Smith, Jones named rookies of the month

Taken in consecutive picks at the top of the 2011 draft, Falcons receiver Julio Jones and 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith now have something else in common — besides having the most common last names.

They’re the NFL rookies of the month for December/January.

Jones, the sixth pick in the draft, caught 24 passes for 461 yards and six touchdowns in five games.  Along the way, the Falcons made their way back to the postseason.  Smith added 6.5 sacks, giving him 14 for the season — 0.5 sacks short of the all-time rookie record.

They could have one more thing in common.  If the Falcons beat the Giants and the Lions beat the Saints this weekend, the rookies of the month will get together on the field in San Francisco on Saturday, January 14.

Seems like every highlight this season, for every player and every team (whether in pictures or video,) has been against the Bucs…

Aldon Smith is definitely a beast…..and just has pure RAW talent…..should be fun to watch him as actually figures out how to get to the QB even more over the next few years!

I love the headline. “Smith” or “Jones” like off the top of our heads we know who the story is about. Imagine if some news headline in China is “Lee does this” or in Mexico, “Perez does that.”

I see your point but will have to disagree. The headline also mentions “rookie of the month” and that narrows it down quite a bit. There haven’t been many other impactful rookies out their with those last names – and both have been lighting it up the whole year. Call it bias, but when i hear “rookie” and “smith” i know it’s Aldon.

think about this: “Johnson leads recievers in Pro-Bowl voting”. You know it’s Calvin.

Once Aldon Smith becomes an every-down player, it’s going to be frightening. This kid reminds me a bit of Charles Haley.
