Tebow time may almost be up

Kansas City Chiefs v Denver Broncos Getty Images

It’s been a wild ride, but Tebow time may almost be over for the season.

I can’t remember a player ever inspiring more irrational analysis — good and bad — in the span of only two months. Tebow and the Broncos face their toughest test yet in the playoffs.

For a column on NBCSports.com, I look at why the Steelers present such a difficult matchup and how Tebow got this far. The Broncos say they will have to pass to win against Pittsburgh, but that’s not the best idea against the top pass defense in the league by far.

The Broncos didn’t get this far by sustaining offense. They got here with defense, turnovers, the No. 1 rushing game in the league, and waiting for fourth quarter for magic to happen.

That’s their best recipe for success on Sunday.

This guy is one stupid Marion Barber play from being considered a bust. Assuming they lose to Pittsburgh, that would make him a very mediocre 6-6 as a starter with horrible statistics.

If any other QB had put up Tebow’s numbers and was 6-6 as a starter, would anyone be projecting him as a starting QB in 2012-13?

    Anyone?

I’m not taking anything for granted, it is the playoffs and every team that makes the playoffs in my opinion is there for a reason. Steelers have been putting up abysmal points in the last few weeks and with all of the injuries this very well COULD be a trap game (although maybe not the best word to use for a playoff game).

Bottom line is I bet no Steelers are taking Tebow lightly or considering this win a gimme. We do know that this guy loves a challenge and has risen to meet those challenges in the past. This is probably the biggest challenge of his pro career thus far.

    Go Steelers

  17. commandercornpone says: Jan 6, 2012 1:23 PM

actually he is 8-6 as a starter. problem is, some of the 6 looked pretty bad. then again, denver isnt really a good team.

but lots of guys have 6-6 type records and still start, or did. look at the standings. look at history.

the steelers are overpriced at 9 points.

i can see the chattering class clamoring for boytoy brady quinn. quinn was the qb the last time the browns beat the steelers. he went 6 for 19, essentially playing tebow ball. tebow could probly do that also. with rush yards thrown in. obviously the browns defense played over its head.

lets get this straight, i am not a tebow fan per se. i have bet against him mostly. and usually got burned. but it looks to me that the chattering class brings out its own irrationality. it is obvious sports journalistos are liberal. and they dont believe what tebow believes and dont like how he expresses it.

and that’s why they want him to fail, get benched and disappear. it has nothing to do with his play per se. it’s like he doesnt share the sports reporters’ religion. therefore he must be excommunicated from what the journalistos consider THEIR sport.

  34. Deb says: Jan 6, 2012 1:58 PM

The Broncos are saying they have to pass to win. But unless Fox and Elway are engineering their own destruction, they’re game-planning to do just what you noted: play solid defense, force turnovers, run, and pray for some fourth-quarter magic. And given the Steelers’ current weaknesses, that’s not outside the realm of possibility.

Pouncey’s out, Kemo’s back in at guard, and Ben’s immobile. The backups are running the ball. It’s absolutely possible the Broncos can force turnovers. Champ is just as capable of jumping in front of Ben’s passes as the 49ers DBs. We’re number 1 against the pass, but a little less imposing against the run. And it will be just as difficult for our run defense to game-plan for Tebow as it is for our opponents to game-plan for a healthy Roethlisberger once he gets out of the pocket. As for fourth-quarter magic … well, if Ben turns over the ball–as he’s done in several games this year–and keeps the defense on the field too long, they’ll be as worn out by the fourth quarter as they were in San Francisco. And then there’s that thin air …

I wouldn’t write off the Broncos just yet. We should have sat Ben and Pouncey right after they suffered their ankle injuries and let Woodley continue healing until he was 100 percent. Bad decisions often have negative consequences. I hope ours don’t come back to haunt us Sunday.

IMO the ‘Hate Tebow’ thing started when he and his mom did the commercial during the Super Bowl a few years ago. The commercial started with his mom describing about 20 years prior when she was on a mission for her church and was pregnant. She got sick and a lot of people advised her to get an abortion. She decided not to get an abortion and the living breathing human being she was carrying when she made this decision grew up to be Tim Tebow.

Then Tebow comes up to her and hugs her and says “Thanks mom.”

    That’s it.

(Predictably) abortion rights people went ballistic.

If you were to say he does not have the talent to succeed as a starting quarterback, you may have some reasonable statistics to back it up, but to say he does not have the talent to succeed in the pros is rediculous. Win or lose, Tebow will be back and for a full season next year! It’s already been decided. So keep your straight-jackets handy or just give-in and feel the love!!! You can’t stop Tebow, you can only hope to contain him… until the 4th quarter!!!

Also to all the idiots whining about Marion Barber…What – ifs are for losers and Raiders fans. The Bears had another chance to pick up the first down and they had two chances to stop Tebow from driving into field goal range and they couldn’t do it. Without Marion Barber and a blatant block in the back on a Hester return, the Bears wouldn’t have even been in that game. But the important facts are that the denver defense made a great play and Tebow put together game-winning drives. Part of being a winner is taking advantage of the other teams mistakes!

Early in “Tebowmania” (As a Bronco fan) I saw Tebow:

    1) Get lucky
    2) Do well against a prevent defense
    3) Confuse teams with a gimmick offense
    4) Catch teams napping who thought they had a win late in the 4th quarter

    then:

Essentially get destroyed by Chicago, New England, Buffalo, KC and look completely out of place in the league.

The league figured his running out and defenses created a pocket for him to throw from and since then he has been…without argument…the worst passing QB to ever play in the NFL.

People are automatically assuming the Steelers to win this game, and frankly they should. But all the hype this game is creating a false identity for this game.

Honestly, neither one of these teams are going to super bowl playing the way that have been lately. If either one of them gets hot they could make easily make noise but don’t be fooled if the Broncos run effectively against Pittsburgh, their run D is not its usual stout self so it could make for a very interesting game.

The fact is that this is all marketing, they are advertising two of the bigger name qb’s in the league (though for different reasons) for ratings.

it was up when he got beat down by the bills. there is no surer sign that there is no god than losing to the bills. the question is, without football what does tebow do to ward off his repressed demon like love of men? the offseason is just a countdown until tebow is caught with a slaveboy like some republican senator.

BTW – did you know that Chargers QB Philip Rivers is a practicing Catholic and has 6 kids and he goes to Mass EVERY WEEK?

You would never know since he’s not shoving his beliefs down everyone’s throat! I get Tebow’s faith is important, but I don’t need to hear it in every interview, press conference, etc.

Rush Limbaugh hit it right on the head: “The reason Tebow makes people uncomfortable is because he shows you your shortcomings……Tebow’s dull, Tebow’s boring, plus he’s a Christian, he actually believes and they just don’t want someone like that doing well.”

He doesn’t “shove his beliefs down everyone’s throats” — unlike his many shallow detractors do. He answers the media’s inquiries politely and truthfully and no matter how hard they try to trip him up, they fail. Tebow’s interview with Shannon Sharpe was priceless – made that blowhard Sharpe look foolish.
How is what Tebow does/says differ from all the athelets who point to the sky after every freaking score, get in those post game prayer circles or thank “their Lord and Savior” during TV interviews, then point to their own names on their jerseys after every good play?

Honestly, neither one of these teams are going to super bowl playing the way that have been lately.

Maybe, but it’s 12-4 versus 8-8, a +98 to -81 point differential, a winning road record versus a losing home record, and a 4-1 record in the last 5 games vs. 2-3.

Numbers never tell the whole story, but they tell a pretty darn good one here.

Awfully quiet around here since most of the Tebowmaniacs stopped commenting

Just lurking mainly, watching ya’ll make fools of yourselves.

Same crowd that said he wouldn’t get drafted high, wouldn’t ever be a starter, blah blah blah.

Now we’re here discussing his playoff game.

Here’s hoping my Steelers pull it out.

    That’s what she said.”

Ben Rothlisberger does that. It’s his “safe sex” method.

In all seriousness, Teblow isn’t fit to clean Elway’s jock strap. Career backup at best.

It happens to all rookie QBs

Teams have limited film and a guy like Tebow can take advantage of their lack of preparation

Eventually teams catch up with defensive schemes

Over time some rookies continue to improve and overcome those schemes, some don’t and never will

Tebow’s no more immune to that than any other QB

Time will tell if his assets outweigh his deficiencies.

If it were my team I’d prefer a QB who doesn’t have gaping deficiencies – but that’s just me.

    That’s it.

    __________________

What do you mean, “that’s it”? This is *everything*. Tebow put himself out there by placing himself in a commercial sponsored by a fringe religious group who besides pushing an obvious anti-choice agenda also pushes an agenda of intolerance, anti-gay, and religious bigotry.

    Yeah, real “religious”.

Make no mistake, the constant discussion of his religiosity is of his making, no one else’s. As Charles P. Pierce wrote in an article on the Grantland website:

“He put his business in the street that way, and he did so by allying himself with the softer side of a movement that contains other organizations that the Southern Poverty Law Center, which knows about this stuff, recently designated as hate groups.”

Google it. It’s a fantastic article.

If Tebow can somehow learn how to read a defense and throw in the off-season, then maybe he starts next year.

Tebow’s numbers are terrible and his wins were ALL ugly. Relying on miraculous end of the game heroics to win will catch up to anyone, and obviously already has with Tim.

The Broncos are in the playoffs because they have a strong defense and used to be able to run the ball….until defenses figured out how to stop Tebow on the ground….and also because the AFC west sucks this year.

I really can’t believe anyone thought he was going to make it with the way he has played. If an option QB could make it in today’s NFL, other teams would already be doing it.

Best offenses this year…Packers, Saints, Lions, New England….what do they all have in common? Beast pocket passers that can shred a defense.

Tebow will either be a career back up or transition to an H Back or tight end.

Sorry, you lost the argument right there when you quoted Rush Limbaugh. If you don’t think Tebow is shoving his religion down people’s throats then you’re not paying attention or are seeing it through rose colored tinted glasses. There are plenty of other religious players in the league but they didn’t make an anti choice commercial sponsored by a fringe and hateful religious group on the biggest stage in the country. They didn’t wear the eyeblack with scriptures. They’re not proselytizing and trying to convert people like Tebow. I am a Christian but don’t need religion shoved in my face every day by the likes of Tebow and politicians.

  87. easyeddie says: Jan 6, 2012 7:53 PM

Stop with the “anti-choice commercial” red herring. The ad didn’t even mention abortion and you know it, despite all the self-righteous hand wringing by the left. And what Tebow is doing is called free speech (leftists always crow about free expression, then go to attack mode when someone says something they don’t like, commits the mortal sin of wearing eyeblack with scriptures on it or stands up without apology for something they believe in. You are the one seemingly using religion to make a political statement.
And tell me, was Christ “shoving religion in people’s faces” when he said “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…..teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
