Erik Walden fined $15,000 for hit on Matthew Stafford

NFC Championship Football AP

The NFL has fined Packers linebacker Erik Walden $15,000 for a hit on Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford on Sunday.

According to the NFL, Walden unnecessarily struck Stafford in the head and neck area. It’s the second $15,000 fine of the season that Walden has received for a hit on a quarterback; he was previously fined $15,000 for a hit on Jay Cutler.

Walden’s penalty was costly for the Packers: It came after teammate Vic So’oto sacked Stafford at Green Bay’s 28-yard line, and gave the Lions first-and-10 at the 14-yard line. Stafford threw a touchdown pass to Titus Young three plays later.

yeah, i remember that one. Matt played it up a little(he was going for an Emmy) but the guy clearly came in late. Like when Goz jumped on the pile early in the year..

I would be surprised if a first class organization like the Packers keep this guy after the season. They don’t keep players like him around, and that is why they are so successful..other teams could learn a lot from them. GO LIONS!!

That must mean that GB is dirty.

What hit on Matthew stafford? That defense didn’t get to the qb all day (or all year for that matter).

Stafford had it coming! What a little whiner.

Hitting a guy wearing a helmet in the head while playing football – $15,000

    Beating a woman – $0

Anyone think the NFL has things messed up maybe just a little?

Wait for it……….Waaaaiiiiit for it………….”His late hit was because the Lions are dirty players”. I’m sure this will be spun into this season long bologna.

Walden’s hit was not the Stafford Oscar-worthy performance. The 2 Packer PFs on Stafford hits came almost back to back so it is pretty easy to mix them up. Stafford sure hammed it up on a post-whistle light blow to the chest/neck/head area by Des Bishop but there is no doubt it was a PF under the rules. Even if the contact area was not off limits, it was pretty clear the whistle had blown.

Walden’s hit on Stafford came when Stafford was lying on the ground after being sacked by Vic So’oto on 3rd down. It was a ridiculous, dirty hit and he deserves to be fined. It was pretty costly to the Packers, too. The sack moved the Lions back into that grey area of FG range in the difficult winds last week. Instead, the automatic first down led to an eventual Lion TD.

Walden has played like garbage since he got arrested. The Packers haven’t announced it officially yet but they are sure looking like they are going to make a change with him.

Eric Walden on the cross. Really???

  14. vikescry1 says: Jan 7, 2012 8:57 AM

@dewalt no the play your thinking about was bishop, which stafford was trying for an emmy. walden was clearly late so’oto had stafford on the ground already. walden was piling on, probably out of frustration of his poor play as of late. this guy has went from a young player with promise to someone who should be in the unemployment line. time for him to go, a packers fan…

  15. vikescry1 says: Jan 7, 2012 9:00 AM

and as far as stafford going for an emmy, it wasn’t a big deal. if bishop doesn’t touch him then there’s nothing to act for. that was bichop’s fault as well.

Suh gets suspended for 2 games for stomping a 300 lb man’s arm. This clown gets nothing for stomping his 100 lb girlfriend.

That was only one of the dumb things Walden has done lately. That’s why he won’t be the starter going into the playoffs. He’s been a huge disappointment this year.

People talk like walden is some great player. There’s a reason why we picked him up so late in the season last year. It’s because he’s overrated and nobody else wanted him. He overachieved last year and now everyone acts like he’s a 1st round bust because he hasn’t done anything this year.

I can’t WAIT for the draft when we can draft a real outside linebacker opposite Matthews. No pressure whatsoever from our defense.

Why does the league receive the fine money ?

I think the player fouled should receive 1/2 the $ and retired players fund benefit too.

    Greedy League lining their pockets.

I would enjoy an NFL League meeting with Nahstompakin Suh in the room. Explain to Suh he has been fined $ 110 K…let the chips fall where they may !

  21. getsome636 says: Jan 7, 2012 9:47 AM

Who cares? Walden has sucked for most of the season. Just cut his ass so he can sign with the vikings. He gets zero pressure on the QB, he is terrible against the run and constantly loses contain.

The league collects the fines, and then they go to charities at the end of the year. No extra money for the league’s pockets.

its been said a few times now, but this fine wasnt for the play when stafford drew the penalty,he was already on the ground then waldo came flying in. these packers are dirty i tell ya.

  26. rellenmcdee says: Jan 7, 2012 11:42 AM

He should have been suspended for this one. Spearing a QB when he’s on the ground.
Any Lions player would have received a larger fine at least and likely a suspension.

  27. rellenmcdee says: Jan 7, 2012 11:42 AM

To the guy asking about the league taking the fines, it doesn’t the fines go entirely to charity.

    Bologna is the meat.
Baloney is what you meant, but I understand what you meant. But the Lions led the NFL with the most personal fouls called against them, plus a guy got ejected and suspended for stepping on a player while he was down.

The Lions are dirty (it’s a culture that needs to be toned down but not erased) and so are every other team in the league. Every team has a player or group of players that get under the skin of their opponent or playes up to the whistle…after a second or two delay.

Lions fans, like their coaching staff … never say too much when their players are stomping other guys …

BUT … pat the coach on the back after the game … or draw a flag for a flop … and OH MY!!!!

Enjoy your butt kicking by the Saints tonight, imposters …

Walden doesn’t understand why the league is talking fines. He hits his girlfriend way harder than he hit Stafford.

  31. stavreafavre says: Jan 7, 2012 4:16 PM

Almost certainly gone after this season. Even if he can do nothing else, So’Oto should be in there now on passing downs to rush. One of the very few guys on the Packer D who can at least occasionally pressure the QB.
