Washburn could be the wild card in Philly

Tennessee Titans 2010 Headshots

With rumors and reports swirling that Steve Spagnuolo could land in Philly as the defensive coordinator if/when (when) he’s fired as the head coach of the Rams, there’s an important factor to consider regarding the possible return of Spags to Philly.

Defensive line coach Jim Washburn and Spagnuolo may not be able to co-exist.  Washburn, we’re told, is wired tightly and requires a fairly wide berth.  His players love him because Washburn spends so much time and effort trying to get them stats, even if a sack-friendly approach like the “Wide Nine” (Jason Babin has 18.0 and Trent Cole has 10.0) invites running games to gash the interior of the defense.

There’s a theory making the rounds that Spagnuolo wouldn’t want to take a job in Philly if Washburn stays.  And coach Andy Reid may not want to dump both defensive coordinator Juan Castillo and Washburn.

So don’t pencil in for Philly the ethnic name the surely gets routinely misspelled when written in graphite, ink, or any other liquid used for communicating in document form.

Well, you could see Washburn and Howard Mudd take jobs with whatever team hires Jeff Fisher. Then, Reid hires Spags and moves Castillo back to coach the O-Line.

If Spagnuolo is fired he’d have his pick of several DC openings and maybe a shot at a head coaching gig. Why would he chose to go to a team that’s going to hamstring him be picking his staff for him?

Sorry Wash, you’re not gonna get in the way again of the Eagles getting a real DC. Say hi to Fisher for me.

If Andy Reid goes to Jeffrey Lurie and says he can’t hire Spagnuolo because Jim Washburn can’t work with him, Lurie should tell Reid that he can take Washburn and Castillo along with him when he leaves.

    Ridiculous.

The article implies Reid will be the coach next year. I tuned everything out thereafter. Andy Friggin Reid.

I want Washburn out of here either way. Who does this guy think he is? First year in Philly and he’s chewing out one of our longtime coaches on the sideline. Extremely unprofessional and I’m sure it caused some degree of a dichotomy between the offense and the defense this year. He also hamstringed Castillo by forcing the d-line to employ the porous Wide 9. Peace Jim. You have zero accolades anyway.

Spags could just as easily be reunited with his old d-line coach from his G-Men days in Mike Waufle and replace Pumpkinhead in Oakland.

It would be a venerable “Dream Team” of coaching!

washburn is the best dline coach in the NFL, he made late titans draft picks real good which got them paid elsewhere…aka antwan odom, travis laboy, randy starks, jason babin etc
