Tony Romo will be fine, would have returned if Giants had lost

Tony Romo AP

Although Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo had a badly swollen passing hand on Saturday, Romo says he wanted to return to the game against the Eagles — and would have if the game had meant anything to the Cowboys’ playoff hopes.

But because Romo knew the Giants had won earlier in the day — and therefore the Cowboys’ NFC East hopes would come down to their Week 17 game against the Giants regardless of the result against the Eagles — there was no reason for him to return.

I would’ve tried very hard,” Romo told ESPN’s Ed Werder. “No question. I did a little bit, but the coaching staff decided against that.”

The Cowboys are confident that Romo will be good to go on Sunday against the Giants.

They act like he has a broken hand.

  2. wollam11 says: Dec 26, 2011 3:17 PM

They should have let him return. I think the loss to the Eagles has hurt more than just the “L”. Now, NY has the momentum and history on their side when they play again on Sunday.

    Doubt it

  4. dannyduberstein7 says: Dec 26, 2011 3:36 PM

I hope the hand injury doesn’t affect his ability to hold snaps on chipshot FGs…4 years still too soon cowboys fans?

  5. eaglesfan94 says: Dec 26, 2011 3:36 PM

Hooray for Cowboys fans, now they have an excuse on why they got creamed.

  6. nachosnachosnachos says: Dec 26, 2011 3:38 PM

Just because he said he wanted back in the game doesn’t mean he’s okay.

There’s video of him trying to get back into the game when he broke his collar bone as well.

He’s just a natural competitor. This hand thing will still be bothering him come the weekend.

  7. itsnotforme says: Dec 26, 2011 3:42 PM

They can use his sore hand for an excuse if they lose.

  8. cowboysallday says: Dec 26, 2011 3:50 PM

Sign a veteran quarterback just incase romo does go down? I rather see a veteran play than watch McGee again when the playoffs are on the line.

  9. backindasaddle says: Dec 26, 2011 3:50 PM

That hand was swollen up like a balloon. They can’t pretend it won’t effect his throwing and they can’t pretend it’s a non-issue. It’s disingenuous.

  10. dequence says: Dec 26, 2011 3:52 PM

He will find a way to loose just like the past. Bet lots of people would of liked to see him come back against Eagles. Fantasy purposes!

    The title has been corrected…

  12. test2402 says: Dec 26, 2011 4:03 PM

    Tom Tebow is fine.

  13. mtlar37 says: Dec 26, 2011 4:05 PM

As swollen as his hand was, I don’t see how he would have been able to grip the football, much less throw with any accuracy.

  14. mtlar37 says: Dec 26, 2011 4:10 PM

Lol at the Romo haters. He has the 4th highest passer rating in the league behind Brees, Rodgers, and Brady. I’d love to see what those guys ratings would be if they played behind Dallas’ porous offensive line!

  15. Fantasy Football Legend says: Dec 26, 2011 4:25 PM

Yeah thanks for not returning only cost me 500 in my one fantasy league and then another 400 in my pool league.

Hahahaha! And there you go! The good ole passer rating defense lol. Thats only second to “well at least he played with a punctured lung” Too bad there is not an award for that.

You know what Romo doesn’t have in common with those QB’s? How bout a Super Bowl or how bout more than one payoff win.

    Enough already.

  17. trucker2020 says: Dec 26, 2011 4:30 PM

Romo is the 4th rated passer because he has so many weapons at his disposal.Between Miles Austin,Dez Bryant ,Robinson & Whitten, & 5 other WR’s, someone is bound to be open.
Also, there is no way he plays this week @ NY.His passing hand took a direct hit which probably hurts more now than when it happened. Therefore, the Cowboys chances of making the playoffs rests in Kitna’s arm.
    Good luck with that.

That being said, if the Cowboys win on Romo’s arm, the Giants will look like punks.

But if that happens, I’m sure the Giants will cry about calls….never fails

Yeah just sign a veteran CB and cut Terrance Newman.

    – signed, every living Cowboys fan.

Giants will cry about the calls? You obviously haven’t been watching the games. I watched the NYG/NYJ game with my wife, a Dallas fan rooting for a Jets win, and even she was disgusted by the calls. The Giants have gotten more bad calls than I have EVER seen in 30 years of watching the NFL. But it’s easier for you to talk smack than to check the facts. Then again, what should I expect from someone immature enough to call himself “Mikehockhurtz.”

    @mtlar37

Packers O-line has had a bunch of injuries and Romo is no where close to Rodgers.

Romo will choke like he always does.

  26. greymares says: Dec 26, 2011 6:04 PM

Romo did not sit out to play next week. he sat out because of fear, common sence, and the desire to live to see Christmas.

  27. vincentbojackson says: Dec 26, 2011 6:09 PM

Big Ben playing with a broken thumb and a high ankle sprain thinks Romo is soft.

  28. howley1 says: Dec 26, 2011 6:30 PM

“Packers O-line has had a bunch of injuries and Romo is no where close to Rodgers.

Romo has a better career 4th quarter passer rating than Rodgers (102.6 to 95.5). Over twice as many 4th quarter comebacks and game-winning drives (14 to 6), too. And a similar winning percentage as a starter (.618 to .661).

So you agree with me. Thanks. You did another classic Howley deflection. I stated two huge facts RELEVANT to someones previous comment. You decided to pick it apart by only stating I’m an eagles fan. NOT relevant to this article.

Romo zero titles and One playoff win. Rodgers, Brady and Brees…..numerous playoff wins and they all have rings…..sorry facts are facts.

  33. artisan3m says: Dec 26, 2011 10:47 PM

limp Dallas won’t get past the Giants. NY can load up on pass D as the Cowboys running game is all but non-existent now. With a weak secondary, very poor O-line play, and a suspect Romo who will likely re-injure the hand, its just not in the cards for Dallas to win. Even if they do, they will not get beyond the first game in playoffs. If Jones was scared of the Eagles, he ought to be terrified of the Giants. The only injury they have to worry about is their coach who can still out limp a healthy Garrett on his best day.

Kitna was placed on IR with a back problem, don’t think he’ll be playing.
