Meltdowns by Sanchez, Holmes kickstarts long offseason for Jets

Getty Images

In the end, all of the Jets’ playoff scenarios didn’t matter. This mediocre squad wasn’t good enough to stop their late season tailspin.

Miami ended the Jets’ playoff hopes 19-17 in a game that included many memorable images in the fourth quarter alone:

1. The Dolphins capped a ridiculous 21-play, 94-yard drive that took up more than 12 minutes of action to take the lead. When the Jets defense needed a stop, they simply couldn’t get one.  The Jets offense put the defense in a bad spot all day, like they did all season.

Still, the Jets defense gave up a huge drive at the wrong time, like it did for much of the season. New York finishes 8-8 on the year.

2. Jason Taylor beat D’Brickashaw Ferguson around the edge and hammered Mark Sanchez in the back midway through the quarter. Sanchez tried to throw the ball away and it was intercepted by Randy Starks. The Dolphins took a nine-point lead a few plays later.

That was a great lasting memory for Taylor against his former team in Taylor’s final game as a pro.

3. On the next Jets drive, Mark Sanchez got the Jets in the red zone before throwing his third pick of the day on a toss behind his receiver. He was erratic all afternoon, with numerous misfires on routine throws. His three interceptions were all bad decisions and led to points.

The Jets played to avoid the big mistake, and Sanchez made three big mistakes.

At the point of that interception, Sanchez had 127 yards on 25 attempts. Plaxico Burress and Santonio Holmes had 15 yards combined at the time. Burress and Sanchez padded their stats in the following minutes, but the game was essentially over.

4. Holmes, who didn’t have a catch on the day, was caught by CBS cameras yelling at a teammate in the huddle with a few minutes left. It’s uncertain what happened, but Holmes then left the game and sat on the bench without his helmet on. He didn’t even watch what was going on.

Consider that: The Jets’ season was on the line and Holmes wasn’t in the game or even paying attention.

Something tells us that Holmes won’t be a captain next year.

Something also tells the Jets will have to consider examining options at quarterback other than Sanchez.

When THE chips are on the table, the Yets can’t win their way into the playoffs!

Still ain’t won nothin’ YET YET YET !!!!!!!

You Yets fans still believe in the Prom King?????

How ‘bout YOU, Rexy, you still believe Sanchez is your man?
You just KNOW Schottenheimer isn’t the one leaving town after THIS game. Go ahead Woody, BLOW THIS TEAM UP and start over again!

By the way, did you Yets fans take a look at New England’s game and see how REAL teams do it?

Rex is ordered to clean out the O staff. He refuses.
Rex and entire staff get the door. That way he still looks like a noble guy taking one for ‘his guys.’

It’s all about Rex. Until it isn’t.

Sanchez is toast, too. But he dates Kate Upton, so what does he care?

MYami Dolphins may have played them selves out of a top 10 pick, but spoiling the Jets season was totally worth it. I said before and I’ll say it again, NY Jets are overrated, and the phins are a better team than their record indicates.

Am I the only person who looks at the Jets and thinks their record was way better than they were as a team? There’s nothing impressive at any position and Revis wasn’t as spectacular as he has been the past couple seasons. I am shocked they were in the hunt til the last weekend of the season.

  17. lostsok says: Jan 1, 2012 4:43 PM

Time to SERIOUSLY re-think the QB position on the Jets.

  19. burm61 says: Jan 1, 2012 4:44 PM

And Rex Ryan has completely left the fun and disguised defenses we all loved to see from Baltimore and his first year in New York.

  20. jeromesimpsonsforehead says: Jan 1, 2012 4:44 PM

I’m on Holmes side for once. This isn’t Keyshawn getting 5 rec. a game and saying get me the damn ball, this is an equally talented WR literally not getting the ball. Even once. If I were him I would be yelling at my QB too for being incompetent and wasting a year of my career. And Holmes never shouldve been a captain to begin with, that was Rex’s awesome decision. If the team won’t have you be part of the team, literally, then why are you going to be part of them?

  21. aaronitout says: Jan 1, 2012 4:44 PM

He is a low-character player – but the JETs seem to specialize in collecting them.

  37. bawston1 says: Jan 1, 2012 4:51 PM

No, this can’t be. According to fat Rex he stated that the Jets were Super Bowl bound prior to the opening of the season.

With 2 minutes left Santonio Holmes took himself out of the game, not injured.
Rex was clueless why. Told them to ask Santonio,
    Nice captain you got there.

Anyone who watched the Hard Knocks with the Jets knows that Sanchez is nothing but a spoiled immature little brat. His complete a total disregard to show any respect to the people around him that have a chance of helping him progress is totally evident in his poor play and will eventually cause him to become the second stringer he really is anyway.

  48. worldwidebleater says: Jan 1, 2012 4:55 PM

  49. thejuddstir says: Jan 1, 2012 4:57 PM

The Jets being 8-8 isn’t any surprise to the majority of NFL fans, so why is it to the experts and the media? Probably because the experts drank the Rex Ryan kool aid all year long (2-3 year actually) and believed ole’ Rex everytime he “guaranteed” the jets would win, would make the playoffs, would win the superbowl, yada yada yada. I think if the media and the experts would treat Rex and the Jets like the “boy who cried wolf” and didn’t rush to publicize every sneeze from Rex, they would then be able to analyze the team more objectively. The Jets just aren’t that good. They got into the playoffs 2 years ago becuz the Colts laid down for them. It would be nice to not have to listen to either of the Ryan brothers until AFTER they have actually accomplished something.

  51. nflfan1 says: Jan 1, 2012 4:57 PM

This article sums up this “TEAM” altogether. Never have I seen a group of players talk so much that have done so little. I respect Ryan as a D Coordinator but as a head coach I think he’s in over his head. He APPOINTED people team captains because their teammates probably wouldn’t have elected them otherwise. Holmes? Sanchez? Talk about forcing the issue. The Patriots are down 21 in the first half and they come back to win as a team. The Jets have a chance to still win the game down by a few points and Holmes sits out because he’s not getting the ball enough? I don’t care how they try and spin this, he’s a football player. They needed to win or go home. Even if he WAS hurt he should be out there giving it his all. This organization as a whole is a joke starting from the top on down

DE Dave Tollefson of the Giants is their special teams captain and *5th* pass rusher, behind Tuck, JPP, Osi, and OLB-DE Kiwi. He’d be the starting DE and primary pass rusher for the Jets.

What? Funny to see Rex’s delusional attitude has trickled down to its fans.

    Mark Sanchez is atrocious…..A-T-R-O-C-I-O-U-S.

When the Jets best pass of the game and longest pass as well comes from your rookie WR who sticks a gorgeous pass in the face of a rushing Cameron Wake, that’s saying something.

As a Giants fan, I actually feel bad for Jets fans that this guy has pretty much cost your team a whole bunch of games this year and a playoff berth. But then my sympathy quickly vanishes when delusional Jets fans try to defend that sorry excuse for a QB by blaming the OC or saying he has an injury.

If anything the OC should walk, if he has any chance of a job offer anywhere else, walk before that dude ruins your career. Sanchez stinks in all facets. Oh BTW, he’s just as weak in mental make up as he is in physical attributes.

Throw all the stats you want out there(2 AFC champ games ) but he fails my EYEBALL TEST and after numerous retrys, he still fails badly. Jets fans you don’t and won’t have a serviceable QB, let alone a franchise one, nothing and I mean nothing will change that dud into something decent.

    I’m out.

  71. gimmeabruschi says: Jan 1, 2012 5:27 PM

And not only is there no SB win, no division win (yet again) and no playoffs, but they don’t even end up with a winning record.

  91. dlmcc1010 says: Jan 1, 2012 6:42 PM

Pete Carroll was right on the money when he said this guy should not have entered the draft yet. I hear about what a hard worker he is but at the same time I dont see improvement. What kills me is the decision making with him. Whether it was taking that Safety against the Giants, or the amount of terrible INT’s this guy throws, it has all the makings of a guy clearly not mentally cut out for the job.

This is not to excuse Holmes, who is a turd and should never have been chosen as a captain. But the Jets have been winning despite Sanchez, not because of him. Its time they admit that to themselves
