I never seen a RB make so many hard 3 yard runs after getting hit in the backfield over and over. Lynch is only 25, and I can’t imagine the Seahawks offense without him especially if we’re stuck with Jackson under center another year.

Westbrook didn’t get paid and disappear. He produced despite having bad knees and never practicing. He also ended up with 2 concussions in 1 season, so the Eagles got gunshy about keeping him around with the magnifying glass on people with chronic concussions. He still produced when given a chance in SF as well, but behind Gore he didn’t see much playing time.

What big contract did Gore get? Gore actually signed a 3 year extension potentially worth $21 million but realistically he’s only “guaranteed” $13.5 million and of that guaranteed money the 49ers don’t have to pay him $6.6 million if he’s released before the start of the 2013 season. Compared to contracts signed by other franchise backs this is really not a restrictive contract.

It’s dirty business, but it’s good business. There are a lot of ex-gms out there who paid their franchise running backs AFTER their production and neither party saw the end of the contract.

Shaun Alexander, Larry Johnson, Clinton Portis, Brian Westbrook, Edgerrin James, Jamal Lewis, Duece McCallister, Ahman Green…..they all got paid and disappeared.

It’s on page 1 of the NFL GM handbook. Never, ever EVER give a running back with a lot of carries a long term deal.
