Ponder will finish out season as starter

AP

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier wouldn’t close the door last week on Joe Webb having a future at quarterback with the Vikings, but he’s not going to start in the present.

Frazier confirmed the plan is for Christian Ponder to start the season finale against the Bears. Ponder left last week’s game with a concussion before Webb sparked the Vikings to victory. Ponder was back at practice Wednesday.

Ponder has struggled down the stretch with injuries and ineffective play. Frazier made it clear Wednesday Ponder is still the starting quarterback for now and next year, but the team wants to do a better job getting Webb involved with a “package” of plays designed around his talents.

  1. Webb is NOT a starting QB in this league. But he’ll be a GREAT backup. Ponder has all of the tools, he just needs time and experience in addition to a solid O-line and some real WR’s.

  2. @blazoo37….You’re a troll at best.

No lie…I saw Ponder sauntering around by himself at the Mall of America on Monday. His lip was split open and he had a glazed over look on his face. Concussion-like symptoms? Possibly?

  3. I have little faith in my Vikings these days– organizationally it’s a mess. Wilf doesn’t seem to understand that you hire a GM and let him have final say on personnel. It’s not rocket science, yet Wilf consistently has undermined the personnel department by treating every coach he hires like it’s Bill Belichick. Frazier needs to get better at coaching and stop hurting the team by, for example, lobbying hard for Donovan McNabb. Until he can win games, he has no business getting into the personnel side. Try and hire a D-coordinator that knows what he is doing, for example!

I saw enough from Joe Webb last year that I would have loved to see him start the season off. If he kept winning, great. If not, Ponder by mid-season. Instead, just more wasted opportunities and confusion by the purple and gold. Webb comes out and wins games, period, and while other teams have seen success this year with similar QBs like Tebow and Skelton, the Vikings just don’t seem to *get* it.

Wilf, it’s not about how much money you throw at the team, its’ about an organizational structure that can breed success.

Yeah, all they need is an o-line, wr’s, younger defesnive lineman, linebackers and defensive backs and a new coach and gm and stadium and they’re right back in the thick of things

  5. Every time I watch Ponder play I wonder if the Vikes ever actually watched an FSU game tape and if they did, how did they convince themselves Ponder was a franchise QB? I’m not saying he has no potential but everything he does as far as the bad decisions and the wildly inaccuracy were par for the course during his college career.

Well since personally I cherish the trophies I won playing sports over ones that are won by others that I just watch on TV, I am cool with that.

  7. Say what you will, but Webb is a one-trick pony and not a starting NFL QB.

Ponder on the other hand has the tools and is VERY reminiscent of another Vikings QB from the early 90’s who had similar potential by the name of Rich Gannon. The Vikes gave up on Gannon way too early and in turn had a carousel of QB’s to follow.

Gannon went on to play in 4 Pro Bowls, be named Pro Bowl MVP twice, be names AFC player of the year 3 times, be named the 2002 NFL MVP, start in Super Bowl XXXVII and set many NFL records.

Ponder WILL succeed in this league whether he plays for the Vikings or not. Webb on the other hand will be a career backup at best.

  8. Don’t get ahead of yourself. Probably only a 40% chance that Ponder “finishes out the season”. Whether he starts the game or not.

  9. Webb is probably the best athlete on that team, or is tied with Harvin. they need to play him. somewhere. don’t bench talent like that.

i think the vikings have finally figured out the Rudolph is a superstar TE in the making, and Shiancoe is useless.

  10. Why?

He has made more mistakes on the field than Joe Webb.

This could be a quarterback controversy, but Tim Tebow is not in it!!!!

That’s a bold statement. You think they are set at quarterback and have enough depth at RB and tight end?

  13. I didn’t think much of Ponder at FSU, and was wonder how he became a #1 pick in the first place. He looked like a 2nd rounder from the games I saw him play. A true reach by the Vikes in my humble opinion.

  14. Give Ponder a decent offensive line (he doesn’t have one), decent wide receivers (he doesn’t have any) and decent tight ends (Shiancoe is a joke and Kyle Rudolph has potential but is not a threat yet), then you can judge Ponder. Aaron Rogers couldn’t do a thing with this gross lack of talent…………………………..And oh my God-the secondary, we’ll save that for another day, I don’t have near enough time to rag on them, they’re like the Visa card-they’re everywhere the football is not!!!!!!!

Oh please! That is the greatest example yet of intellectual dishonesty left by a purple toad! Everybody knows all you lavender Larry pukes are about is getting a Lombardi so you can thumb your poop stained noses at the Green & Gold faithful.

Was it scrapbooking you won your so-called cherished trophies for, or was it for your famous jello salad?

  17. The only reason I think Ponder gets the nod is because Leslie already knows what he has in Webb. Wouldn’t you rather give your 1st round pick a chance to finish the season when winning doesn’t matter?

  19. Let’s be real here. Although Web is a fantastic Athlete he isn’t a NFL QB, not to say that he couldn’t but he is raw. Ponder on the other hand does have the tools and seems to have the football intelligence to make it as a pro QB.

BUT!!!! He will not be successful until we get a solid O line that has worked together for at least a year as it takes time to develop chemistry on the O line so each person knows each others responsibilities and traits. I highly doubt Ponder is going to be the next Brady or Brees, but he COULD be a solid QB such as Hasselbeck or Romo (No matter what you say Romo is not elite). But the key is to have a solid O line that gels together. That will take at least 1 or 2 years. So peeps, don’t get your hopes up, we’re going to be a .500 team for at least a couple of years.

Psssssst… he was talking about people like you.

  21. nbcstinks:

The Vikings gave up on Rich Gannon too early? Really?!?!?!

He was 27 and had been in the league 6 years when the Vikings gave up on him!! He didn’t even have a good NFL season until he was 34. By that account, the Vikings just need to give Christian Ponder 11 more years to develop and they’ll be SuperBowl bound! Woo! Can I buy my tickets now?

  22. Webb looked good against the Eagles last year… then had a mediocre showing.

This year he outplayed Ponder during the pre-season. Also in his regular season appearance he has shown signs of development.

In my eyes he is clearly further along than Ponder. The only thing up for debate is who has the greater upside.

At this point it looks to me as if the coaching staff and personell department are trying to justify their reach in the draft to get Ponder.

There has not been a true open contest for the starting QB position. It is just the people responsible for drafting Ponder looking to protect their careers.

I believe that Webb will develop into a starting QB… it just won’t be with the Vikings.

  23. If I owned the Vikings, this is what I’d do. Before I start I will say that I absolutely love Jared Allen and think Ponder looks like a real winner.

Trade away Ponder and Jared Allen. I honestly think you could get a 1st rounder or elite player for each of them. Convert to a penetrating 1-gap 3-4 defense like Houston uses. We are in a passing division and that is what we need to stop our opponents.

Rebuild the team around Joe Webb.

  24. ranksarot says: Dec 29, 2011 1:01 PM

I guess Frazier doesn’t care about winning. Otherwise he would start Webb…
    _____________________________________

Wrong. This isnt the Philadelphia Eagles, who only care about winning regular season games. Frazier is thinking about years down the road, when Ponder can do something relevant.

  25. The first two games I saw him play I was impressed and thought the Vike’s had something. However, I’m not sure now.

I suspect his overall arm strength is lacking and he appears to play short? He is listed at 6’2 but he plays more like he is all of 6 and doesn’t see well over the offensive line. Thus, the roll outs.

Just curious that if Mr Griffin is availble at number 3, they don’t make a move. If they do, he will not be sitting on the bench as a development player thats for sure. Only then will we know the Vikes assessment of Ponder.

    The Egirls don’t want a Lombardi……really?

And just what exactly is it that Frazier is thinking about that Christine Pondexter will do “years down the road” that’s relevant?
