Dolphins reportedly have interest in Mike Pettine

New York Jets Practice AP

There has been a lot of speculation that the Dolphins could show interest in Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer in regards to their vacant head coaching position.

That may be true, but the Dolphins may be more interested in the other Jets coordinator.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports Miami has “some level of interest” in defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. The Miami Herald also lists Pettine as a potential candidate for the Dolphins job.

Pettine took over the playcalling on defense for Rex Ryan this year. (And none of his players quit on him.)

Miami’s coaching search figures to take off this week. Despite speculation they would go after big names, it seems like the team is more likely to go the “rising coordinator” route because of the presence of G.M. Jeff Ireland.

UPDATE 9:21 a.m. ET: Florio and Peter King talked about Pettine and other head coaching candidates last night, including a surprise candidate in Jacksonville.

Miami do yourselves a favor and stay away from this loser organization! Stay away from anything they have!

Whichever member of the Dolphins’ staff showed interest in Brian Schottenheimer should be fired.

wow…. it seems like the Phins shouldn’t be going the cheap route and should uncork the wallet to get a serious coach and a serious QB…..

You mean the guy who’s defense gave up a 21 play, 96 yard TD drive against our Matt Moore-led offense with no Reggie Bush and no Jake Long?

    Sounds perfect?

How in the world is Brian Schottenheimer a head coaching candidate?

Shouldn’t you have to, you know, accomplish something before you get to be a head coach?

Pettine isn’t much better. That’s an awful lot of defensive talent you’ve got there to be giving a up a 96 yard drive to the Miami Freakin Dolphins with your season on the line.

I don’t really see the Rex Ryan coaching tree bearing much fruit. At least if one of these guys gets a job, maybe they can hire Rex as a DC after next season.

i would NOT get a Jets coach if i were Miami, they may be decent, but i feel they need an offensive coach who’s good, Schottenheimer, isnt that in my book.

    Ireland + Ross = disaster.

I’m on the fence about Jeff Ireland……. there’s a reason he’s still around. The turn over of the dolphins roster the past few years has gone pretty darn well, for the most part.

But if keeping him means bypassing any legit coaching options……….

As a frustrated, now former Dolphin season ticket holder, I feel the same as all quality coaching candidates. As long as Ireland, Peterson or Ross are a part of the organization, I don’t want anything to do with them!

Perhaps Fisher to JAX to help with the team relocation. After holding Oilers together during move to TN, he has the experience required.

After all, he is a CA guy, and the Jags could/should be sent to LA by the new owner.

    btw,
Odd Jeff stayed out of the studio this season, he loves the cameras.

fisher, jay gruden, cowher, crennel, billlick, john gruden, eric mangini, steve mariucci or about 25% of the college coaches would be a better idea. Ireland is not as bad as many claim but if he causes Ross to hire or influences the hiring of a “lesser” coach, he needs to go. The bottom line is simple: the new coach needs to be better than Sparano…and the guys mentioned in the article are not.

Hire him and the city of Miami may burn that stadium down….

    “in regard to”? Fine.
    “regarding”? Even better.
    “in regards to”?
That’s a $150 fine from the grammar police.

Pettine is a great choice for the job. He has all the characteristics of a top notch coach and he has come a long way.
