To all you you who think he has the arm strength and the dude who posted a YouTube video this is the NFL not college buddy. All those throws look better because of slower and less talented completion. And by the way I am a bears fan not packers. You just all want him to succeed do bad you can’t see how terrible he really is.
.........
What has Ponder shown you for you to call the guy "terrible?" Seriously? How did/do you feel about that INT machine running the Bears offense? Before this year, all the guy did was throw INTs. I don't understand your point.....Ponder has played half a season.....13tds-13ints.....sounds about average or even a little better than average for a rookie.

The thing is, Fans now days all have the answers. Like, Payton is a bust, Brees can never be a superbowl contender. Or my personal favorate, Eli will never get a supperbowl like Payton. Yet with the right team these QB's thrived. Qbs out of college have to be groomed and have confidents instilled in some way. Not every qb comes out and goes to the Superbowl right away. Critics are critics for a reason. No team will hire them because they have no forsight. They just sit in the back and complain. Talk in five years on what a bust he is. But until then, give him a chance.

I'm by no means making fun of the vikes. Yeah, there was sarcasm involved, but I'm just speaking the truth, ponder sucks. Lions fans, Bengals fans, raiders fans, arena football fans can all agree on ponder. My favorite team has nothing to do with my assessment of ponder. I've been a lions fan all my life, so I feel for bikes fans right now. If I were a vikes fan I would be irrate with this news, kinda like i was when the lions named kitna their starter.

Fanof28-webb is better all around. And us lions fans know a bad qb when we see one, as we had been cursed with them before Stafford. And I hate to break it to you, but since I first saw ponder at fsu, I thought he was Joey Harrington, after I saw him in Detroit, I realized Joey Harrington was better. Granted ponder is young and has room to grow, but I'd rather take the Guy who can run from the unblocked defenders that the porous line allowed by, than Joey Harrington

Dear Mr spielman,
Ponder as your #1 qb is awesome!!!
-sincerely, the rest of the NFC North
Ps- We prefer that you ship Joe Webb to the AFC, as he is your best option at qb
---------------------------------------------------------
This is funny. A Lions fan making fun of the Vikings. Have you forgotten about your teams history? I'm a Packers fan, so I'm completely neutral in this in my disdain for the Lions and Vikings, but I'd much rather be a fan of a team that makes a trip to the playoffs more than ONCE EVERY 13 YEARS! Vikings have 1 top 10 pick (besides the one they got for trading Moss to the Raiders) in as long as I can remember. Lions have one every year this decade besides the one in the coming draft.

I hope they draft Russell Wilson in the 3rd or 4th rd. He’s going to be a steal for them if they can get him in the middle or later rounds of the draft.
---------------------------------------------------------
why would they draft wilson while they already have Ponder and Webb? They need to focus all their attention in coaching up the two of them. No use wasting the QB coach's time with another project.

I'm a badgers fan and I think he's the best QB the Badgers have had in a LONG time, but he's just too short to be a quality NFL QB.

lmoneyfresh says:

Not sure where all you idiots are getting this “Webb is better” business from. Did you see his week 17 performance? Atrocious. He’s one of those guys that can come in and make a few plays, but when it comes to playing an extended amount of times, defenses figure him out ala tebow.

Webb is an athlete who can throw, Ponder is a QB who can run…big difference.

--------------------------------------------

Are you kidding? I watched the final three games of the Vikings season, and Joe Webb outperformed Ponder in those games.

In each game, Webb came off the bench. Against Detroit, the Vikings were down 34-14, and Webb was one missed facemask penalty away from leading a comeback, on the road, against a playoff team. The next week at Washington, Webb led the team to a come from behind victory, throwing 2 TD passes. Against Chicago, he was running for his life all day, after the same defense knocked out a less than impressive Ponder (4-12 with a pick six). Webb make some spectacular plays under pressure, and made one bad throw at the end.

Ponder may turn out to be a better QB than Webb, and there's no doubt that the Viking brass hope so. However, Webb absolutely outplayed Ponder during the final three games this season, and I don't see the point in denying that reality, even if it makes Rick Spielman uncomfortable.

Vikes need so many things now, it'd be hard to put a finger on one. I think Ponder can be the real deal though...he's smart, which is the first rung on the ladder you need at QB. O-line is in rough shape and getting up in age a bit. Defensive backfield is horrendous, and how Winfield is pulling in Jared Allen and almost Peterson type money is beyond me....almost 8 mil a year this year...ouch. Griffin was yanking in just short of 4 million. RB and LB spots and depth need to be shored up too. Got alot of money in AP, and if he has a setback, which wouldn't be a surprise whatsoever, someone else that wasn't in camp this year needs to be there.

I'd bet MN gets another 1 or 2 wins at least in the W column if there's a stud receiver opposite Harvin this past year, too. How someone else on the D line didn't get anything done with all of the attention Allen gets should be sickening to you Vike fans...especially the money Williams makes.

You play that #3 card off to the highest bidder and get extra picks and extra talent...ala Ted Thompson. One thing I will credit Spielman with is that he's not going to allow a QB controversy all off-season to brew, and that's a smart thing.

Ponder can have a great WR corp and a great OL, but if your DEF is a sieve, no way is he winning a passing shootout with any of his conference counterparts....not at this stage of his career, anyway.

Vikes need so many things now, it’d be hard to put a finger on one. I think Ponder can be the real deal though…he’s smart, which is the first rung on the ladder you need at QB. O-line is in rough shape and getting up in age a bit. Defensive backfield is horrendous, and how Winfield is pulling in Jared Allen and almost Peterson type money is beyond me….almost 8 mil a year this year…ouch. Griffin was yanking in just short of 4 million. RB and LB spots and depth need to be shored up too. Got alot of money in AP, and if he has a setback, which wouldn’t be a surprise whatsoever, someone else that wasn’t in camp this year needs to be there.

I’d bet MN gets another 1 or 2 wins at least in the W column if there’s a stud receiver opposite Harvin this past year, too. How someone else on the D line didn’t get anything done with all of the attention Allen gets should be sickening to you Vike fans…especially the money Williams makes.

Spielman doesn't have a clue when it comes to QBs. He traded a second rounder to get AJ Feeley. He wastes a 12th over all on a mediocrity named Ponder. If it was up to him the Vikings would have been playing Rosenfels in 2009 and would never have pursued Favre.

Ponder is not accurate enough to play the position. He also showed zero progress during the year. He actually got progressively worse.

I'm not sure how anyone watching Ponder play this year would see him as a QB. He throws 5 balls a game to the wrong team (they catch 2-3) - he has no pocket awareness. He made the same mistakes repeatedly. Sure he runs well, but he also showed a lack of ability to stay healthy - so you know the running has to stop. The guy is a nothing. The guy he actually reminds me of is Rex Grossman...he looks good for a few plays and then he makes a WTF throw 5 times a game.

As for Webb - he isn't accurate enough either. But he sure as hell out performed Ponder - and he did so with next to no reps with the first team.

Neither is the answer...the fact that Speilman thinks Ponder is tells you all you need to know about that dimwit.

It truly amazes me that these career underachievers like Speilman continue to get jobs when they demonstrate no ability to do the job at even an average level. Norv Turner is another example. These types get a reputation as good football people and the evidence otherwise is ignored.

I'm thinking of dumping the Vikings in protest for their continued stupidity. I'm open to offers from more intelligently managed teams. NE comes to mind.

While Flynn had his most notable game, last weekend, he did help the Packers push the Patriots to the limit, last year after Rodgers concussion.

He also helped lead him team win a BCS Championship in college. Give the guy some credit. He has done well when Rodgers was pulled in garbage time as well. I would say that he is better than most NFC West QBs, and some others in the league.

Hopefully they can trade their #3 for both the Browns 1st rd picks and take Claiborne and Janoris Jenkins or Alfonso Dennard or an OT since they're Oline is horrible and they're secondary has been horrible for so long. If they're lucky they could also draft Levonte David in the 2nd because both Hendersons are FA's. They can always sign a WR to help out I hope they draft Russell Wilson in the 3rd or 4th rd. He's going to be a steal for them if they can get him in the middle or later rounds of the draft.

I agree with fargovikesfan. Get linemen. You can always get very good quality linemen after the first round. Besides, the have lost one of their best linemen in Jim Kleinsasser, who just retired. That is where the emphasis should be.

The Washington scenario intrigues me. I like it. Trade for their first and a few other picks after the first round. Stock up on linemen. Ponder got killed this year and Joe Webb was running for his life in that last game.

Also, keep Joe Webb. He can make a lot of throws. The problem, as Darryl Johnston pointed out, was that he needs to learn more of the playbook. He noticed that the team kept running the same plays over and over. The guy hasn't been given the opportunity to learn everything. You can't blame the guy for stuff he has not practiced.

Frankly, I don't trust Spielman to do this right. The Polians are right out there. We should have waited a little longer to see if they were interested. Hire Chris as the GM, but make sure his dad is a consultant. Oh, well, I can dream can't I?

This is great news, I was worried they’d sign Matt Flynn and become a real threat in the NFC North, instead they’ll keep fighting to get out of fourth place in the division for a few more years.
........
Beacuse Matt Flynn is A PROVEN NFL QB now huh? Dude lights it up once and you think he is guaranteed to be a stud in the NFL? Scott Mitchell.......ever hear of him? Here, I have some Packer Stock to sell you that I printed off at home......interested?

No mystery about Ponder being the guy going forward and Web being used creatively. Ponder showed some skills and intellect but with that below average O-line and perhaps the poorest outside receivers in the league it wasn't likely that he would do much.

Trade the pick to Washington and use their pick for the OT from Iowa or the one from Stanford. Use the additional #2 pick for an upgrade at WR or Cornerback. Plenty of quality at those positions this year in the top 40 over all.

The WR corps is as bad as the OL. Vikes need a deep threat to complement Harvin. A WR that can stretch the field and get open helps the OL as much as Kalil would. You don’t waste the #3 pick in the draft on lineman you can pick in later rounds. Justin Blackmon is a unique talent. Pick him.
