Rex Ryan expects Schottenheimer back with Jets

Buffalo Bills v New York Jets Getty Images

Jets coach Rex Ryan can envision a scenario where offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer doesn’t return to the team this year.

“Do I expect him back?” Ryan said Friday. “It’s probably 50-50 on that because I think there is an opportunity for Brian to get a head coaching job this year.”

If that doesn’t happen, Ryan says he “expects” Schottenheimer will return to the Jets.  Those words were even stronger than what Ryan said earlier in the week about Schottenheimer.

There’s not much else Ryan can say right now, but we suspect this wasn’t just coachspeak. The Jets think highly of Schottenheimer, even if the Jets fanbase doesn’t.

While Schottenheimer is the most logical candidate for a scapegoat in New York, we wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Jets stayed the course.

And now our daily Rex feed….

Thank you Rex! You have just destroyed my New Years!

is Rex serious? Enough with being friends and the guy that has to be liked. This isn’t knew news about Shotty being bad. Fans have been screaming for him to be fired for awhile. Sanchez had 59 throws in 1 game. Fire Shotty and have him take Wayne Hunter with him.

  5. freewayjim says: Dec 30, 2011 4:00 PM

Do Schotty and Sanchez have compromising photos and videos of Rex (not that he’d probably mind) or is Rex just THAT stubborn?

Yes, and let’s hope it’s with the Jets ! Then we won’t have to hear your mouth perpetually blabbing uncontrollably.

  7. oscojoe says: Dec 30, 2011 4:04 PM

There are 53 players + 8 or more coaches that are scapegoats.

Come on Man these are the Yet’s!

  8. slickmarine says: Dec 30, 2011 4:05 PM

I just don’t get it. The guy in charge of developing Sanchez isn’t doing his job. OCs don’t normally throw 60-something passes per game and not many smart ones are going to get pass-happy with an (as yet) undeveloped quarterback.

Is there someone out there that really think this guy is good?

  9. austrianpanther says: Dec 30, 2011 4:11 PM

That brings up an interesting question! Whi IS the New York Jets quarterback coach anyway???

  10. richm2256 says: Dec 30, 2011 4:12 PM

Look, the Yets have fallen flat of their coach’s Super Bowl promises twice already, and are on the cusp of not even MAKING the playoffs this year…..

the fan base is going to want to see someone’s head roll, who can blame them, and ol’ Woody is going to have to give it to them.

If push comes to shove, do you REALLY think Rex is going to protect this guy?

Ryan & Sanchez (for THIS year) are safe, Schottenheimer better hope someone is stupid enough to offer him a HC gig somewhere.

  11. cubancigar10 says: Dec 30, 2011 4:20 PM

    Jabba the Rex has spoken!!!

  12. caseyanthonymunoz says: Dec 30, 2011 4:21 PM

Did you know the Jets made it to the AFC Championship two years in a row? That must be the greatest accomplishment in sports history because that’s all I ever hear from Rex, Sanchez, and the good people from New Jersey. Championship dynasties can’t compare to losing the playoffs.

  13. sundayisthebestday says: Dec 30, 2011 4:43 PM

Keeping Schotty is monumentally stupid. Sorry Jets fans…

  14. backindasaddle says: Dec 30, 2011 4:46 PM

Schotsy is one of the boys. He’s buddies with Tannenbum and Fat Rexy. He’s “made” and unless Woody demands he be fired he’s not going anywhere. As far as him getting a HC job somewhere….I’d like see a whole lot more evidence of success in his offense before giving him the car keys to my team. I don’t think he’s done anything to distinguish himself or show he deserves to be a HC in the NFL. Maybe at some point in the future but at this point in time…no way.

  15. xsorethumbx says: Dec 30, 2011 4:46 PM

Rex is the best. Since he declared the Jets just need to win their games outright, the team has dropped 2 of 3.
Then again, all the free agents want to play for him after Hard Knocks just look at who they signed this year.

  16. wtfru2 says: Dec 30, 2011 4:50 PM

Who’d want this sucker for a head coach, he can’t even handle the coordinators job worth a damn. Can you imagine him screwing up both sides of the ball?

  17. austrianpanther says: Dec 30, 2011 4:53 PM

Wrecks Ryan and Jets fans are all about the talk

The reality is, the Jets have as many AFC East titles as the Houston Oilers

  19. cardinalscouldbeworse6666 says: Dec 30, 2011 5:19 PM

I have a better chance of poking Charlize Theron on Mars while Albert Einstein and Napoleon cheer me on than Marty has of landing a head coaching job. I think all these years swallowing toe jam is starting to rot Rexy’s noodle.

  20. elwaysbrain says: Dec 30, 2011 5:28 PM

Head coaching job? He should not even be allowed to hand the players Gatorade. His offense has been absolutely terrible, and not only that, the playcalling has been the worst in the entire NFL, on top of that he failed to adjust to that. He doesn’t know how to utilize his players, at all. When you have a good defense and a good running game you don’t throw the ball 60 times with a QB like Sanchez.

Nobody would offer the guy a job as a coordinator. Let a lone as a headcoach. Absurd. If not for his name he wouldn’t even be in the NFL.

  21. rexryantheblowhard says: Dec 30, 2011 5:40 PM

This is fantastic news.. With Schotty at the helm, the Jets will go 4 straight years without a Super Bowl..

In other news.. Rex still loves feet.

  22. twardyyy says: Dec 30, 2011 5:40 PM

    austrianpanther –

you forgot the Colts. They’ve appeared in multiple Super Bowls..

  23. turdfurgerson68 says: Dec 30, 2011 5:48 PM

Let me try posting this, AGAIN:

I’m sure I speak for all NY Jet fans when I write: SCHOTTY MUST GO!!! SCHOTTY MUST GO!!! SCHOTTY MUST GO!!!

  24. twardyyy says: Dec 30, 2011 5:49 PM

And also, the Jets have a horrible offense. Sanchez isn’t a good QB at all but that could also be because Schottenheimer hasn’t helped him develop at all. He’s a horrible OC and if a team wants him as a HC, then that team has the dumbest front office in the NFL. I’d be shocked if someone hires him as an HC and then I’d probably die of laughter as the team finishes with a below .500 record. Now that I think about it, please someone hire this guy so he can be out of the NFL in 3 years (anybody thinking Dolphins?)

  25. thetooloftools says: Dec 30, 2011 5:58 PM

I think the Jets are trippin’ if they think Shotty is going to get a head coaching job. What on his resume would make an owner or gm think he is THE MAN, when the Jets look like a grease fire.

  26. emmac13 says: Dec 30, 2011 6:08 PM

Question is: Does Rex expect to be back?

  27. riverhorsey says: Dec 30, 2011 6:23 PM

I’f fire Sanchez before I’d fire Schottenheimer

  28. jredshoes says: Dec 30, 2011 6:28 PM

Also forgot Chiefs Austrian panther. They lost to GB and beat the Vikings. Great list

  29. worldwidebleater says: Dec 30, 2011 6:33 PM

He expects to win the Super Bowl every year too. How’s that workin’ out?

  30. zinn22 says: Dec 30, 2011 6:38 PM

People give Shotty crap. But he has done an amazing job with a terrible QB. With defenses completely disrespecting the pass and a QB who is incapable of playing at a NFL he has done well.

The entire offense is designed around keeping Sanchez from making game changing mistakes. Despite that Shotty has done a very nice job of usingt he run to set up play action passes especially at the goal line.

The OC is always blamed. Hackett did an great job with the Jets but ook all the blame. The same thing si happening now with Shotty.

  31. nyjalleffingday says: Dec 30, 2011 6:57 PM

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was lying, intentionally avoiding a media firestorm before what could be the most important Jets game this season, but if he’s being sincere, he’s gotta take off the blinders, Schottenheimer is absolutely awful.

  32. nyjalleffingday says: Dec 30, 2011 7:45 PM

    @Zinn22

“People give Shotty crap. But he has done an amazing job with a terrible QB.”

Uh, what? Stop right there. Do you even watch Jets games? What part of making Mark Sanchez throw 64 times constitutes “amazing?”What part of the Pittsburgh goal line fiasco constitutes “amazing?” What part of only once having a sub 16th ranked offense throughout his entire tenure constitutes “amazing?”

The guy is a fool, the Giants safetys played 5 yards ahead of the first down marker for a large part of the game. He couldn’t coordinate to save his life and he shows it nearly every Sunday. When the guy is on, he’s on, but that almost never happens.

new york jet fan. predictions many made of the jets mediocrity seem kinda right now. and playoffs and super bowls are not the same. but if someone says the jets are horrible and you know they accomplished something in the last two years that very few teams equalled or exceeded, you can and should ‘pipe up’ about it. how is it that you people can’t get that?
over the last 43 years ALL teams have exceeded the jets accomplishments. who cares? i care about the next game (next year) against new england, the ravens. i’ll care about the rest when we’re up to it.
(not everyone thinks like rex but it’s been pretty great to have him too.)
