Chuck Bresnahan is indeed on the way out

Rod Woodson, Stanford Routt AP

We passed along some typical Raiders weirdness the other night, noting that the team denied a radio report from 95.7′s Chris Townsend that defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan and three other Raiders assistants including Rod Woodson had been fired.

Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports reports that Bresnahan and the three others are indeed on the way out.

So why did the Raiders deny the report? Semantics.

Oakland informed the four coaches they would not be brought back next season, but they are requiring them to work the remaining two weeks of their contract. Silver calls team spokesman John Herrera a “lying liar” and a “tool.”

(We expect an epic Herrera response.)

“This is why a lot of established coaches don’t want to work for Raiders. They play games, instead of just manning up and firing people,” Silver writes. “They say, ‘Oh, you have a year on your contract? You’ve been reassigned to scouting.’ Daring them to leave or void contract.”

Al Davis is surely looking on from above with a toothy grin.

Wasn’t Woodson just hired this year? This sounds like one of those pathetic “you’re fired and we invite you to interview for your old job” things.

  2. trbowman says: Jan 5, 2012 3:05 PM

    Herrera is a small man.

  3. idriveamoped says: Jan 5, 2012 3:05 PM

After the terrible job he did in Cin. I was surprise that Bresh found a job, now that he is fired from Oak, I don’t think he has anywhere else to go.

Yes thank GOD, but damn waited to long!!!

  5. jedicurt says: Jan 5, 2012 3:06 PM

sounds to me like they were NOT fired as the initial report suggestion… just that since their contracts are up at the end of this year, they will not be signed to a new contract, and are therefor finishing out the final days of their current contract.

so they were honest when the denied the report that the coaches were fired… they will just not be re-signed….

when i player become a free agent at the end of his contract, we don’t say that he was waived by the team… so why refer to someone being fired when they are not… they will just no longer be under contract

Finally some good news. Better news would be they firing everyone, including the “owner”. Mark Davis has been completely silent since his father’s passing and needs to come out say exactly what’s planned for this franchise. The Raiders need a plan and so I see nothing for this teams future. Leadership is needed now!!!!

  24. conjecture101 says: Jan 5, 2012 3:38 PM

This is why no credible sports fan or player pays attention to yahoo sports or Michael Silver. They are the laughing stock of the sports entertainment industry. Silver wishes he was wearing the Silver & Black, but sucked at little league football and failed his sports management classes so decided he would become a “tool” and “liar” because those are the prerequisites for being a yahoo sports “reporter”

  25. blackbeardk says: Jan 5, 2012 3:38 PM

Suppose they want to bring in a defensive coordinator who might want to offer these coaches a position on his staff…If the Raiders release them they are free to go where they please and don’t have to interview with the Raiders new defensive coordinator…if under contract…they at least would have to talk to him…

  26. a1skee says: Jan 5, 2012 3:38 PM

John Hererra needs to go too. Amy Trask has been trying to clean the negativity up in Oakland but every time these other personnel people open their mouth its like AL didnt die. Hue can talk too much, John talks too much, hell even Bresnahan spoke too much. When the new GM comes in, Hue should only speak on games and not personnel issues. The new GM better lay down new law there with Mark Davis and Amy Trask. Media hates Oakland cause the Kawakami, Silver AND Schefter incidents. Hell even Lombardi. Maybe if Raiders were winning they can get away with these things but its been 10 years now!!!!

What is it with you media types just not getting it? Do I really need to define for you the word fired? As if Silver would have a clue about anything let alone a baseless assumption of coaches not wanting to work for the Raiders. Back up your words big man, name one “established coach” who has turned down a Raiders job. You media talking heads love to bash the Raiders, you should be kissing their boots

  31. godofwine330 says: Jan 5, 2012 3:48 PM

  35. wetpaperbag3 says: Jan 5, 2012 3:56 PM

It’s sad that Michael Silver didn’t do his homework in regards to the coaches not being fired immediately vs allowing them to finish their contracts and being allowed to continue receiving a paycheck.

Al Davis had ALWAYS had the highest respect for his assistant coaches (Head Coaches…well, that’s another matter LOL).

Assistant coaches make how much money? Plus they have families and bills to pay. The league as a whole have not taken care of the assistant coaches for decades; despite logging more hours than the head coaches/coordinators, the support staff, and most certainly the players. And yet, when a multi-million dollar head coach gets fired, all his assistants get the axe and all money stops rolling in, whereas a head coach or coordinator gets BOUGHT OUT of his contract.

Assistant coaches are often always over-worked and underpaid. Al Davis, over the tenure with the Raiders, ensured that his assistants received ALL OF THEIR MONEY OWED. That is why they remained on the team even after a failed season or if a head coach or coordinator firing was imminent. Davis was once an assistant coach and understood the sacrifices they make in both time away from family and the modest amount of money they make.

  36. rando74 says: Jan 5, 2012 4:05 PM

Silver calls team spokesman John Herrera a “lying liar” and a “tool.”

LOL, lying liar. Is there another kind. P.S. how cheap do you have to be to force these guys to work two more weeks? Doing what??? Pushing papers around and helping pack up the items that need to go into storage? Poor Woodson.

  38. nineroutsider says: Jan 5, 2012 4:07 PM

Tim Kawakami is a know raider hater so John Herrera trying to pick a fight with him is the main reason I like John. Kawakami much like Silver is a narcissistic fool who believes people who actually do something for a living owe them every specificity of their organizational actions.

“Chris Townsend of 95.7 in San Francisco reported that Bresnahan has been fired, along with assistant coaches Greg Biekert, Rod Woodson and Kevin Ross. (How can you fire Rod Woodson?)”

Can’t help but notice who wasn’t on this list: Mike Waufle. HueJack wanted his man last year (Chuck Pagano), but likely won’t get a 2nd bite at the apple. However, maybe Spags is in play, being that Waufle was his d-line coach with the G-Men during their Super Bowl upset of Brady/Belichick. Still, Spags entire career has been on the east side of the Mississippi.

This defense needs to cut down on the ridiculous number of penalties. The Raiders offense was good enough to overcome their own penalties, but Seymour and company kept putting this team behind the eight ball, time and time again.

Not only did they ignore the quotation marks, suggesting that Gregg was quoting somebody else … he misses the fact that Gregg names who he was quoting. And I’d believe Michael Silver over that d-bag Herrera anyday. God you Raider fans are hapless and helpless.

Herrera could only be employed by the raiders. No other team would hire this lying idiot. 8-8 again raiders…10 years and counting since you’ve seen the playoffs in one of the weakest divisions in the NFL history. And next year, it’ll be the same, if not worse.

  51. humboldt420 says: Jan 5, 2012 5:07 PM

    @myopinionisrighterthanyours

Have you followed coaching transactions in Oakland as of late?

Contracts may be guaranteed for coaches, however, not when it comes to Al Davis and the Raiders.

When Oakland fires a coach, that said coach rarely sees the rest of the money due to him, ala Lane Kiffin. Kiff sued for the rest of the money and lost.

Davis may not have fielded a winning team, but he knew how to win in court.

So, with that said, the Raiders may be letting Chuck B and the assistant defensive coaches collect their final check the next two weeks.

  52. humboldt420 says: Jan 5, 2012 5:16 PM

    @ lanjoith

Tom Cable had the 11th ranked defense and went 8-8.

Hue Jackson had the 29th ranked defense and went 8-8.

Wonder what the Raiders record would have been under Jackson if they had a defense…

    =================================

ASSISTANT coaches do not have GUARANTEED contracts. If they are fired, they are fired with cause. That’s the s.o.p. in the NFL. The only ones with guaranteed contracts are the head coaches and MAYBE the coordinators. Even then, teams can find cause to not pay money if the contract was violated by the coach.

I mean, the NFL is known as a “What have you done for me lately” league and will replace virtually anyone with “the new guy” in a heartbeat! Isn’t it actually cool that a franchise will at least look out for the “little guys” who get very little recognition (until things go badly)?

I see keeping an assistant coach on the payroll a couple more weeks when there is nothing to do for those couple of weeks as sign of respect and I wish ALL the teams did this.

  56. torturedraiderfan says: Jan 5, 2012 5:23 PM

Herrera is a huge a-hole. Al used him to lie to the media. The world would be a better place if we never hear from Herrera again. You gotta wonder if the Raider organization will clean out the a-holes that Al used to keep around to do his dirty work.

  57. raiders757 says: Jan 5, 2012 5:31 PM

    ———————

This is laughable considering it’s speculating how things were in the past. Al Davis has passed, and the front office is in transition. Things are going to be different, and Herrera was only responding to the report that the firings already happened. Obviously that hadn’t occurred at the time, and he responded accordingly. It’s not his job to tell the media what will happen, even if the speculation is correct.

You guys, and Mike Silver, are making a mountain out of a mole hill.

  58. bloggingpoodlewalker says: Jan 5, 2012 5:32 PM

conjecture101, John Herrara lacks serious professionalism for trying to physically attack Tim Kawakami. You also need to understand that it is NOT a reporter’s job to serve as a public relations mouthpiece for your favorite team. They are supposed to report news as it happens. Kawakami, Jason Silver and other “Raider haters”, as you would label them, do that. The truth hurts sometimes. Instead of enabling Herrara’s actions and lack of professionalism, perhaps you should hold him and the rest of the organziation accountable for their decisions – whether it’s good or bad.

It really does not take a Genius to know that the D Coordinator will be Fired, does it? The Yahoo is really putting himself out on a Limb on that one. lol The others who knows but as to the poor treatment claimed being doled out at Woodson or other X Raider Player Coaches, I doubt it very much. You dont want to mess with us, Also the only reason why these Hack Writers don’t like the Raiders is because the Raiders have no RATS inside the building like other teams. These writers are always guessing.
Everybody already knew Chuckie was fired, After the loss on the last game he adressed the team thanking them for letting them be coached by himself..

Give me a break dude, my well being as a raider fan doesn’t rest in the trusty detective work of Tim Kawakami, Id be a fan whether he was reporting or cleaning toilets as he should be.

Kawakami isn’t interested in reporting news, he’s interested in spewing his narcissistic opinions which have no merit, and getting paid for it. Same with Silver, these guys don’t have the credentials to speak on how one should or should not run a football organization.

My point is that the Raiders don’t owe these clowns anything. Alot of these reporters think their entitled to know everything that goes on in the organization. They’re NOT. And if you bash our players and employees through the media what makes you think were gonna be polite to you? All these guys write id op-ed columns and the “op” part is completely irrelevant to us.

I’d say Kiffin got fired. Shanahan got fired. When Sean Peyton interviewed he said he had reservations about working for Davis, but was still considering taking the job. Parcells told him he wasn’t ready. I think Mike Silver picked the Raiders to go to the Super Bowl this season. John Herrera is a douche. Mike Silver is a douche. But that’s all beside the point. The point is, Bresnahan is gone.

  74. ashman23 says: Jan 6, 2012 2:48 AM

Forget the story for two seconds. I have a question for followers of other teams that live to comment on Raiders stories.

I have never felt compelled to comment on another team’s story but there’s some here that constantly feel they have to laugh and make snide remarks regarding the Raiders, why?

We as fans know they have sucked and have got things wrong for a long time, so what, we get it.

Do you feel the urge because they have hurt you over the history you’ve followed the NFL? Do you envy them in some way? Do you have nothing better to do?

The NFL is what it is today because of ‘storied franchises’ like the Raiders, Steelers, Patriots, Packers etc. Just because we’ve got it wrong recently doesn’t mean the Raiders deserve ridicule on a constant basis.

  75. joetoronto says: Jan 6, 2012 6:19 AM

This is unbelievable, even for PFT.

There’s a new GM starting soon and the contracts for the assistant coaches are coming up, what is the team supposed to do, sign them to new contracts?

The new GM hires a HC, who hires his assistants.

Is this too hard to understand, I mean, I know it is for those powder blue sissy’s, but the rest of you should get it.
