The Falcons got an unwelcome surprise Sunday morning.

Their best cornerback, Brent Grimes, will not be available to face the Giants. Grimes is Atlanta’s best cornerback (Sorry Dunta Robinson) and he was widely expected to return to the lineup this week after missing four of the previous five games.

Grimes said he could have played last week and only sat out practice as a “precaution.” The Falcons will have to stop Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks at less than full strength. Dominique Franks will start for Atlanta.

Also out for Atlanta: special teamer Kerry Meier and linebacker Stephen Nicholas.

The Giants don’t have any surprises on their list. They are as healthy as they have been in months.
