We knew what we were buying when we bought the shares. We all read the fine print that said that it is basically worthless besides getting an invitation to the annual shareholders meeting ever year. But we didn’t buy it for the little piece of paper, or for the meeting. We love our Packers and so we gave our money to help with the expansion of Lambeau Field. It our way of saying that we love our team and we are proud to be Cheeseheads! GO PACK GO!

Other teams have done similar creative things to generate revenue. The Miami Dolphins have added various “celebrity owners” with a nominal % stake in the franchise. It’s good for a press release, and everytime Gloria Estefan or JLo give a presser, there is always the potential for the Dolphins being mentioned in the conversation. But I think it’s fair to say that neither JLo, or Gloria will be telling us who the next starting quarterback for the Dolphins will be. It’s a glorified ownership stake, that honestly amounts to the exact same thing going on in Green Bay, albeit without the certificate. Gloria can go around telling everyone she owns the Dolphins, and ultimately she has about as much say in the operation of the club as you or I do.

What’s going on in Green Bay is what is known as free market capitalism. The Packers have offered a product for purchase, which they openly admit has ZERO value. But the value is in the eyes of those that purchase the product. If people think a certificate that has your name on it and says you are an owner of the Green Bay Packers is worth $275, then it’s worth $275. But only the laws of supply and demand dictate the value of said certificate. If no one bought the certificate, then it wouldn’t be worth $275, and the Packers would have to rethink the product to get to a point where it sold enough to meet their needs.

Any club can do something similar to this. They just have to be like the Miami Dolphins, can come up with creative ways to market their franchise that meet the needs of their individual franchise. Every franchise is unique in it’s own way. Each franchise should pursue whatever revenue earning gimmick they wish, that is unique to it’s own brand. It’s out there, based on the intrinsic value of each NFL franchise. Ownership of each franchise just has to find out what works for their particular brand and then go with it.

It is obviously the Packer fans are the jealous ones… in a general sense. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t have to always spout off how great their organization is. If you think the Packers organization is really any different than any other organization, you are kidding yourself. The difference is in semantics only. Corporations like Wal-Mart and Exxon have boards too….do you not think what they care about most is making money???

I have never seen a bigger bunch of sad, naive people as Packer fans. If for some reason people started to not go to Packers games, and they got a better deal somewhere else…do you not think they would and could move?

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised with all the jealous responses. Who really wants some ass billionaire having a say in your favorite team? A team with a board, no direct owner is proving to be more consistent than 90% of the NFL. So, “donating” to your team seems to me to be a perfectly sensible way to show our pride. Ask Jerry Jones if he gives a care about his fans, and do you really believe his plastic face answer? How about Daniel Snyder building his own little fantasy over the hill teams? That has worked out great! Packers had 2-3 down years since the resurection in the early 90′s. Can you say that about more than 2-3 other teams. Shut up, leave the little town that could alone. The big city teams are just that, BIG! big market shouldn’t have to care how the GREEN BAY WISCONSIN market funds its team. You can supposedly get better support from huge populations? I am sure you big city wannabes can come up with a way to get your team money? Oh, your fans are fair weather fans, forgot that one! Again, shut your traps,
the Packers and Bears started the NFL. Seeing that the Bears are in Chicago, they are doing ok, but the Pack seemed to find ways to survive and thrive in tiny little 100,000 population Greenbay. Be glad for them!

Hey dumbasses. Every other team in the league can do what the Packers are doing with one small exception. They only need to make their share offering private.

Jerry Jones needs some dough for the new stadium polish? Sell some Cowboys stock to Boone Pickens!

Danny Snyder needs a few more bad free agents?? Call up Bubba Clinton and his cattle futures trading spouse and sell some Redskins stock!

Here’s the deal. The Packers have been publicly controlled for decades. They don’t have some arrogant A-hole of an owner who gets off being in control. Any other team can “print money” by simply selling some paper called stock. This jealousy because Green bay doesn’t have to deal with the Jerry Jones of the world is hilarious.

BTW, I “own” the team since 1997. I don’t see why buying a share of stock is any different than buying some stupid jersey of a player who won’t be with the team in two years, except I get to vote AND got to the shareholders meeting in the stadium where we get tours of the lockers, on the field, the real hall of fame, etc.

Seems to me that my deal beats the crap out of some jersey from china that falls apart int he wash in a couple months.

Bottom line is that every other team’s set-up is actually a joke. You pay money and taxes so a billionaire owner can make money off the team. Or you face the threat of relocation if your owner ever wants to move the team because a new city or state is willing to pay for a stadium for your team. Packer fans donate money voluntarily, and know that the money goes toward keeping a team with a first class stadium, and they do it knowing that an owner isn’t on the other end packing his pockets full of money. The joke is on everyone else. Not Packers fans.

Maybe the other owners should become publicly owned and give up all their profits off of their teams if they want to sell stock. The Packers are the only team with the ownership makeup to be able to do it, so this article is just a waste of time.

For the idiots bashing people buying this stuff. It is a souvenir. Not at all different than spending $275 at the pro shop on something else to throw on the shelf or wall. Nobody hides the fact that it is nothing more than a glorified donation to renovate the stadium.

Not a Packer fan, but I don’t see why I should care if a Green Bay fan wants to buy one of these and put it on the wall.

What’s the difference between buying one of these, or a $275 authentic helmet off of NFL Shop to put on your shelf? They’re both just souvenirs. At least with the certificates, those fans know where their money is going.

The return that Packer fans are getting from this stock is that their team will continue to play in a modern stadium with great facilities for their team. That’s what we want and that’s what we get. Pretty simple, really.

As real as the American money we used to pay for it. It was issued by a major bank and regulated by the federal government. We understand that it has no real monetary value and that was made abundantly clear before we made our purchase. What it does have is sentimental value. Being a packer fan is something that is passed down from generation to generation (not to say that were the only ones with that distinction). I don’t care that my $250 only bought a sliver of a sliver of the team (and yes, it is worth about one 4millionth of the team). I don’t care if my stock is worth any money. It was not intended to make me money. It was intended to help my team expand and sustain future growth without costing the taxpayers a dime. So if you want to call us idiots for spending $250 on a “worthless” piece of paper, I don’t really care because you just don’t understand. Remember, these are the same “idiots” that made it possible for the smallest market in professional sports be able to successfully support a team for almost 100 years while selling out every game for the last 50 years, has another 87,000 people in line for season tickets, while winning 13 world championships along the way. Yup, sounds like a bunch of idiots to me. One thing we are pretty good at though, polishing super bowl trophies. So what’s your story?

Has anyone ever described you as pedantic? You seem very concerned with the technicalities and semantics of “stock” issues.

Technically, this is stock. Just like any other company sells preferred stock, voting stock, non-voting stock, common stock, etc. Owning “preferred stock” in IBM is different than earning “common stock” and owners of one versus the other will find that they have different privleges as well as different values.

Now this Packer stock is very unique in its structure (I won’t pretend to understand the legal details of the structure), but it is legally speaking stock. The team has been very forthcoming in explaining to fans what the stock grants them, essentially nothing, and people buying it know that is not an investment like buying a share of Microsoft is an investment. They buy it for all of the reasons that dozens of people on this blog have already summed up.

I am a Green Bay native, life-long, diehard Packers fan currently marooned in Eagles country. I have never purchased stock when Green Bay has offered it for sale because I, like you, don’t think it’s a good “investment”. I would rather put the money toward buying tickets or paying for a satellite subscription so I can watch the team play. I do however understand why other people buy it and I think it’s great – GO PACK GO.
