckh20 says: Dec 25, 2011 5:11 AM

the ravens will be ok ,drop passes all day ,we could be the browns but were not,be satisfied that we will sweep the division and be in the super bowl wit the saints,The season wit the ravens is never easy but this is our year .tebows god told me so

  31. youreallmorons says: Dec 25, 2011 8:36 AM

STEELERSOWNYOU…MORON!! Im a Ravens fan so I doubt I was “jockin all up” on the Steelers whatever that means. And thanks for proving my point.

  32. steelersownyou says: Dec 25, 2011 9:02 AM

Youreallmorons…..All ravens fans jock the steelers..smackjab! No steeler fan cares about the ravens jerky..why would a 6 time super bowl champ fanbase ever sweat a 1 time super bowl chump?! God youre dumber than most ravens fans! And thats saying sumthin! Your fanbase & the ravens team are so jealous of us! But I dont blame you. Everyone jocks the top most successful team in nfl history! Eat it chump!

  33. coop16 says: Dec 25, 2011 10:51 AM

@Raqaiw, I agree with you on all points. Although I think highly of Colt McCoy in many ways (tough kid, hard worker), it’s become painfully apparent that he’s never going to take the Browns any higher than fourth place in the AFC North. And our receiving crew is even more pathetic. So yes, we aren’t going to contend until we get a top-notch QB and a top-notch WR. But we’ll be drafting somewhere in the #4 thru #8 slot, and Andrew Luck will be long gone by then. The only other QBs rated as likely first-round picks are Robert Griffin and Landry Jones; I don’t think either one is projected as an elite NFL QB. And there are no receivers in this year’s draft of the quality of A.J. Green or Calvin Johnson, according to the draft sites I’ve visited. So I’m not sure what the Browns can do right now. Punt, I guess … that’s what they usually do, isn’t it?

Seriously, I guess they should just take the best available player, regardless of position. They have holes just about everywhere. Maybe they should build the way the Ravens did — construct an elite defense, then when that’s in place, draft a QB like Flacco as the final piece of the puzzle. (I know Flacco isn’t having a great season, but compared to what the Browns have had for the last 12 years, he looks like Johnny Unitas.)

  34. rayriceisnice says: Dec 25, 2011 11:16 AM

You steelers fans must watch ravens games an awful lot more then your own, last time I checked you almost lost to Cleveland Kansas city, you lost to us twice and the 49ers….were afc north champs in 7 days sorry about your luck. See you in Baltimore. We’re all over you, we were built to beat you. And that’s what we’ve done all year.

  35. youreallmorons says: Dec 25, 2011 1:52 PM

steelers own you quote: “No steeler fan cares about the ravens jerky..why would a 6 time super bowl champ fanbase ever sweat a 1 time super bowl chump?!”

And what is the thread we are arguing in here? Looks to be about the Ravens winning haha. Thanks again for proving my point big guy.

    Merry Christmas

  36. mlbbal52 says: Dec 25, 2011 9:54 PM

Ravens will be fine…most of the teams that win the Superbowl have struggles through the year at some point even the Steelers when they have won theirs, giants were left for dead during the season and beat the Pats, Packers barely got in last year and won it all. Struggling teaches appreciation and that you can’t just show up and expect to win just because you have a lot of talent. It should be a good post season. I agree with some I worry about Flacco at times and we really need Boldin. This team should be ok. Also I am not sure why everyone is calling the Bengals to just beat them next week last I saw the Ravens beat the Bengals in their last meeting…

  37. steelersownyou says: Dec 26, 2011 7:08 AM

Well we did “ALMOST” lose to cleveland & the chiefs. AS IF ALMOST EVEN MATTERS..but you “DEFINITELY” lost to Seattle! And correct me if o’m wrong but an undefeated.team went into kc & lost. The toughest place to play by far in the nfl is arrowhead by far! So that was a good win. If Ravens blow this last game to the bungles, will the 2 times you beat us this year still mean a lot to you fans? Or will ot all be for not?

  38. raviq10 says: Dec 26, 2011 11:06 AM

Week 1: 35-7…who’s ya daddy, btchburgh?
Week 9: oh, yeah – Flacco is!

only one “jockin up in here” is Flacco’s sac’ on pittsburgh’s forehead…
