Raiders deny that Bresnahan has been fired

Chuck Bresnahan, Chris Francis AP

The Raiders say that defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan remains employed by the team despite a radio report to the contrary.

Chris Townsend of 95.7 in San Francisco reported that Bresnahan has been fired, along with assistant coaches Greg Biekert, Rod Woodson and Kevin Ross.  (How can you fire Rod Woodson?)

CSNBayArea.com’s Paul Gutierrez got a comment about the report from Raiders spokesman John Herrera:

“That’s not accurate,” Herrera said.

We’ll have to wait and see if Bresnahan stays. Hue Jackson’s comments over the last few days, not to mention Oakland’s defensive statistics, seemed to indicate that Bresnahan may be on his way out.

Ah, the Raiders denying reports and staying secretive in coaching change season. Some traditions live on.

This Man should have been fired weeks ago, no reason to even have him on the plane, Bus whatever after that lions game!!!

  2. mrcosio says: Jan 3, 2012 9:26 PM

Why surprised with Woodson’s firing? its not like the corners were playing great

  3. justwinbaby29 says: Jan 3, 2012 9:27 PM

    Fire Herrera!

  4. db105 says: Jan 3, 2012 9:30 PM

How about firing the head coach that can’t manage a game very well?

  5. whynotusecommonsense says: Jan 3, 2012 9:31 PM

This Chris Jones character tried to start some other rumor too and beat writer Steve Corkran basically said the guy is never around the team and take him with a grain of salt.

Now, Bresnahan should be fired and it should have happened weeks ago so that’s not a great stretch. But Woodson, Biekert… Not buying that one yet. A new DC might bring in his own guys but I’ll wait for the official report for that one.

Firing chuck is OK but they got rid of Woodson, Biekert, and Ross? I know the secondary and LBs sucked but damn… let’s fire the coaches and not the players for missing gaps, nt bein in pos, taking bad angles, etc… I can see it now… Raiders next pc, Hue Jackson will be the HC,OC, DC, and GM.

It doesnt matter if your DC was Tom Landry or Bill Parcells, the talent on the defensive side of the ball would have trouble competing in Canada.

Maybe Hue is slightly confused, and thinks he is coaching Red and Gold.

    Will cut down on penalties

All things promised by Hue, and delivered by the team across the bay.

The comment was “That’s not accurate,” meaning not everyone mentioned was fired. Trust me Bresnahan is GONE! He has to be. Listen to Hues radio report posted on the Raiders website. He is meeting with all coaches and assistants through tonight (West Coast remember) in the interview you can hear that the hammer is coming. Bye Chuck, you wont be missed….AT ALL!

  19. slightlyhyphy says: Jan 3, 2012 9:51 PM

And OF COURSE, there is the obligatory shot at the Raiders organization! EVERY team in the NFL will deny a hiring/firing until it is made official out of respect. That’s pretty well known. Yet even though a common practice among NFL teams, it is only the Raiders who are called out on it, being deemed secretive, covert, conniving, and two faced!

The bad news is that Hue Jackson is getting a new boss who’ll give him a season to win their division without benefit of any draft picks in round 1-4.

The good news is that they’re in a division with offensively challenged Denver, inept KC, and Norv’s “mission impossible ” team which will self destruct in 5…4…3…2..

    *******

That’s not a denial. Bresnahan’s been fired, make book on it.

Herrera is a weasel, a punk and always has been. If you’ve seen that video of him physically threatening Tim Kawakami over a piece that he wrote that ultimately *was* accurate and truthful the moment it was published, then you know what I’m talking about.

You’ll see. Bresnahan has been fired but one of those named assistants was allowed to quit and technically wasn’t fired, thus making the report ‘(inaccurate)’.

    ————————————————

Just because you’re a Hall Of Fame player does not mean you are a great coach. I used to like Rod Woodson a lot, but that changed the year he decided to become an assistant coach for his kid’s youth football league in Dublin, CA.

One game in particular that stands out to me that sumed up his stint as a youth coach, is the playoff game he was in. In the middle of the game he left the field and literally hopped over into the stand and started screaming and yelling at a woman. Saying he would knock her out in front of everyone there. It took a fellow coach jumping into the stands to get him back onto the field. His whole sideline was so shocked at what transpired that they lost all focus on the game and ended up losing. It was sad that the officials who saw the whole incident decided to let him back on the sideline. The woman ended up being one of his children’s mother.

As a coach who spends countless hours coaching children, I lost respect for the guy that day. Perhaps he had a bad day? Still doesn’t make up for what happened in front of young players (12-14 year olds.) I doubt many people here will take this story as true. I just know what I’ve seen out of him that whole season.

As I stated above, just because you’re a Hall Of Famer, does not make you a Hall Of Fame coach.

It’s not like they have great corners to play! Actually, Bresnahan needs to go. That defense is awful.

  38. Matt says: Jan 3, 2012 10:36 PM

Not sure we’d cut Woodson and Biekert. They’re first-year coaches. Also Rod Woodson isn’t just a Raider. He’s got 2000 Ravens ties that makes him a Hue guy.

The three scenarios I see unfolding are:

    1) We try to interview Dennis Thurman again, snag him because Rex is angry at his defense, and switch to a 3-4 scheme while probably cutting Waufle [damnit] and keeping Chuck and Biekert.

    2) We either get Dennis Thurman and dump the whole rest of the defensive staff, or we don’t get Dennis Thurman and some other 3-4 DC wants us to dump the whole rest of the defensive staff.

    3) We bring Steve Spags in, play a blitzing 4-3 scheme, and keep all of our defensive staff. Our DL coach Greg Waufle worked wonders with Spags when they were with the Giants.

    —————————————-

We have some pieces for a 3-4 scheme, but no nose tackle which makes us very susceptible to the run just as we were this year. Seymour, Kelly, Houston, Shaughnessy, and Moss are all defensive ends in a 3-4 scheme. John Henderson is too old to make the leap from 4-3 role player to 3-4 everydown nose tackle.

Every other piece is pretty much there. Play McClain and Curry at MLB, Goethel/Groves at WLB, Wimbley on the other edge as a D-Ware type, and then your back four. Apparently we’re playing Huff at corner next year. ugh. ugh. That’s gonna be…interesting.

How can all raider nation see it that we need a real GM a real d coordinator and a real media spokesperson but the damn organization who let us all down again wants to beat around the bush and always hide crap. Like Mcfaddens injury. And just not being up front we all know he’s gonna get fired. Lets get mike singletary or jack del Rio and a real GM. Like the newly fired colts GM duo. Or colangelo or Sherman. We need a real front office. And for all u haters hating on C. Palmer and hue get a life. Palmer is top five qb and hue got let down by al Davis s hires hires. Al Davis is still somehow hurting us.

If Rod Woodson and Greg Biekert are getting fired by Hue Jackson, Hue will lose my confidence in him!!!!

Sorry, but the linebacker position in the NFL is being played poorer than ever because too many ball clubs care about their linebackers becoming hip-fluid athletes dropping into pass coverage because there a pass catchers in the open field!!!

Why not give less breathing room for the quarterback so he can throw less and give more chippy hits to quarterbacks and pass catchers so the routes of the offense are disturbed!!! It seems like defensive coordinators would rather make big plays rather (I say this benevolently) than inflict pain on offensive players!!!

Linebackers want to HIT people!!! Make schemes that designate them to inflict painful hits!!!

So true grimmlock I was in such disbelief when they wouldn’t retain the guy he was the best CB in 2011 a true shut down CB.

This is one of the worse Raiders defenses I have seen in a long time man and chuck was the weak ling back when gruden was in town as well.

We use to get owned by screen plays and the ones by the Patriots in the snow bowl. Then the D got run on by the likes of the Steelers Qb Kordell Stewart and Aaron Brooks when he was with the saints for come back wins. No difference then or now with Chuck B who let Shawn Alexander have a game setting record of 266 yards on a short week game in Seattle. I couldn’t Believe this guy was back. I am not saying Ryan was a amazing because LT use to own us as others like KC’s Priest Holmes.

When we had good D we had a 70 million dollar QB sitting on the bench eating big macs and what a good D do if the Offense can’t do their part. Just kinda appeared that when our D was ranked nicely the coaching staff and the offense were in shambles.

Raider Nation hold on lets give Hugh a chance if he doesn’t work out we will see soon enough but Remember what Gruden had to over come butting heads with Al and he cleaned house after 1998 after going 8-8 with Jeff George as qb and Harvey Williams as the RB.

Go Raiders for 2012 !!! IMO I see good things to come, but this 2011 season nearly gave me a heart attack due to all the last minute comebacks could of should of been in the post season.

  73. raydrzz says: Jan 5, 2012 2:38 AM

    It’s pretty damn simple………..

The players have to fit the system, not the other way around. If you have the talent to win football games and your not winning? It’s the coaching or the system or both. In this case it’s both. Switch to a 3-4 zone coverage scheme. It’s obvious that our personnel cannot play man. That ended when Nhamdi left. Stanford “Burnt Toast” Routt needs all the help he can get, play zone. He was holding other team’s top receivers like a damn straight jacket, not in a good way either.

To me this looks alot better to me if we are in a 3-4 in zone coverage……BUT ALL CONTINGENT UPON THE PLAYERS BEING ABLE TO PLAY IN THAT SYSTEM.
I think with a few key FA additions, Draft Picks, listed below, along with some solid coaching we would be better off.

    DE Seymour(Original Position in 3-4)/Bryant
    NT Kelly/Henderson
DE Houston (Played fr/so seasns as DE n College)
OLB A. Spencer *FA Acq via Dallas*
    ILB McClain
ILB Groves (Make a run @ Connor from Car)
    OLB Wimbley
CB Routt/DVD (As much as I hate it)
CB Johnson/Chekwa (As much as I hate it again)
FS Huff (Talk of him moving to Corner) but Giardono is trash so may stay at FS.
SS Have to find a way to keep Branch
Anyone other than Mitchell is good. Dude Sux! horrible!

    Draft:
    129th (Compensatory)
    152nd (5th)
    192nd (6th)

If we lose Branch the it has to be addressed in F/A and not too many big names at SS are out there aside from him. I’d like to see us draft or improve the entire right side. The left side was solid for the most part.
